Phase: escalating

The tower's magic pulsed with anger, its ancient runes flaring like eyes awakened from long slumber. The air grew heavier still, thick with something that clawed at their senses—a hunger that had nothing to do with mere sustenance and everything to do with the consumption of will and essence. Jeane stepped forward, her crimson gaze locked onto Halie, wings twitching with barely contained fury. "Have you lost your fucking mind?" The words cut through the tension like a blade, sharp enough to make Merrin wince despite herself. Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine, not from the cold but from something deeper—the ancient magic in those stones was stirring now, its attention focused on them with predatory interest.

Merrin moved between them instinctively, her rogue's instincts screaming at her to diffuse the situation before it escalated into something far worse than mere argument. "Wait," she said, voice low and urgent. "We need to think this through." The last thing they needed was for their own internal squabbling to feed whatever hunger gnawed at them from beyond that gate.

Seraphine, however, felt only a profound sense of relief mixed with growing apprehension. The key was gone—gone—and with it the immediate temptation to unleash something ancient and terrible upon them all. But the tower's magic was awake now, its presence growing stronger by the moment. She could feel it tasting them, weighing their worth like a predator assessing prey.

Jeane's voice cut through her thoughts again, sharp and biting. "That key was our only guaranteed way in! And you just... tossed it?" The succubus's wings spread slightly, a subconscious gesture of aggression that made Merrin take an involuntary step back. Seraphine forced herself to focus, to analyze the situation with the cool logic she'd honed through years of study.

"This is not merely about the key anymore," she said, her voice barely above a whisper but carrying the weight of her elven wisdom nonetheless. "The ward... it's activating. I can feel it." The runes on the gate pulsed again in response to her words, their light growing more intense, more malevolent.

Merrin felt a chill that had nothing to do with the night air. She knew when something was wrong—knew it deep in her bones—and this feeling screamed at her to turn back, to flee while they still could. But the rogue in her argued otherwise. A challenge like this... a mystery buried for centuries... it called to something reckless and thrill-seeking that she'd never quite managed to tame.

Jeane's anger seemed to have shifted its focus from Halie to the tower itself now, her crimson eyes fixed on the pulsing runes with an expression that mixed fury and fascination. "Then we need to find another way in," she growled, more to herself than to them. "And whatever's inside... it's going to know we're here soon if it doesn't already."

The air around them seemed to thicken further, the very molecules vibrating with ancient power. Something moved in the shadows beyond the gate—a sound like rustling leaves but deeper, wronger. Merrin's hand instinctively went to her crossbow, fingers curling around the familiar grip. Seraphine began murmuring under her breath, weaving a simple ward spell that might offer them some protection against whatever magical corruption lingered here.

They stood there for a long moment, three women at the threshold of darkness and danger, each facing their own demons—literal or metaphorical—as the tower's ancient magic pulsed hungrily around them. The choice was theirs: turn back into the known dangers of the woods, or step forward into the unknown horrors within.
