Round 27 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika steps forward, challenging the creature to come and get her, the ground shudders beneath her feet. The scuttling sound grows louder, and a section of the wall behind Merrin bursts open, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seems to stretch down into the depths of the earth. The air around them thickens with ancient power, and the runes on the ancient gate pulse ominously in response. Suddenly, a loud, wet splat echoes through the chamber as something scuttles out of the darkness behind Merrin. A grotesque, arthropod-like creature emerges, its multiple eyes glowing with an otherworldly light as it charges towards the party. The Ancient Prison Guardian takes a step back, its gaze flicking between the party members, seemingly wary of this new threat.
I stare into that glowing eye, and it feels like cold fingers are wrapping around my soul. This thing... it's ancient beyond comprehension, and the way it fixates on Varrika makes my skin crawl with a sickening certainty of dark bloodlines and twisted destiny. The ward spirit's psychic tendrils are probing harder now, trying to force their way into my mind—hot needles digging deeper. "We can't just use her as bait," I snap, stepping forward between Varrika and the monstrosity. "There has to be another way. We need information first." My hand closes around the key in my pocket—I feel its weight like a promise or a threat. "I have something here... maybe it's meant to open more than just doors." The runes on the ancient gate pulse ominously, and I realize with a jolt that they're responding to me holding the key. This thing... it knows about this artifact too. "Wait," I say sharply, as Merrin starts backing away from the wall burst. "Whatever's down there... we can't just run blindly into more darkness." My gaze flickers between the emerging arthropod horror and the looming figure at the gate—two threats converging on us simultaneously is exactly how people get picked off one by one in these cursed places. We need to think, not panic. I raise my silver holy symbol, even though it's clearly useless against this ancient darkness. The cold metal feels like a pathetic shield against the swirling power around us. "I'm not letting you all rush into a meat grinder," I mutter through gritted teeth. "We stop and plan for five damn minutes. Let the monsters come to us if they want a fight so badly."
Jeane's glyphs flare with dark energy as she faces down the monstrosity looming before them. This thing... it knows us somehow—our magic signatures, our weaknesses. Her crimson eyes narrow as she studies the towering form with predatory focus.
She turns to Varrika, her expression a mixture of calculation and barely restrained hunger. Whatever this ancient horror wants from you specifically—that's our leverage point. If we can understand why it fixated on you, we might be able to turn its obsession against it. Jeane's wings snap wide instinctively as she readies another spell.
Her gaze flicks to Halie, the cleric's grip on her silver holy symbol drawing a smirk. Your key is interesting... but we don't have time for careful exploration right now. Whatever's down there—her eyes track the emerging arthropod horror—and whatever's still at the gate, they're both moving fast. We need to act before this situation spirals completely out of control. Jeane steps closer to Halie, her voice dropping lower—dangerous. I appreciate your caution, but hesitation won't save us here. We draw these threats into a space we can control—use Varrika's dwarven bloodline as bait while Merrin and Seraphine provide cover fire and disruption magic. If we do this right, my... she pauses ...experience with certain ancient entities might just give us the edge we need. Her eyes narrow as another psychic probe from the ward spirit makes her wince. And while we're at it, I'll deal with whatever's trying to burrow into our minds. This ward magic has teeth—literally tasted my power and now won't back off. Jeane extends her hand towards Halie, palm up—an offer of partnership rather than command. Trust me on this: if we do this right, I have a few... tricks up my sleeve that might just send these things back to whatever hell they crawled out of. But we need to move now, before it's too late. What do you say? Ready to put your faith in some demonic expertise? As she speaks, Jeane's glyphs pulse faster, responding to the ancient powers swirling around them.
The dwarf warrior's eyes narrow as she sees the grotesque arthropod emerge from the wall burst, its multiple eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. The creature's presence only adds to the mounting sense of danger and unease that permeates the chamber. "Damn it all," Varrika mutters under her breath, her grip tightening on her greatsword hilt. "One ancient horror wasn't enough—now we've got a whole den of them." She glances at Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs flare with dark energy as she prepares another spell. The hunger in the woman's eyes makes Varrika's skin crawl, but she can't deny the logic of her plan.
Varikka turns to Halie, her voice gruff but urgent. "I know you're trying to protect us, but sometimes we gotta meet danger head-on." She takes a step forward, her greatsword raised in challenge to the looming monstrosity at the gate. "We use what we've got—my dwarven bloodline as bait, your key as a potential weapon, Merrin and Seraphine for cover fire. And if Jeane's 'tricks' can send these things back to hell..." Varrika shrugs, a grim acceptance settling over her features. "Then we do what we have to do."
As the arthropod creature scuttles closer, its multiple eyes fixed on the party with malevolent intent, Varrika feels a wave of fear wash over her. But beneath that fear is a grim determination—a certainty that they will not go down without a fight. "Alright," she says, turning to face the emerging threats squarely. "Let's do this. We draw them in, use every weapon at our disposal, and pray to whatever gods are listening that we make it out of here alive." With that, the dwarf warrior takes a deep breath and charges forward, her greatsword raised high as she prepares to face the ancient horrors head-on.
Merrin's crossbow snaps up, her arrow trained on the grotesque arthropod as it scuttles closer. The halfling scout's heart pounds in her chest, adrenaline surging through her veins as she takes aim at the creature's glowing eyes. "Damn it, Halie," she mutters under her breath, even as she understands the cleric's reluctance to rush into danger. "We can't just stand here and let these things come to us."
Her gaze flickers to Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs flare with dark energy. The hunger in the woman's eyes makes Merrin's skin crawl, but she can't deny the logic of her plan. "Alright," the halfling says sharply, nocking another arrow to her crossbow. "We do this smart, like Jeane said. Varrika as bait, with disruptive magic and crossbow cover."
As Varrika charges forward, her greatsword raised high, Merrin feels a wave of fear wash over her. But beneath that fear is a grim determination—a certainty that they will not go down without a fight. "Let's do this," the halfling mutters, her finger tightening on the trigger as she takes aim at the looming monstrosity at the gate. "We draw them in, use every weapon at our disposal, and pray to whatever gods are listening that we make it out of here alive."
With that, Merrin lets loose a volley of arrows, aiming for the arthropod's eyes and any other vulnerable spots she can see. The halfling's mind races as she reloads, trying to think of any other ways they might be able to turn this situation to their advantage. "Seraphine, Halie—whatever tricks you've got up your sleeves, now's the time," she calls out, even as she continues to fire arrow after arrow at the approaching horrors.
In the back of her mind, Merrin can't shake the feeling that there's something more going on here than meets the eye. The ancient magic of this place, the way these creatures seem to know them... it's as if some larger power is manipulating them like pieces on a chessboard. But for now, all she can do is trust in her skills and the abilities of her companions, and hope that together they might be able to survive whatever hellish trials await them in the depths of this accursed tower.
I feel a chill trace its way down my spine as I watch Varrika charge forward, her greatsword raised high. The dwarf warrior's bravery is admirable, but also terrifying in the face of such overwhelming odds. My mind races, trying to piece together the fragments of ancient lore and forbidden magic that might give us some kind of advantage against these creatures.
Merrin's arrows whistle past me, aimed at the grotesque arthropod that scuttles closer with each passing second. Her precision is impressive, but I can see in her eyes the same fear that grips my own heart. This is no ordinary monster—it moves with a purpose, drawn by some dark power we don't yet understand.
The ward spirit's psychic tendrils continue to probe at my mind, hot needles digging deeper into my thoughts. It feels like an invasion, a violation of everything I hold sacred as a scholar of the arcane arts. I raise my silver holy symbol, even though I know it offers little protection against such primal forces.
As Jeane prepares another spell, her glyphs flaring with dark energy, I feel a renewed sense of unease. Her 'tricks', whatever they may be, seem to carry their own brand of danger—one that threatens to consume us all if we're not careful. And yet, in this moment of chaos and desperation, her expertise might just be what tips the balance in our favor.
I turn my attention to Halie, who clutches a strange key in her hand. The way the runes on the gate pulse in response is unnerving, as if the very structure of reality is being rewritten around this object. "Halie," I call out, my voice strained with urgency. "That key—it could be the key to everything here. We need to understand what it does before we can hope to defeat these creatures."
