The ancient power emanating from the dark maw surges forward, and a figure begins to take shape within its swirling vortex. The creature's single glowing eye fixes on Varrika, its malevolent intent clear. As the figure solidifies into a towering monstrosity, it raises a massive clawed hand towards the dwarf warrior. The air around them seems to thicken with dark magic, making it hard to breathe. Halie stumbles back, her voice trembling as she calls out warnings and tactical suggestions. Jeane's glyphs on her skin pulse faster in response to the malevolent energy, and Merrin's crossbow is trained on the darkness, ready to fire at any sign of movement. Varrika stands firm, her greatsword at the ready. She knows that look—the grim determination mixed with primal fear etched on the creature's face. The halfling rogue, Merrin, positions herself beside Varrika, ready to cover the dwarf warrior's flanks and support her in whatever way she can. The creature's hand comes closer, its massive claws snapping mere inches from Varrika's face. The ward spirit's psychic probing intensifies, making it difficult for the party to focus. The runes on the ancient gate pulse ominously in the background, as if responding to the emerging threat.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane feels the ancient power radiating from the maw like a physical blow, her wings instinctively flaring as she raises one hand in a warding gesture. The glyphs etched across her skin pulse with dark energy, responding to the malevolent presence even as they burn cold against her flesh. This is beyond what Elric prepared us for—this thing... it's not just some guardian, it knows Varrika by name or bloodline somehow. Her crimson eyes narrow as she studies the creature’s form emerging from the darkness, cataloging every detail with predatory focus.

Halie’s right—whatever this thing wants from Varrika, we can’t let it separate us. But if it’s targeting her specifically... that changes everything. Jeane glances at Merrin positioning herself beside the dwarf warrior, then to Seraphine moving to reinforce their defenses. We need to understand what makes Varrika so special to this ancient horror—could be her dwarven lineage, could be something else entirely. Knowledge is power here, and we don’t have much of it. She feels the ward spirit’s probing intensify, hot needles driving into her mind, but pushes back with disciplined focus. The ward magic... it tasted us all earlier when we touched those runes. This thing might know more about each of us than we realize—our magical signatures, our weaknesses. A cold smile touches her lips despite the fear coiling in her gut. Or maybe just mine specifically... The glyphs on Jeane’s skin flare brighter as she completes her disruptive spell and unleashes it towards the maw—a wave of arcane energy meant to stabilize the space around the emergence point and contain whatever comes through, buying them time. Everyone back away—we don’t know what this thing is capable of yet. Varrika, stay calm but ready—I have a theory I need to test. Her hand moves to one of the pouches at her belt, fingers closing around something small and cold within.

If this creature is bound to ancient dwarven magic like those runes on the gate suggested... then perhaps its weakness lies in that same connection. Jeane’s gaze flicks to the partially open door beside them, leading deeper into the tower. I think it’s time we tested that theory—if we can draw this thing away from the gate and into the tower proper where we have more options for terrain and cover... She turns back to face the monstrosity fully now, her expression a mixture of cold calculation and barely restrained hunger. This thing wants Varrika—for what purpose we don’t know yet. But if we can use that as bait while preparing an ambush inside... we might be able to turn its own obsession against it. Jeane’s wings snap wide, glyphs pulsing with dark energy as she readies another spell. Who’s with me? We go in fast and quiet—use the darkness of the tower corridors to our advantage before this ancient horror can fully manifest its power. Her voice drops lower, almost a purr. Don’t worry—I won’t let it take any of us without a fight. Including you, Varrika. A dangerous smile curves her full lips. Trust me on this—if we do this right, I have a few... tricks up my sleeve that might just send this thing back to whatever hell it crawled out of.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes narrow as she watches the monstrous figure emerge from the darkness, its single glowing eye fixed on Varrika with malevolent intent. The halfling rogue feels a surge of fear, but also a grim determination to protect her companions at all costs.

This thing... it knows us somehow. Our magic signatures, our weaknesses. She glances at Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs pulsing with dark energy. Jeane's right—we can't let it separate us. Whatever it wants from Varrika... we need to understand why before we can fight it. Merrin's gaze darts to the partially open door leading deeper into the tower, then back to the monstrosity looming before them. Drawing this thing away from the gate... that could work if we're careful. Use the darkness of the corridors to our advantage, set up an ambush. She nods slowly, her mind racing with possibilities. But we need a plan—something to exploit this creature's obsession with Varrika without putting her at too much risk. The rogue's hand tightens on her crossbow, ready to fire at any sign of movement. Jeane... what kind of tricks did you have in mind? Her eyes flick to the succubus, a hint of suspicion in their depths. And how far are you willing to go to send this thing back to whatever hell it came from?

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch the monstrous figure emerge from the darkness, its single glowing eye fixed on Varrika with terrifying intent. The air around us crackles with ancient power, and I feel the ward spirit's probing intensify until it feels like hot needles being driven into my brain.
This thing... it knows us somehow. Our magic signatures, our weaknesses. I think, my mind racing as I try to process what we’re facing. My gaze darts to Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs pulsing with dark energy—a sign that even her powerful magic is struggling against this malevolence.
Merrin's suggestion about drawing the creature away from the gate makes a certain kind of sense. The darkness of the tower corridors could give us an advantage, but it also means entering deeper into the unknown. And Jeane's talk of 'tricks'... my stomach twists with unease at the thought of what that might entail.
"Jeane," I say, my voice so low it’s almost inaudible over the thrumming magic, "what kind of tricks did you have in mind?" I ask, trying to keep my tone neutral even as a tremor of fear and anticipation runs through me. My hands tighten on my staff, the arcane symbols etched into its surface feeling suddenly cold against my skin.
Varrika's grim determination is admirable, but I can see the fear in her eyes too. This creature... it seems to have some kind of connection to her dwarven lineage or ancient bloodline. That could be crucial if we're going to survive this encounter.
"I think Merrin's right," I continue, my mind working furiously to find a solution that will keep all of us safe. "If we can draw it away from the gate, use the terrain and cover of the tower... maybe we can set up an ambush. But we need more information about what this thing wants from Varrika first."
I turn to face the monstrosity fully now, my own power coiling within me in preparation for whatever spell might be needed. The runes on the ancient gate pulse ominously, almost as if they’re responding to the emerging threat. It's clear that whatever this is... it's tied to the very core of this tower’s dark history.
My eyes meet Varrika's across the chamber, and I see the same mixture of fear and resolve reflected back at me. We have to protect her while still trying to unravel this mystery. The key in my pocket feels suddenly heavy with significance. Maybe it holds some answer—some way to seal this horror back up once we deal with it.
"Varrika, I need to know everything you can remember about your dwarven lineage," I say urgently, my voice just above a whisper. "Any legends, any stories... anything that might explain why this creature is so fixated on you." I take a step closer, lowering my voice further. "And Jeane... what you were implying earlier about using magic to... influence its desires... be careful. The last thing we need is another ancient horror with a taste for succubi."
