The air in the hidden chamber grew thick and heavy, resistant to their every movement as if they swam through deep water. The glyphs on the tree trunk pulsed with renewed fury, each beat sending fresh tendrils of dark energy snaking across the stone floor toward them. Jeane staggered back from the edge of the wall-maw, her wings partially unfurled in a defensive posture that spoke of instinctive fear rather than calculated strategy. The air crackled with an unnatural energy, making her skin prickle and her arcane senses scream warnings.

Merrin, quick-fingered and ever-cautious, had already nocked another bolt, her crossbow trained on the pulsing symbols etched into the ancient wood. Her mind raced through potential outcomes—each bolt a gamble against an enemy she couldn't properly see or understand. The glyphs were no longer responding to words alone; they pulsed with every beat of her heart, drawing power from something deeper within the earth itself.

Seraphine watched the unfolding horror with wide eyes and clenched fists, her elegant robes suddenly feeling too flimsy for such a battle. The ward spirit's manifestation was terrifyingly real—a towering figure of pure magic that seemed to absorb and radiate the very essence of the ancient structure. As its tendrils lashed out, striking at Jeane and sending her flying across the room, she felt a surge of fear. This was no ordinary ward; it was alive, it was angry, and it seemed to be drawing power directly from them.

Varrika moved without hesitation, her powerful dwarf frame positioning itself between the wall-maw and her companions. The massive spider that emerged was unlike any she'd faced before—its chitinous exoskeleton glinting with an oily sheen that spoke of corruption on a scale she'd never encountered. Her mace felt suddenly inadequate against such a foe, but retreat wasn't in her nature.

The air crackled again as Jeane began weaving a spell, arcane symbols glowing at her fingertips. "Merrin, keep hitting those," she gasped out between heaving breaths, "they're its eyes and ears—if we blind it, maybe we can break its concentration." Her voice was steady despite the obvious pain from her recent impact, but there was an undercurrent of genuine concern in her tone. This wasn't a simple puzzle to solve with magic anymore; it had become a desperate struggle for survival against something that fed on their very essence.

Merrin didn't hesitate. The bolt streaked through the air and slammed into the center of the largest glyph just as Jeane unleashed her arcane blast. For a moment, it seemed the combined assault might work—the symbols flickered, the tendrils recoiling as if in pain. Then the ground beneath them heaved again, a fresh wave of dark energy erupting from the tree trunk and the wall-maw alike. The ward spirit wasn't just alive—it was angry, and it was hungry.

They had awakened something ancient and terrible, and now they would pay the price for their curiosity.
