Phase: escalating

The magic pulsed like a living thing, beating in time with their hearts, filling the crumbling stone chamber with an energy that seemed to seep into their very bones. Merrin, ever cautious, moved forward slowly, her halfling eyes scanning every shadow for movement or threat. The newly revealed staircase stretched out before them, descending into darkness that seemed to swallow the flickering torchlight whole—an invitation and a warning wrapped in one.
She could feel it now, an almost physical pressure against her skin, like fingers tracing patterns just out of reach. Seraphine raised her hands instinctively, weaving arcane symbols that glowed with a faint blue light—the only color visible in the oppressive gloom. The wizard's face was set in concentration as she drew upon her dwindling mana reserves to maintain the shield spell.
Varrika stepped forward, her scarred fingers tightening around the haft of her mace. "We can't trust this magic," she growled, her eyes scanning the flickering shadows for any sign of movement. The air crackled with energy, and the very stones seemed to hum with ancient power.
Jeane moved closer to Seraphine, her wings beating slowly in a steady rhythm that seemed to push back against the pulsing darkness around them. "This magic remembers," she murmured, her voice low and urgent. Whatever dark rituals had been performed here, whatever purpose this tower once served—its magic had survived intact for centuries.
Merrin nodded grimly. "We can't turn back now. But we don't rush in blind either." She turned to Seraphine. "Can you boost the light from your shield? We'll need every advantage down there."
The wizard nodded slowly, her fingers moving through more arcane gestures as the blue glow of her shield spell intensified. The light cast long shadows that danced across the ancient stone walls in ways that seemed almost... alive.
Halie stepped forward then, her silver holy symbol clutched in trembling hands. "And Halie—your prayers may be our only true shield," Merrin added softly. The young woman nodded, closing her eyes as she began to murmur a prayer to her goddess of light.
As the group prepared to descend into the waiting darkness below, the air seemed to grow even heavier, the magic pulsing more insistently around them. Whatever secrets lay hidden in the depths of this tower, they were about to uncover them—whether they wanted to or not.
