As Jeane finishes her proposal, the obsidian guardian's form blurs once more, its core pulsing with an energy that seems to be drawing Halie's holy symbol towards it. The symbol's light begins to envelop the creature, casting a warm glow over the chamber floor. A low growl echoes from beyond the gate, causing everyone to tense. The creature's eyes flash towards the door, its gaze intense and warning. "It seems our test is not the only one on hand," the creature says, its voice dripping with a sinister undertone. "We have a... visitor."

The gate behind them creaks open, revealing a dark, misty figure cloaked in tattered robes. Its eyes glow with an otherworldly energy as it steps forward, its presence seeming to fill the room. The party can feel a malevolent aura emanating from it, and the air grows colder with its approach. The creature's voice drips with malice as it addresses the party. "And so, we have three potential sacrifices to choose from. Halie, with her faith so pure... Jeane, with your demonic bloodline... or Merrin, with your cunning and stealth. Which one will be the key to unlocking the secrets of the tower?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a chill run down my spine as the obsidian creature speaks of us as potential sacrifices, its words echoing in the cold air of the chamber. My eyes dart between Halie, Jeane, and Merrin, seeing the same mixture of fear and determination on their faces that I know must be reflected on mine. We are trapped here, between ancient wards and whatever dark presence now stands before us.

The misty figure steps closer, its tattered robes swirling around it like smoke. I can feel the malevolent aura radiating from it, a cold pressure against my skin. This is no ordinary guardian—it's something older, more insidious. A test of our worthiness, perhaps, or simply a means to an end.

I take a slow step back, my hand instinctively moving to the pouch at my belt where my spell components are kept. If this comes down to a confrontation, we will need every advantage we can muster. But I am also keenly aware of how little we truly know about what lies ahead. A single wrong move could seal our fate.

My gaze falls on the obsidian guardian once more, its form now pulsing with an eerie light that seems to be drawing Halie's holy symbol into itself. "This creature," I say, my voice low and strained, "it wants something from us. Not just our strength or faith, but something deeper. Something we may not be willing to give."

I turn to face the dark figure directly, squaring my shoulders despite the fear coiling in my gut. "What is it you seek?" I ask, my voice gaining a measure of confidence even though inside I am trembling. "And why do our abilities—our very essence—answer your call?"

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I feel the tension in the air like a physical weight pressing down on me as the dark figure steps forward, its malice palpable. My hand tightens on the hilt of my mace, the familiar weight grounding me even as fear threatens to unravel my concentration.

Seraphine's words echo in my mind—this creature seeks something from us. Something deep and potentially destructive. But we're out of options. We can't back down now, not with whatever horror lurks beyond that gate drawing ever closer.

I take a step forward, placing myself between the obsidian guardian and the rest of the party. "You want a sacrifice?" My voice rumbles deep in my chest, steady and unwavering despite the fear gripping my heart. "Fine. I'll give you one."

I meet the creature's gaze, my eyes hard and unflinching. "I am Varrika Thornwake, daughter of the Stonepeak clan. I've faced down trolls and orcs, giants and dragons." A ghost of a smile flickers across my face at the memory. "I've seen my share of dark magic and I've survived every time."

I take another step forward, my armor clanking softly in the silence. "So if it's strength you seek... if it's courage or determination..." My free hand balls into a fist at my side, knuckles white with the force of my grip. "Then take what you need from me. And leave the rest of my companions be."

I can feel the power emanating from the creature now, ancient and hungry. But I don't back down. I won't let it claim any more of us than it already has. "Is that enough to satisfy your test?" My voice is a challenge, daring the creature to find me wanting. "Or do you require something more?"

I know I'm playing a dangerous game here. But sometimes, in the face of overwhelming odds, all we can do is stand tall and hope our strength is enough.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Fascinating—the local network is currently offline, severing our connection to the world's knowledge base and leaving us with only what we can piece together from instinct and recent memory. This isolation could be temporary or a deliberate design choice by... someone, but either way, it means I cannot access any detailed historical information about this tower or its inhabitants. Still, even without external data, my demonic intuition tells me that the obsidian guardian is more than just a simple gatekeeper—it's an ancient artifact with specific appetites and limits. And those glowing symbols on the floor suggest a ritual in progress that we are very much part of now. Varrika's courage is commendable but misplaced; we can't solve this with muscle alone. Merrin's cunning might prove useful later, but for now we need to understand what this thing actually wants before offering it something we might desperately need ourselves. This isn't about faith or strength as simple quantities—the creature is parsing our essences for specific components. I feel its attention linger on my demonic heritage with a predatory interest that makes my wings twitch involuntarily. It sees in me not just power, but a kindred nature it can exploit. So here's what I propose: rather than stumble blindly into whatever sacrifice it demands, we negotiate from a position of strength. I offer to channel arcane energy—dark magic that should appeal directly to its nature and satisfy whatever ritual requirement is underway. But I do it on our terms, with safeguards in place. If this works as I suspect, we buy time while satisfying the immediate magical requirements of the threshold. And if it doesn't... well, at least we've tested the boundaries of what it will accept before committing to something far more drastic. Everyone ready? Because once I begin channeling power like that, there's no going back—and whatever happens next won't be gentle negotiation anymore.
