The air vibrates with anticipation as the obsidian creature's form blurs once more, its core pulsing with an energy that seems to be drawing Halie's holy symbol towards it. The symbol's light begins to envelop the creature, casting a warm glow over the chamber floor. "Your faith is indeed intriguing, Halie," the creature's voice echoes off the stone walls. "But to prove your strength, you must first confront the darkness within yourself." The creature's form shifts again, its solidification now accompanied by a faint, eerie glow that seems to be drawing Jeane closer. As the creature speaks, the growling from beyond the gate recedes, replaced by an expectant silence. The symbol on its surface pulses in time with Halie's holy symbol, creating an energy that both attracts and repels. Seraphine watches intently, her eyes locked onto the symbol as she searches for understanding.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie’s breath catches as her holy symbol pulses with an otherworldly light, its glow spilling across the chamber floor and seeming to draw a response from the obsidian guardian. The magic feels ancient, potent—both familiar in its divine resonance and utterly foreign in this profane place. She can sense it now—the creature’s attention fixed on her faith, testing its strength against the darkness that clings to these stones like cobwebs.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin watches as Halie's holy symbol pulses with an otherworldly light, its glow spilling across the chamber floor and drawing the attention of the obsidian guardian. She can sense the creature's interest in Halie's faith, testing it against the darkness that clings to these ancient stones like cobwebs.

The halfling's hand tightens on her mace as she steps closer to Jeane, her crimson eyes fixed on the pulsing symbol. "This thing... it's drawing power from Halie's faith," Merrin whispers, her voice laced with concern and a hint of awe. "Whatever it is, whatever test it's giving us... we need to be careful."

She glances at Seraphine, noting the wizard's intense focus on the glowing symbol. "Seraphine, I know you're trying to understand this power... but pushing too far could be dangerous," Merrin warns softly. "We don't know what this creature wants from us. And if it's demanding sacrifice..." Her gaze drifts to the darkness beyond the gate where something growls, a reminder of the ever-present danger lurking in this cursed place.

Merrin takes a deep breath, her mind racing through the possibilities. "Jeane's right about one thing—this isn't about brute force," she concedes, her voice barely audible. "But if Halie's faith is what this thing is testing... then maybe there's a way to use that to our advantage."

The halfling's eyes narrow as she studies the pulsing symbol, her quick mind already working on a plan. "Halie, whatever you do... be careful," Merrin advises, her tone both warning and encouragement. "Your faith is strong, but this darkness..." She shudders slightly, the memories of the tower's earlier tests still fresh in her mind. "It's unlike anything we've faced before. So be ready for anything."

Merrin takes a step back, her posture tense and ready for whatever comes next. "We move forward together," the halfling agrees, echoing Jeane's earlier statement. "But we do it with our eyes open. Whatever this creature offers... whatever it demands..." Her gaze locks onto Halie for a moment. "...we weigh every word carefully. Because in deals like these?" She turns back to the obsidian guardian. "The fine print can be deadly."

Merrin's hand moves to the pouch at her belt, her fingers brushing against the lockpicks and other tools of her trade. "But if there's a way to navigate this test... to find the strength we need to pass its judgment..." A sly smile tugs at the corner of her mouth as she meets Varrika's eyes. "Then by the gods, we'll find it. Together."

The air crackles with unspoken tension and promise as Merrin takes another step forward, her mace gripped tightly in her hand. "Now then," she purrs, her voice a silken challenge as she fixes the obsidian guardian with a predatory stare. "Let's see what you're truly made of, shall we?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's crimson eyes flash with understanding as she watches Halie's holy symbol pulse in response to the obsidian guardian's presence. The magic between them feels ancient, potent—a dance of light against darkness that sends a thrill down her spine even as warning bells chime in the back of her mind.

She turns to face Seraphine, noting the wizard's intense focus on the glowing symbol. A small frown tugs at Jeane's lips. "Seraphine," she says softly but firmly, "I understand wanting to understand this power... but we're playing with forces far beyond our mortal comprehension here."

Her gaze sweeps over her companions—Halie with her holy symbol blazing, Merrin ready with her mace, Varrika radiating fierce determination. A flicker of concern crosses Jeane's features as she sees it: the group teetering on the edge between curiosity and catastrophe. "This creature... whatever it is..." She gestures at the pulsing symbol with a graceful sweep of her arm. "...it's not just testing our faith or strength. It’s probing us, trying to find our weaknesses."

Jeane takes a step closer to Seraphine, her voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. "I've dealt with ancient entities like this before... and trust me when I say that casual negotiation is often more dangerous than blind aggression." Her eyes lock onto Halie for a moment—seeing the light of her faith shining so brightly in this dark place. "That symbol... it’s drawing power from Halie. And while that might be useful, it also makes her a target."

She turns back to Seraphine, her expression grave but calculating. "If we're going to engage with this thing, we need to do it carefully." Jeane's hand moves to the hilt of her sword—a magical blade forged in demonic fires—but still she doesn't draw it. Not yet. "Let me try something... a ritual that might give us more insight into what we’re facing here."

Before Seraphine can respond, Jeane closes her eyes and begins murmuring arcane words under her breath. The air around them shimmers as she draws on her demonic heritage—tapping into powers that are both dark and ancient. The chamber seems to darken for a moment before the walls begin to pulse with an ethereal glow, revealing intricate patterns of magic etched into the stone.

When Jeane opens her eyes again, they gleam with crimson fire as she stares at the obsidian guardian. "I see it now..." she breathes, her voice barely audible yet carrying a weight that makes everyone present lean in slightly to hear. "...this creature... it's more than just a forgotten guard. It’s a... a gatekeeper." Her gaze drifts to the darkness beyond the gate where something growls again—louder this time, closer.

Jeane takes another step forward, her posture tense and ready for whatever comes next. "Whatever is beyond that threshold..." She gestures at the ominous darkness with a nod of her head. "...it's ancient. Powerful. And whatever this guardian demands as sacrifice..." Her voice drops to a dangerous whisper. "...I suspect it will be worth more than we bargained for."

She turns back to face the group, her expression blending concern and fierce determination. "So here’s what I propose: let me try to communicate with this thing using my demonic bloodline’s... unique understanding of such entities." Jeane's wings shift restlessly behind her as she continues, "But we do it on our terms. With safeguards in place. And with an escape plan ready if things go sideways."

Her crimson eyes meet each companion's gaze in turn—assessing, challenging, demanding their full attention and cooperation. "Are we all in agreement? Or does someone here think we should rush blindly into whatever darkness lies beyond that gate?"
