Round 74 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Halie's holy symbol blazes with an intense light, and the creature's form shimmers in response. The air around it ripples like water, its solid form momentarily distorting before solidifying once more. The creature's eyes lock onto Halie, its gaze piercing and unyielding. The growling from beyond the gate grows louder, a low rumble that seems to vibrate through the chamber's stone floor. Merrin and Varrika hold their positions, ready to react to any change in the creature's form. Jeane watches Halie with a mixture of curiosity and caution, her eyes flicking between the cleric and the shifting creature. The silence is oppressive, punctuated only by the distant sound of scraping metal and the soft hiss of the creature's energy.
I watch as Varrika's mace passes right through the creature's torso, leaving no mark behind. The creature's form flows around the blow before solidifying again in a different shape entirely. This isn't just some magical beast, I think frantically, my mind racing to analyze this new development. It’s a manifestation of the tower's magic itself, a living test designed to repel intruders.
I quickly weave another spell, this one focused on dispelling illusions and revealing true forms. The air crackles with arcane energy as I cast it directly at the creature, my voice rising in a sharp command. "Reveal!"
To my surprise, the creature's form shimmers and solidifies completely, no longer like liquid shadow but more like polished obsidian. It stands there, utterly still, its eyes now fixed on me with an intense, unblinking stare. A heavy silence settles over the chamber, broken only by the distant growling from beyond the gate. It reacted to my spell, I realize, a chill running down my spine. Perhaps it can be reasoned with after all.
I turn to Jeane, my expression one of both excitement and fear. "Wait!" I shout, holding up a hand to stop Varrika's next attack. "I think... I think there might be a way to communicate with it."
I look back at the creature, its solid form still watching me with that unnerving intensity. "It's testing us," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. "And right now, I think it wants to see what kind of magic a wizard can conjure."
I stare at the obsidian creature, my crimson eyes narrowing as I assess its shift from liquid shadow to solid stone. This is no ordinary beast—it's a magical construct, a living test designed to weed out those who would desecrate this ancient place.
The holy symbol in Halie’s hands pulses with divine light, and for a moment, I feel a strange warmth on my skin. It’s not painful, just... present. Interesting, I think, perhaps her faith has some effect here after all.
Varrika’s mace passes through the creature as if it were smoke, and Seraphine’s spell causes its form to solidify completely. Both actions had unintended consequences—one of brute force and one of magic. Both revealed more about this creature than they likely intended.
The growling from beyond the gate grows louder, a menacing rumble that seems to vibrate through the very stones beneath our feet. Whatever lies ahead is responding to our presence here, and I doubt it’s friendly.
I turn to face Seraphine directly, my wings shifting slightly as I consider her words about communicating with the creature. “Perhaps,” I say slowly, "but communication doesn’t always mean understanding. And even if we do understand its rules, that doesn’t guarantee our survival.”
My gaze flicks back to the obsidian guardian, noting the way it watches us so intently. “This place... these tests... they’re designed to strip away pretense and reveal our true nature.” I run a hand through my long white hair, feeling the familiar weight of the engraved runes that mark me as demon-blooded. "And in my experience, such revelations often come with consequences."
I step forward slightly, addressing the creature directly even though I know it likely can’t understand my words in the way we do. “You speak of passing a test,” I say to Seraphine, “but what kind of test? One of faith? Of strength? Or perhaps... one of sacrifice?” The word catches in my throat, remembering too clearly the entity that demanded such a thing earlier.
My eyes meet Halie’s across the chamber, and I see the concern there. "Your holy symbol..." I begin slowly, "it responds to something here. But we don’t know what that is yet—whether it’s protecting us or marking us for something worse.”
I hold my breath as Varrika's mace passes through the creature like smoke through stone. The holy symbol in my hands pulses with divine energy, its light spilling across Jeane's pale face and down into the darkness of the pit below us. The whispers from the shadows fade to a low hiss as I maintain the prayer, but the creature doesn't so much as flinch. It just stands there, watching us with those unnatural eyes that feel like they're peeling back layers I never meant to show. My palms begin to ache from the heat of the symbol, but I don't let up—won't lower it even if it scorches my skin completely. Not after what Jeane did for us.
When Seraphine dispels the shadows and solidifies the creature into obsidian, a different kind of tension coils in my gut. This isn't brute force anymore. This is magic against magic, and in this cursed tower, that's a far more dangerous game.
