The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance now slightly ajar with ancient runes shifted, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

"Jeane, wait!" I cry out, my voice cracking with urgency. The thought of her facing this thing alone makes my heart race. "Let me try something first." Without waiting for a response, I reach into my robes and pull out my Silver Holy Symbol of the Goddess of Light—the one Jeane herself convinced me to bring. It feels heavy in my hand as I hold it up, letting its soft glow illuminate our faces. "Oh Great One who watches over lost souls," I begin, my voice shaking but steady. "Your servant calls upon your divine presence in this place of darkness and despair. Guide us, shield us from the evil that lurks here, and lend your strength to those who seek only to do good." The air around me shimmers as I channel a prayer, and for a moment, the whispers seem to fade away. When I open my eyes again, the creature is still there, its gaze fixed on Jeane. But something has changed—I can feel it in the way the magic responds to my call. The holy symbol in my hand heats up slightly, almost painfully hot, and I have to grip it harder to keep from dropping it. "Did you see that?" I hiss to Merrin beside me. "The creature... it reacted." The heat in my palm is almost too much to bear now, but I hold firm. "This thing—it's not just some beast. It's something else. Something ancient and tied to the magic of this place."

I turn back to Jeane, my eyes pleading. "Let me be the one to face it down. My faith is stronger than yours in this realm—I can handle it." The words come out harsher than intended, but fear makes me bold rather than timid. "Or at least," I add more softly, "let us work together. Your power and mine—combined, we might stand a chance against whatever this thing truly is."

The holy symbol in my hand pulses with heat, and I can feel sweat beading on my forehead from the effort of holding it aloft. But I don't lower it—I keep my gaze fixed on the creature, ready to act if necessary. "Well?" I challenge the creature directly. "What have you to say for yourself, guardian of this accursed tower? Speak now, or face the wrath of a higher power!"

I know it's risky—poking at ancient magic with my own faith—but we're running out of options. And if this thing is truly testing us... well, I refuse to let Jeane bear that burden alone. My palms are slick with sweat as I hold the holy symbol up, its light fighting against the oppressive darkness of the chamber. Every second feels like an eternity as I wait for the creature's response—or worse, some new horror to emerge from the shadows at my provocation. But I can't back down now. Not after what we've already been through. The thought of losing anyone else—of failing again to protect those I care about—that's a fear far greater than any ancient guardian could conjure. So I stand tall, my heart pounding in my chest, and wait for whatever comes next.

As Halie's holy symbol flares with divine light, I feel a sudden surge of arcane energy wash over me, unlike anything I've ever experienced before. It's both terrifying and exhilarating, a raw power that seems to course through the very stones of this accursed tower. This isn't just some random beast, I think, my mind racing with newfound understanding. It's a guardian, a test. And if Halie's faith can affect it... then perhaps there’s a way to use magic against itself.
I take a step closer to the pit's edge, my eyes fixed on the creature. Its gaze shifts from Jeane to me, and for a moment, I feel utterly exposed, as if it can see right through my layers of knowledge and experience. But then I catch a flicker of something in its eyes—recognition? Fear? It’s too quick to be certain. "Halie," I say, my voice steady despite the hammering in my chest, "you may be onto something. This creature... it's not just defending the tower. It's a trial of some kind."
My hands twitch at my sides, fingers moving in intricate patterns as I begin to weave an intricate spell, one that I've only ever theorized about until now. It’s a gambit, a desperate ploy born out of necessity and the raw power thrumming through this place. "Jeane," I call over my shoulder, not taking my eyes off the creature, "keep Halie safe. Merrin, Varrika—be ready for anything."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what comes next. This is my moment—the chance to prove the value of my studies, of all the forbidden tomes I've pored over in secret. The air crackles around me as I begin to cast, my voice rising in a chant of ancient power. "Now," I whisper to the creature, my eyes locking with its own, "let's see if your master's magic can withstand a little... academic rivalry."
