Round 68 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Halie steps into the unknown, she hears a faint whispering in her ear, the words indistinguishable but the malevolent intent clear. The growling creature behind her takes another step forward, its eyes fixed on her with an unnatural hunger. The pulsing green light from the portal behind her seems to grow brighter, as if the very fabric of reality is straining to contain the darkness within. Merrin's voice echoes through the chamber, "Varrika, I've got your six! But we need to move, now!" The sound of scuttling claws and scraping stone signals that the creature is closing in. Halie readies her crossbow, preparing to defend herself against the imminent attack. Suddenly, the ground beneath her feet gives way, and she finds herself sliding into a hidden pit, the air rushing past her as she falls into darkness. Consequence: Halie is now in a hidden pit, with no clear way out. New detail: The walls of the pit are lined with ancient carvings, depicting a figure with piercing eyes that seem to watch her every move. Immediate pressure: Halie must decide how to proceed, either trying to find a way out or waiting for her companions to join her.
Jeane stands at the edge of the ward she just cast, her crimson eyes fixed on Halie as she prepares to step through the portal. This is madness. We don't know what's beyond that threshold—Halie, wait! Her voice is sharp with command but undercut by genuine concern. The demoness takes a step forward, wings rustling in agitation.
The entity before them snarls again, its form seeming to grow more substantial by the second. Merrin... gods, what have you done? Jeane mutters, her gaze flicking between Halie and the portal's growing luminescence. There has to be another way. We can find alternatives to this... this profanity. She draws a deep breath, her fingers tracing arcane symbols in the air as she prepares a spell. Fine. If you insist on rushing headlong into peril, at least let me— The growling creature lunges forward suddenly, cutting off her words. Jeane's eyes narrow dangerously.
The winged sorceress raises her hand, crimson energy gathering between her fingertips. Stand down, abomination, before I reduce you to ash and salt! This tower belongs to darker powers than yours! She keeps her focus on the creature but her voice is directed at Halie. Last chance. Walk away from that portal now, or face whatever horrors lie beyond it with my blessing... and my regret. Jeane's other hand moves to her hip, fingers brushing against the hilt of a hidden dagger—her blade of choice for close-quarters combat where area-of-effect spells could prove disastrous. I won't let your sacrifice be in vain if you insist on this course. But know this: some bargains are too high a price even for salvation. The demoness's wings flare, casting her in an ominous silhouette against the tower's gloom. Choose wisely, Halie. The path of martyrs is rarely as glorious as it seems. She readies herself, energy crackling around her form—waiting for either Halie to heed her warning or the creature to make its move. The air grows thick with arcane potential, charged and ready to unleash hell if necessary.
Merrin's eyes dart between Halie and the growling creature, her heart pounding in her chest. The air is thick with tension, the ancient magic of the tower seeming to pulse around them. She can feel the weight of Jeane's gaze on her back, the demoness's warning echoing in her ears.
But even as the fear rises in her throat, Merrin knows that she can't turn back now. Not after everything they've been through, not with Halie's safety at stake. She takes a deep breath, her fingers tightening around the crossbow in her hands.
I'm coming with you, Halie, she says, her voice steady despite the pounding of her heart. We'll face whatever lies beyond that portal together.
I hear Halie's cry echo off the stones, and my heart lurches in my chest. I can't let her face this alone, not after everything we've been through. I take a step forward, my heavy boots thudding against the floor, and level my crossbow at the snarling creature. "Halie! Hold on!" I shout, my voice echoing off the crumbling walls. The beast lunges forward, its fangs glinting in the pulsing green light from the portal behind me. I loose an arrow, the bolt finding purchase in the creature's shoulder. It snarls in pain and fury, but doesn't relent. I can feel the air thicken with malevolent energy, the ancient magic of the tower reacting to our presence. But I don't have time to dwell on that now. Halie's safety is my top priority, and I won't rest until she's back in my arms again. I take another step forward, my mace gripped tightly in my other hand. The creature growls, its eyes fixed on me with an unnatural hunger. But I don't flinch. I've faced worse than this before, and I'll face worse still if it means keeping Halie safe. "Merrin, stay back," I call over my shoulder, not taking my eyes off the beast. "I'll handle this."
I can hear Jeane's voice in the background, her warnings about the dangers beyond the portal. But I push them aside for now. All that matters is getting to Halie and making sure she's safe. So I step forward, ready to fight whatever horrors this tower may hold. The creature snarls, its claws reaching out for me. But I'm ready for it. I swing my mace with all my strength, the heavy metal connecting with a sickening crunch. The beast howls in pain, staggering back. I press my advantage, driving forward with my crossbow at the ready. I can hear Merrin's voice in the background, her encouragement spurring me on. I know that we're playing a dangerous game here, that there may be consequences we can't foresee. But I also know that sometimes, you have to take risks to protect the ones you love. And so I fight on, determined to reach Halie and bring her back to safety. No matter what it takes, no matter what horrors lie ahead. For Halie, and for our mission, I will face whatever comes next.
