Shadow of the Ancients / Run 009 / Main Story
Round 64 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance now slightly ajar with ancient runes shifted, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
Jeane's crimson eyes gleam with predatory intensity as she completes the arcane sigils floating before her. This ward will protect Halie's mind from the worst of what lies within—but make no mistake, nothing can shield a soul completely from its own darkest thoughts. She turns to face Merrin directly, her voice sharpening. Your plan is reckless, rogue. Sending our only truly moral compass into that den of iniquity alone is like tossing a lamb to wolves. She approaches Halie, holding out the glowing ward—an intricate pattern woven from threads of silver light. But if she goes, at least this will give her an edge. A shield against the worst of what awaits her. Her gaze softens fractionally as she looks at Halie. You have our faith in you, Halie. Don't let us down. Jeane's eyes narrow as she considers the growling creature beyond the portal. And while we prepare, someone needs to keep that beast at bay. Merrin—if you truly care about Halie's safety, you'll take point on that distraction. Draw its attention away from the entrance long enough for us to finish preparing. Her voice takes on a dangerous edge. We don't need any more variables in play while we're focused on protecting Halie. The sorceress turns to Seraphine, her tone businesslike despite the gravity of their situation. Wizardess, start working on that link between Halie and us. I'll finish this ward—it won't take long, but every second counts. She begins tracing more sigils in the air, her fingers moving with practiced precision as she weaves protective magic.
As the others begin to move into position, Jeane's eyes flicker back to the dark portal. Whatever happens in there... we face it together, when Halie returns. And if she doesn't— The sorceress cuts herself off, her jaw tightening slightly before she continues in a low voice, If she doesn't, then we go in after her. No matter what it takes. Jeane's wings rustle softly as she focuses on the ward, the arcane symbols glowing brighter with each passing moment. This won't be easy for any of us. But we're stronger together than apart—even if that means sending one of our own into danger first. She looks up at Halie, her expression unreadable. Are you ready to face whatever lies beyond that threshold?
I feel a surge of conflicting emotions as I listen to Jeane's plan. On one hand, I'm grateful for the extra protection she's willing to provide for Halie. That ward could mean the difference between our paladin emerging unscathed from whatever horrors lurk within... or not at all. On the other hand, a small part of me wonders if we're overestimating Halie's strength. She may be our moral compass, but even the most stalwart soul can be shaken by the depths of its own darkness. I turn to face Jeane directly, my expression serious. "Your ward is a gift, sorceress—but don't forget, no magic can shield a mind completely from its own darkest thoughts." I glance at Halie, seeing the determination in her eyes even as she takes a deep breath, clearly steeling herself for what's to come. "This won't be easy for any of us. But if anyone can face what lies ahead and emerge untainted... it's her."
I look at Varrika, meeting her gaze with a nod of understanding. We both know the danger we're sending Halie into—but we also know she's our best chance at scouting this labyrinth safely. I turn to Seraphine next, my voice firm but tinged with concern. "Wizardess—make sure that link is strong. We need to know the moment Halie's in trouble." The thought of her being trapped alone in that place... it makes my stomach churn. Finally, I face the dark portal itself—its ancient runes pulsing with an otherworldly glow. Whatever lies beyond that threshold... it's beyond anything we've faced before. But we have no choice. Halie's our only hope of understanding what we're truly up against here. I step forward, placing a hand on Jeane's shoulder as she works to complete the ward. "Thank you for this," I say quietly. "It may be the thing that keeps Halie sane in there." I glance at the creature still growling just beyond the entrance—its presence a constant reminder of the danger we face. "I'll keep it occupied while you work—draw its attention away from the portal long enough for Halie to slip through unseen."
My hand tightens on my mace as I ready myself for what's to come. This is it—the moment of truth. We're about to send our strongest into an unknown abyss... and pray to whatever gods might be listening that she returns to us unscathed. I turn to Halie one last time, my voice soft but urgent. "You have our faith, Halie. Don't let us down." With that, I step forward—ready to face the beast that threatens our mission. It's time to buy our paladin the few precious moments she needs to slip into the labyrinth unnoticed. May the gods watch over us all... because we're about to need every ounce of their favor if we hope to survive this ordeal.
I keep my crossbow trained on the creature as Merrin steps forward to draw its attention, my heart pounding in my chest. Halie... My voice is soft but urgent, this may be the hardest thing you've ever done. But we believe in you. Whatever lies beyond that threshold—whatever darkness your reflections may show you... you have the strength to endure it. I glance at Jeane's ward, seeing the intricate pattern of silver light. That will help shield your mind, but remember—the true power lies in your conviction. In who you are, deep inside. I turn back to Halie, meeting her gaze with a steady, reassuring look. You're our moral compass, paladin. Our guiding light in this dark place. So go in there with your head held high—knowing that we're here, waiting for you to return. My fingers tighten on my crossbow as I feel the creature's growl intensifying, its shadow looming larger in the darkness. We'll keep this beast at bay while you scout ahead. Find out what we're dealing with in there—and come back to us as soon as you can. I squeeze Halie's shoulder gently before stepping back, giving her room to prepare. You have our faith, Halie. Don't let us down. As she turns to face the portal, I feel a surge of pride mixed with fear. This is it—the moment of truth. May the gods watch over you, and bring you back to us unharmed. I turn my attention fully to the creature now, my muscles coiled and ready for whatever may come. Stay strong, Halie. We're counting on you.
