Round 56 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The air around Jeane crackles with barely contained power as she prepares a spell that might very well trigger whatever ancient wards protect this place. Halie's eyes widen in alarm as she realizes the danger of unleashing raw destructive magic in this situation. The Liminal Wretch's dark tendrils stretch closer to Merrin, their darkness seeming to pulse with a malevolent energy. Suddenly, a faint glow emanates from the holy symbol in Halie's hand, illuminating the dark recesses of the tower entrance. The light is soft and reassuring, but it does little to dispel the feeling of foreboding that settles over the party. The creature's gaze remains fixed on Merrin, its singular focus unwavering. It seems to be waiting for something, its presence both menacing and hypnotic. The party can feel the weight of this test of faith bearing down upon them, a sense of urgency that threatens to overwhelm their resolve. Varrika's hand tightens around her crossbow stock, her finger poised on the trigger. "We need to act fast," she whispers urgently. "Before it reaches Merrin."
I feel my heart pounding in my chest, the darkness of the creature's tendrils stretching towards me like grasping shadows. The air is thick with tension, the weight of this test of faith pressing down on us all. "Wait," I hiss under my breath, my voice trembling. "Don't do it, Jeane. We don't know what will happen if you unleash that spell."
My eyes dart around the group, taking in each of my companions—Halie's fierce determination, Varrika's steady aim, Seraphine's intense focus. And then there's the creature itself, its gaze fixed on me with an unsettling singularity. "It wants Merrin," I whisper, the words barely audible over the pounding of my own heart. "And if we give in to fear, to panic... that's exactly what it'll get."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I'm about to do. It goes against every instinct, every ounce of self-preservation—but right now, it's the only play we have. "Halie," I say softly, "Cover me. If anything moves, shoot it."
Then, before anyone can stop me, I take a step forward. Then another. Each movement feels like wading through treacle, my limbs heavy with dread—but I force myself onward. Towards the creature. Towards whatever fate awaits me.
As I move, I feel the tendrils of darkness shift, their focus now solely on me. They seem to pulse with anticipation, like a predator scenting its prey. "You want Merrin?" I call out, my voice shaking but steady. "Then take me."
I extend my hands before me, palms up in a gesture of surrender. "But first, show us what this test is really about. What kind of faith do you seek?"
I stand there, exposed and vulnerable, waiting for the creature's response. Waiting to see if my gamble will pay off—or if I've just sealed all our fates.
My heart hammers in my chest as I take those fateful steps towards the Liminal Wretch. Every instinct screams at me to run, to hide—but I ignore it. This is our only chance.
As I move closer, I feel the darkness of the creature's tendrils enveloping me. They're cold and clammy against my skin, sending shivers down my spine. But I don't flinch. I can't.
"Listen," I say, my voice trembling but steady. "If you want to test our faith, then test it. But not like this. Not by threatening one of us." My eyes lock onto the creature's shadowy form, trying to find some semblance of understanding in its inscrutable gaze. "We're here for the Time-Splitting Sword. That's our purpose, our goal. So if you want to see our faith in action, then give us a chance to prove it. Don't just throw one of us to the wolves."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. The air feels thick, heavy with tension and the weight of the unknown. "So here's what we're going to do," I continue, my voice gaining strength as I speak. "We'll face your test. Together. As a party. But on our terms. We don't know what you want from us, but we're willing to find out. So... what do we do now?"
Jeane's crimson eyes gleam in the torchlight as she studies the creature before them—a grotesque amalgamation of shadow and substance, its dark tendrils reaching out towards Merrin like grasping fingers. "A test of faith," she muses aloud, more to herself than anyone else present. Her clawed fingers drum against her thigh in a quick staccato rhythm as she processes the implications.
As Varrika readies her crossbow and Halie holds up her holy symbol, Jeane's wings shift restlessly behind her back, the movement revealing glimpses of the intricate black and crimson sigils etched into their membranes—a subtle reminder of her own deep connection to dark magic and arcane knowledge. Her gaze sweeps across each member of their impromptu party in turn—Halie with her trembling hands gripping that holy symbol, Varrika steadying her crossbow, Seraphine already moving through arcane knowledge for countermeasures.
Jeane's eyes narrow as the creature's tendrils stretch towards Merrin—an unmistakable threat. "No," she mutters, her voice low and urgent. "We can't let it touch her." For a brief moment, something almost like regret flickers through those crimson eyes before hardening into cold calculation again. The sorceress knows better than most the dangers of dabbling in ancient powers—and yet here they are, faced with what appears to be some kind of twisted trial designed to test their faith.
Her gaze falls on Merrin as the halfling steps forward towards the creature, extending her hands palms-up in a gesture of surrender. "Wait," Jeane calls out, her voice sharp with alarm. "Merrin, stop! You don't know what that thing is capable of. We need to think this through." She turns to Seraphine and Varrika, her expression grim.
"This isn't about bravery or sacrifice—it's a test. A manipulation. And whatever it wants from us... we can't give it what it desires without understanding the consequences." Jeane's hand moves in a complex pattern as she begins weaving a spell—something subtle, designed to probe rather than destroy. "Let me try something. If I can get a read on this creature's true nature, maybe we can anticipate its next move instead of just reacting."
She takes a step forward, positioning herself beside Merrin but not too close—not wanting to provoke the thing directly while still being able to act if needed. "Merrin," Jeane says softly, "I know you're trying to help. But we need a plan here—a strategy that doesn't involve throwing ourselves at this thing blindly." Her voice takes on an edge of frustration mixed with genuine concern. "We've come too far to let some shadow monster play us like pawns in its twisted game."
Jeane's eyes lock onto the creature, her arcane energy crackling around her fingertips as she prepares the spell. "So here's what we're going to do. I'm going to try and get a reading on this thing—its intentions, its limits, anything we can use. Meanwhile, everyone else stands ready but doesn't act unless absolutely necessary." Her gaze sweeps across the group, challenging them to keep their cool. "Can we all agree to that? No rash moves until I've got something concrete?"
I stare at Merrin as she steps forward towards the creature, my stomach twisting with fear and frustration. "Merrin!" I hiss, but it's too late—she's already moving into the darkness' grasp. "Damn it all." My grip tightens on my holy symbol until my knuckles turn white.
I drop to my knees beside her, pressing my back against hers in a show of solidarity even as panic claws at my chest. "Don't you dare touch her," I mutter through clenched teeth, eyes locked on the shadow tendrils coiling around Merrin's outstretched hands. "Whatever happens next, we face it together. I won't let this thing take one of us."
My breathing comes faster now, heart pounding as I try to think through our options. What is she doing? This isn’t a trial you pass with sacrifice—it’s a test of... faith? But what kind? What does that even mean in a place like this? I glance around at the others—Jeane's arcane energy crackling dangerously, Varrika's crossbow aimed steady but uncertain, Seraphine lost in thought. We need to understand what it wants. Merrin thinks offering herself will force its hand, but that’s… that’s too reckless. My voice comes out softer than I intend: "Merrin, listen to me." I can feel her trembling against my back, the fear radiating off her in waves. "We’ve come this far together. Whatever happens next—win or lose—we do it as one."
I turn to Jeane, her crimson eyes gleaming with arcane power that makes me nervous even after all this time. "Jeane," I say sharply, "lower your magic. We don’t know what those wards will do if you set them off."
