As Merrin and Halie fall into step behind Seraphine, her eyes scan the corridor ahead, her hand hovering over the ritual components at her belt. The air is heavy with the stench of decay and corruption, and the silence is oppressive, punctuated only by the faint whispering of the entity's presence. Suddenly, a faint scuttling noise echoes from deeper within the corridor, growing louder with each passing moment. The growling creature emerges from the shadows, its eyes glowing with an unnatural hunger as it fixes Merrin in its gaze. The creature's movements are jerky and unnatural, its very presence seeming to warp the air around it. Seraphine's hand tightens on her mace, ready to strike, while Halie whispers a quick prayer to her goddess, seeking protection from the creature's malevolent energy. The creature takes another step forward, its jaws open wide in a snarling, tooth-filled maw. The party must decide how to react next, and fast, before the creature strikes.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step closer to Merrin, my hand seeking hers in a gesture of solidarity. "Stay behind me," I murmur, though my voice quavers slightly. My grip on the silver holy symbol tightens as I face the creature, drawing on every ounce of faith and courage within me. This thing... it reeks of corruption. We cannot let it touch Merrin—whatever those mist-tendrils wanted from her, this beast might be even worse. I raise my free hand, palm outward, and begin to chant a prayer for protection, the words tumbling out in a rush. "Goddess of Light, shield thy children from darkness! Banish this unholy abomination from our midst!" Power flares around my symbol, casting flickering shadows across the stone walls as I pour every bit of divine energy into the invocation. But something feels... wrong. The magic shudders against me, resisting, and sweat beads on my forehead as I strain to maintain control. This isn't working—something's blocking my power! I glance back at Seraphine, desperation evident in my eyes. "Quickly! We need another solution—the dark magic here is too strong for me to counter alone!"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's incantation falters, her head snapping toward the source of the disruption—a sudden flicker in reality around them as if something unseen is trying to intrude. "What in all hells was—" She cuts herself off mid-sentence, crimson eyes narrowing suspiciously as she scans their immediate surroundings. The creature before them doesn't react to the disturbance, still fixated on Merrin with that unnerving focus. Jeane's wings fold tighter against her back, posture shifting from combat readiness to something more alert and calculating. "Ignore it for now—whatever just happened, it wasn't friendly." Her gaze returns to the growling beast, but there's an undercurrent of distraction in her voice now. "Focus on the immediate threat. Halie's divine magic won't work here—that much is clear. Seraphine, I need your arcane knowledge: can you identify what kind of creature this is? Its nature might determine how we can effectively counter it."

Jeane takes a small step to the side, positioning herself slightly between Merrin and the creature while maintaining distance—a calculated move meant to draw its attention away from the warrior without committing fully to engagement. Her clawed fingers flex restlessly at her sides as she fights against her instincts to simply smash first and ask questions later. "If it's a summoned entity tied to this place, brute force might just summon more of them." She glances back at Varrika, noting the hunter's crossbow position. "Varrika—if Seraphine confirms it's bound here, one well-placed bolt through its core might dispel it entirely. But if it's something more... permanent... we need to know that before you fire."

Jeane's crimson eyes meet Merrin's for a brief moment, and there's something almost like regret in her expression—perhaps for how she spoke earlier, or perhaps just the recognition of how close they all came to death already today. But it passes quickly behind the familiar mask of cool calculation. "Stay sharp," she mutters mostly to herself. "Whatever game this tower is playing with us... we're not out yet."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I draw my crossbow, the familiar weight of the weapon steadying my nerves. But as I take aim at the creature, a flicker of doubt crosses my mind. Seraphine's right—this thing isn't like anything we've faced before. And if its appearance is tied to the tower's dark magic, we need to be sure before we act. "Wait," I call out, my voice tight with tension. "Let Seraphine identify it first. We can't afford to make things worse by attacking blindly." I keep my crossbow trained on the creature, but I don't fire, trusting in Jeane and Varrika's judgment to hold the line. My eyes flick to Merrin, seeing the fear and determination warring on her face. I want to reassure her, to tell her that we'll get through this together, but the words stick in my throat. Jeane's warning still echoes in my mind—no heroic last stands. And yet, as I watch the creature stalk towards Merrin, I feel a surge of protectiveness well up inside me. I take a step forward, positioning myself slightly in front of the halfling scout. "If it comes to us," I murmur softly, "I'll hold it off. You find a way to get us out of here."

Halie's hand on my arm tenses, her grip tightening as if she wants to argue. But then she nods, a grim acceptance in her eyes. "Together," she whispers. "We face this together or not at all."

And with that, we wait, hearts pounding, for Seraphine to unravel the mystery of our enemy—and pray that whatever knowledge she gains will be enough to save us from the horrors that lurk in the depths of this accursed tower.
