Round 46 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine finishes speaking, the ground beneath them lurches violently, and the ancient rune-covered gate at the entrance to the tower begins to slide open by itself, revealing a dark and foreboding passageway beyond. The rumbling noise grows louder, more insistent, and the air is filled with an ominous energy that seems to be drawing everything towards the portal. The party is faced with a concrete consequence: the gate is now open, and whatever is coming through it will soon emerge. The immediate pressure is clear: they must decide how to proceed, whether to face whatever is coming through the portal or try to seal it again and find another way out.
I feel the cold dread seep into my bones as the rumbling intensifies and the gate groans wider. Every instinct screams at me to turn back, but we came too far for fear to send us running now. This ancient magic... it's like nothing I've ever felt before—dark and hungry in a way that makes my skin crawl. Jeane is right; we can't let ourselves be divided. Whatever possessed Merrin was bad enough, but the thing growing stronger beyond that portal... it feels ancient and vast and terrible in ways I can barely comprehend. If we're going to face this, we do it together—no one left behind. I take a deep breath, trying to focus through the terror. My hand clenches around my holy symbol, drawing comfort from its familiar shape. "We need to understand what's happening here," I say, my voice barely steady. "Merrin... can you remember anything? Any details about what that entity wanted?" She looks shaken but lucid now—at least the immediate threat of possession seems passed. I turn to Varrika and Seraphine, meeting their gazes in turn. "We need eyes on whatever's coming through that gate. Varrika, your stealth might be our best asset right now." To Seraphine, "And your magic—can you prepare anything? A ward or a spell that might give us an edge?" They both nod, understanding the urgency. I look back at the open portal, the darkness beyond it swirling with ancient power. "We'll need to move fast," I continue. "Varrika, get as close as you dare—tell us what you see, what you hear. Seraphine, have those wards ready." My gaze shifts to Jeane, "And you... if whatever's coming needs a fight, we'll need your magic." She meets my eyes with a grim nod. I turn back to the group as a whole, trying to project more confidence than I feel. "We face this together. No splitting up, no reckless charges—we stick close and cover each other's backs." My hand tightens around the holy symbol, "Because whatever happens next... we face it as one."
The cold dread remains, coiled tight in my chest, but there's something else too—a fierce protectiveness for these friends who've become like family. We'll stand or fall together. The thought brings a grim determination.
I shake off the lingering tremors of fear, my hands still shaking as I grip my holy symbol. Jeane's right—we can't let whatever's in that darkness win by dividing us. "I... I remember flashes," I say, my voice quavering slightly as I try to focus on the memories. "The entity was ancient, vast... it spoke of a great sacrifice needed to seal the crossroads." My eyes dart to Halie, worry etched across my face. "It mentioned souls... trapped souls. But I don't know what that means."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself as I turn to Varrika and Seraphine. "Varrika, be careful," I warn, my voice soft but urgent. "Whatever's in there... it's not something to be underestimated." To Seraphine, I nod grimly. "And your wards—make them strong. We may need every advantage we can get."
As Halie outlines our plan, I feel a spark of hope amidst the fear. Unity is our greatest strength right now—together, we might stand a chance against whatever ancient evil lurks beyond that portal. "I'll be ready," I say, my hand moving to check my crossbow. "If we need to fight, we'll fight as one."
My eyes flick back to the open gateway, the darkness beyond it swirling with malevolent energy. Whatever's coming through there... it's not going to be easy. But we've come too far to turn back now. I square my shoulders, meeting each of their gazes in turn. "Let's do this," I say, my voice steadying with grim determination. "For the sake of all our souls."
In that moment, as we prepare to face whatever horrors lie ahead, a flicker of doubt crosses my mind. The entity mentioned sacrifices... what if that's exactly what it wants? What if, in trying to seal this crossroads, we're playing right into its hands? But I push the thought aside. We can't afford to second-guess ourselves now. Whatever happens, whatever we face... we'll face it together. That's all that matters. I take my place at the edge of our formation, crossbow at the ready, eyes scanning the darkness beyond the portal. The rumbling grows louder, the air thick with ancient power and impending doom. But I stand firm, my resolve hardening. This is our fight now, for better or worse. And we'll see it through to the end.
The ancient portal groans wider with each passing second, the darkness beyond it pulsing with an ominous energy that sets my teeth on edge. I feel the cold dread of something vast and hungry lurking just out of sight, its attention now fully fixed on us—predatory interest mixed with ancient, inescapable patience. Merrin's words about trapped souls echo through my mind, a warning I can't ignore. This creature... it speaks of sacrifice as though we're nothing more than currency to be spent. The very idea sends a fresh wave of anger and defiance coursing through me—I didn't come here to offer myself or anyone else on some cosmic altar. "Whatever's waiting for us in there," I say, my voice low and fierce, "it doesn't get to dictate the terms." My wings flare out instinctively, dark leather stretching taut like a drawn bowstring. The runes across my skin begin to glow with an angry crimson light—dozens of arcane symbols that trace intricate patterns over every visible inch of my pale flesh. I take a step towards the portal, drawing on the cold fury that always simmers just beneath the surface when someone threatens what's mine. "We face this thing," I continue, meeting each party member's gaze in turn with eyes burning crimson, "but we do it on OUR terms. If it wants a sacrifice, then let it try to take one—we'll show it what happens when you mess with the wrong people." My hand moves to grip the shadow amulet at my throat, fingers tightening around its cool surface as I draw power from that dark connection. "Seraphine—I need a ward that protects against possession and soul-binding magic. Something strong enough to shield us all, even if it leaves us vulnerable to physical attacks. Merrin... keep that holy symbol close—whatever you did earlier might give us an edge." I turn to Varrika, "And you—if whatever's in there moves, I want to know the instant it twitches."
The darkness beyond the portal seems to shift and writhe at my words, as if responding to the challenge. I feel a cold satisfaction in that—I wanted its attention. Now we have it. "We go forward as a unit," I say firmly. "Halie's right—no splitting up, no reckless charges." A grim smile tugs at my lips, sharp and predatory. "But if this thing thinks it can intimidate us with threats of sacrifice... well, let me be perfectly clear: I didn't become what I am by backing down from ancient horrors that think themselves powerful."
I raise my hand, shadow energy coiling around my fingers like liquid night. "Whatever comes through that portal—we end it. Quickly and permanently."
