The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

The air in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. grows thick and heavy as Halie's defiant words hang in the air. Merrin feels the weight of Seraphine's sacrifice on her shoulders, the unspoken understanding that she is the one they all hope to protect. But Halie is right—this is no way to achieve their goals. The cost is too high, the price too steep. Merrin steps forward, her hand on the hilt of her dagger, the cold metal a comforting weight against her palm. "I appreciate the offer, Seraphine," she says, her voice steady despite the fear that twists in her gut. "But I won't let you sacrifice yourself for me." She turns to Halie, a wry smile twisting her lips. "And I'm not going to be anyone's martyr either, no matter how noble the cause."

She looks at each of her companions in turn—Jeane, her face set with grim determination; Varrika, her crossbow trained on the creature; Seraphine, her staff held high as she faces down the beast. They are a strange group, united by fate and desperation, but bound together by something deeper too—a shared purpose, a common goal. "We came here for a reason," Merrin says, her voice ringing with conviction. "And we're not leaving until we find what we're looking for." She takes a deep breath, the air cold and heavy in her lungs. "This thing wants to keep us out. It sees us as trespassers, as threats. But we're not going to back down."

She steps forward, placing herself between the creature and her companions. Her heart hammers against her ribs, but she forces her voice to remain steady. "Halie, I need you to keep that shield up. Jeane, Varrika—be ready to attack if this thing moves." She turns to Seraphine, her expression grim. "And you... whatever magic you're preparing, make it count."

The creature looms before them, its eyes burning with ancient power. Merrin feels the weight of its gaze like a physical force, pressing down on her shoulders, threatening to crush her under its malevolent scrutiny. But she will not back down. She will not let this thing win. "We are not enemies," she says, her voice ringing out in the stillness of the chamber. "We come in peace, seeking only what lies beyond your gate." Her hand tightens on her dagger, the metal cool and familiar against her palm. "But if you stand in our way, we will fight you. And we will win."

The creature growls, a low, menacing sound that vibrates through the stone beneath their feet. Merrin feels the hair on the back of her neck stand up, a primal fear that twists in her gut. But she does not falter. She stands her ground, her eyes locked on the beast's crimson gaze. "Show us what you're made of," she whispers, her voice barely audible over the pounding of her own heart. "And then we'll show you what we're capable of."

And with that, Merrin steps forward, ready to face whatever comes next, her companions at her side, their fates inexorably entwined. The air crackles with tension, the ancient magic of the tower pressing in around them, and Merrin knows that whatever happens now, it will change them all forever.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's crimson eyes bore into Merrin. You foolish girl—this isn't about nobility. This is survival. She steps forward, her voice cold and measured. You don't understand what we're dealing with here. That thing? It's not some simple beast. It's a guardian spirit bound to this place by ancient magic. Her gaze sweeps the group, lingering on Halie's defiant stance. Your morals are admirable, priestess, but misplaced. We didn't come here to make friends—we came for that sword. She gestures toward Merrin with a dismissive wave of her hand. And if this guardian spirit thinks it can use one of us as leverage, we let it try. It's them or us. Jeane turns back to the looming creature, her dark energy swirling around her fingertips like living shadows. Seraphine suggested a sacrifice, yes—because that's how these old rituals work. One life for passage. And while I don't relish the thought of any of us dying... her eyes lock onto Merrin's ...if it has to be one of us, why not the one we're here to protect in the first place? The runes on the gate pulse ominously behind them. Time is running out. That thing isn't going to wait for us to debate ethics while our supplies dwindle and the tower's magic grows stronger. She raises her hand, dark energy crackling between her fingers. I say we make the deal—one of us stays, the rest go through. And Merrin? She stays behind. Jeane's voice drops to a dangerous purr as she faces the creature again. Don't get me wrong—I'm not suggesting this because I want you dead. Far from it. But you're the key to all this, aren't you? The prophecy, the vision—everything points to you. And if that means we use you as a bargaining chip... she shrugs coldly ...well, isn't that what heroes are for? She turns back to her companions, her expression hard. So here's where we stand: Merrin stays or we all stay—and likely die trying to force our way through. Or Merrin makes the sacrifice, we go on, and hopefully find a way to get you both out before whatever dark entity takes up residence in that void fully materializes. Her eyes flash with barely contained impatience. Which is it going to be? Because I'd rather make this choice now than have that thing decide for us. Jeane's wings shift restlessly, as if eager for flight or battle—it's hard to tell which. Think fast. That creature isn't getting any less hungry, and I doubt its patience extends much longer.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

Seraphine's gaze snaps wide, her heart hammering against her ribs as she stares at Merrin, then back at Jeane. The air in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. grows thick and heavy with tension, each person's breath a ghostly echo in the silence.
She sees the logic in Jeane's words, the cold, ruthless efficiency of them. One life for passage—a ritual as old as magic itself. It makes a terrible kind of sense. But to sacrifice Merrin? The very reason they’re here? The thought chills her to the bone.
Seraphine turns to Merrin, her expression a mixture of apology and grim resignation. "Merrin..." she begins, her voice so soft it's almost lost in the air, the words a knife in her own throat. "Jeane has a point. This isn't just about us anymore. It's about what we came to do." Her eyes flicker towards the guardian spirit, its crimson gaze still fixed upon them, a silent demand hanging between them.
She takes a slow, deliberate step back, away from Merrin and closer to Halie. The cleric's presence is a steadying force beside her, a reminder of the goodness they're supposed to be fighting for. "But I can't... I won't be a part of this." Her voice gains strength, becoming more firm. She raises her staff, the crystal tip glowing with a faint, pulsing light. "There has to be another way. A different solution."
The runes on the gate pulse ominously, seeming to echo the urgency in Seraphine's words. She looks at each of her companions in turn—Jeane, coldly pragmatic; Varrika, her crossbow trained but her eyes uncertain; Merrin, her face a mask of stoic acceptance. "We came here together. We face this together. All of us." Her voice rises, echoing off the stone walls, a defiant declaration. "If we give in to this darkness now, what does that make us? What have we been fighting for if not our own freedom?"
She turns back to the creature, her staff held high, ready to unleash whatever spell she can muster. "You want a sacrifice? You'll get one. But it won't be Merrin." The air crackles with power as Seraphine calls upon her magic, the crystal on her staff flaring brighter, hotter. "It will be me. I'll stay. I'll become the key to your gate. And you... " she gestures to Merrin with a jerk of her head "... you get to go through and find what we came for."
Her eyes meet Merrin's, a silent apology passing between them. "This is my choice. Mine alone." She takes another step forward, placing herself directly in front of the guardian spirit, its malevolent presence washing over her like a physical wave. "So take me. Take my power, my life force, whatever it is you think you need to let the others pass. But know this—whatever happens next, I won't be afraid. Not for myself, and not for what we do when we get out of here."
The runes on the gate begin to shift, their ancient patterns twisting into new, more complex designs. Seraphine feels a deep, resonant hum vibrate through her bones, a prelude to something terrible and wondrous. "Be ready," she calls over her shoulder to her companions, her voice strained with effort as she prepares to channel the massive surge of energy now building at her command. "This is going to hurt."
