As Merrin steps forward into the darkness, the growling from within grows louder, more insistent. The runes on the gate begin to shift and rearrange themselves, forming a new pattern that seems to pulse with an otherworldly energy. Suddenly, the air is filled with the acrid stench of decay, and a faint mist begins to seep from the cracks in the ground. The mist swirls around Merrin's feet, making it difficult to see, but as it clears, a pair of glowing eyes appear before her, watching with unnerving intensity. The party must decide how to proceed next: do they try to push forward through the mist, or do they retreat back to the safety of their own side of the gate?

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

As I reach out with my spellcraft, the runes on the gate flare brilliantly for a moment before returning to their ominous pulsing.

"It reacted," I mutter. "Whatever's in there is definitely watching us through these symbols. We can't let our guard down."

The mist swirls thicker around Merrin's feet now, and I catch another glimpse of those glowing eyes—this time closer than before. "Merrin, step back slowly," I warn. "We don't know what this mist might be doing to you."

I turn to Seraphine and Halie, my expression serious. "This isn't just a physical barrier. There's an intelligence here, something ancient and hungry. We need to approach this carefully or we could end up feeding whatever's lurking beyond that gate."

The runes continue their unsettling dance, each symbol seeming to pulse with its own dark energy. "I think I can disrupt the pattern," I say, my fingers still tingling with arcane power. "But if I'm wrong, it might alert whatever's inside. We need a plan—who goes in first and how do we handle whatever emerges?"

Despite the growing unease, there's an undercurrent of excitement running through me. This is real magic, primal and dangerous—the kind of challenge that separates the truly powerful from mere adventurers.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I take a step back from the gate, my eyes still fixed on those unsettling runes. The air crackles with an ancient, malevolent power that makes my skin crawl. Merrin's warning about the mist is well-founded—the strange vapors seem to cling to her form, swirling around her legs like a ghostly fog.
As Jeane mentions disrupting the pattern, I nod slowly. Her assessment of the situation is spot-on—this isn’t just a physical barrier, but a magical one imbued with an intelligence that feels both predatory and cunning.
"I agree," I say, my voice a low murmur meant only for our inner circle. "The runes are more than just locks—they're a system of detection, a way for whatever's inside to gauge our strength and intent. Disrupting them could be dangerous, but it might also be our best chance at getting through without alerting... whatever is waiting there."
I turn my attention to the mist swirling around Merrin’s feet. The glowing eyes within it seem to be fixed on her specifically, a chilling realization that sends a jolt of fear through me.
"Merrin, be careful," I call out, my tone urgent. "That mist... I don’t think it’s just a byproduct of the gate. It feels... alive."
My mind races as I consider our options. This is no ordinary dungeon delve—this is a test of will, of power, and perhaps even of our souls. We need to approach this with all the knowledge and skill we can muster, but also with a healthy dose of caution.
I look at Halie, seeing the fear in her eyes battling with her unwavering faith. "Halie," I say softly, "your prayers might be our best defense against whatever dark magic is at work here. Can you feel any trace of your goddess's presence? It could give us a clue about how to proceed."
Then I turn to Varrika, who looks ready for anything with her mace held at the ready. "Varrika, prepare yourself for anything that might come through. And Merrin—step back from the mist. Let Jeane work on those runes, but be prepared to act fast if something emerges."
The runes continue their unsettling dance, each symbol seeming to pulse with its own dark energy. The air grows thicker, heavier, as if the very atmosphere is pressing down upon us. Whatever lies beyond that gate isn’t just waiting—it’s watching. And we have no choice but to face it head-on.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I take a quick step back from the mist, feeling it cling to my legs like a ghostly fog. Those glowing eyes bore into me with an unsettling intensity, as if they're trying to look straight into my soul. The runes on the gate pulse and shift, their ancient magic raising every hair on my body. I watch Jeane reach out with her spellcraft, the runes flaring brightly in response. She's right—whatever's in there is definitely watching us through those symbols. We can't let our guard down for a second or we could end up feeding whatever's lurking beyond that gate. Seraphine and Halie are right to be worried. This isn't just a physical barrier—it's a test of strength, power... and something darker still. We need to approach this carefully or we could end up in over our heads fast. I keep my hand on my dagger, ready for anything that might come out of that corridor. Whatever this test is, it's not going to be easy. But we came this far... might as well see what we're made of. I trust my party to have my back, but in a place like this, trust can only take you so far. It's up to each of us to find our own way through whatever trials await.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I fall silent for a moment, pressing my eyes closed. The wrongness I felt before has only grown stronger now—this entire tower radiates darkness that gnaws at the edges of my faith like acid.

When I open them again, my expression is grim but determined. "Whatever this thing is," I say softly to Jeane, "it’s already tasted our magic on the other side. We can’t just force our way through—it’ll know exactly what we’re capable of."
