Narrator · Narrator

As Jeane steps forward, her crimson eyes gleam in the flickering torchlight, tracing intricate patterns in the air as if reading invisible sigils. The magic here is older than anything she's encountered before, and the runes on the gate pulse with an otherworldly energy. Suddenly, the growling noise from deeper within the corridor grows louder, and a pair of glowing eyes appears at the far end, watching them with an unblinking stare.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika steps forward, her hand gripping the haft of her heavy mace. She can feel the ancient magic pulsing through the air, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. "Careful, everyone," she warns, her gravel-edged voice low and serious. "This place... it's not right. The magic here—it's older than anything I've ever felt before."

She turns to Halie, seeing the nervous energy in her grip on her mace. "Halie, your prayers will be crucial here. Whatever this trial is, it seems to be about more than just physical strength or magical power—it's about our worthiness." The thought sends a chill down her spine. Worthiness? What does that even mean in a place like this?

Varrika takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what lies ahead. The air is thick with anticipation, and she can feel the weight of their combined strength as they stand at the threshold. "Whatever this test is," she says softly, "we face it together. And may whatever gods or ancestors look upon us favor our cause—and our curiosity."

With that, Varrika steps forward into the darkness, her mace at the ready, prepared to face whatever challenges await them within the heart of this ancient tower.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step closer to the gate, my eyes narrowed as I focus on the shifting runes. The air crackles with ancient power, and I can feel it humming against my skin like a thousand tiny needles. This isn't just some ordinary magical barrier—this is something far older, far more complex. The growling from within grows louder, and I see those glowing eyes watching us from the darkness. Whatever lies beyond that threshold, it's aware of our presence now. And it's hungry.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the ancient magic humming through the air, a low vibration that seems to resonate deep within my bones. The runes on the gate pulse with an eerie light, shifting and twisting into complex patterns that defy easy understanding.
"This is no mere lock," I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else. "It's a test of will, of power... and perhaps of something far darker."
My eyes narrow as I study the glowing eyes in the darkness of the corridor. They're watching us with an intelligence that chills me to the core. This is no mindless beast—whatever lies beyond this gate is aware, and it's waiting.
"I can feel it," I say, my voice dropping to a near whisper. "There’s an energy here... old and powerful, but also twisted. Corrupted."
I raise my staff, the runes along its length flaring with a soft blue light as I channel my own magic. It's a simple spell of detection, designed to uncover hidden threats or traps. But as I cast it, I feel the ancient power push back against me, a tangible force that makes my teeth ache.
"The runes... they're not just wards. They're a language," I continue, my brow furrowing in concentration. "A challenge. And whoever—or whatever—is on the other side, it wants to see what we're made of before it lets us pass."
I turn to Jeane, seeing the excitement in her eyes. She's right—this place is different from anything we've faced before. The magic here is older, more primal, and far more dangerous.
"Jeane, your knowledge of ancient magic could be invaluable here," I say, my voice taking on a note of command. "Seraphine and I will work together to unravel the runes, while you three handle whatever comes out of that corridor."
Taking a deep breath, I steel myself for what lies ahead. The air is thick with anticipation, and I can feel the weight of our combined strength as we stand at the threshold.
"Whatever this test is," I say softly, "we face it together. And may whatever gods or ancestors look upon us favor our cause—and our curiosity."
With that, I step forward into the darkness, my staff held high, ready to meet whatever challenges await us within the heart of this ancient tower.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes narrow as she studies the dark corridor ahead. The ancient magic pulses through the air, making her skin crawl. "Careful everyone," she warns, her voice tense with barely concealed nerves. "This place... it's not right. I can feel eyes on us in the darkness."

She turns to Halie, seeing the nervous energy in her grip on her mace. "Halie, your faith will be crucial here. Whatever this trial is, it seems to be about more than just strength or skill—it's about our worthiness."

With that, Merrin steps forward into the darkness, her hand on her dagger, ready for anything that might emerge from the shadows. She trusts her party to have her back, but in a place like this, trust can only take you so far. It's up to each of them to find their own way through whatever trials await.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step closer to Varrika, my hand brushing her arm lightly. The magic here feels wrong—like a sickness in the air. I can barely keep my teeth from chattering. "I don't like this," I say, my voice low. "The gods themselves seem... distant here. Faded." The ancient runes on the gate pulse with each beat of my heart, and I feel that wrongness seep into my bones. This isn't just magic—it's something older, deeper. Something that twists the very fabric of faith. I pull out my holy symbol, tracing its edges with trembling fingers. "We need to be careful here. Whatever this test is, it clearly has teeth." The growling from within grows louder, more insistent, and I feel a wave of nausea roll through me. Something in that darkness wants us inside. And whatever it is... it doesn't want us leaving. I look at Jeane, then Merrin, then Seraphine—each of them wearing the same mix of determination and fear that I am. "We face this together. But remember—our strength comes from working as one, not rushing headlong into darkness." My eyes return to the gate, the shifting runes drawing me in despite my better judgment.* "Let's think this through before we act rashly. Sometimes prayer is more powerful than a mace... or a spell."

I start to mutter a low invocation under my breath, feeling for the presence of my goddess in this place of shadow. But the void answers with silence. My heart sinks—I've never felt so alone in my faith before.
