Round 26

Phase: escalating

The air around them shifted, grew heavy with an ancient, hungry energy that made even the most stalwart among them uneasy. The runes on the gate pulsed with a life of their own, rearranging themselves into complex patterns that seemed to dance just out of true understanding. Seraphine stepped forward, her eyes alight with scholarly curiosity and barely contained excitement, but Jeane's warning cut through the moment like a blade.
"Wait," the succubus hissed, her wings half-unfurling in agitation. "Those aren't just runes—they're forming a complex spell matrix." Her crimson gaze locked onto Seraphine, a clear note of concern in her voice despite the usual purr. "The runes might be reactive—the moment you start altering them or probing too deeply could trigger whatever's waiting beyond."
Merrin felt her stomach drop. The sorcerer's excitement was understandable—ancient magical traps were fascinating—but the potential consequences of fucking with unknown arcane defenses were far less appealing. She kept her mouth shut for once, letting the experts handle the spellcraft while she stayed ready to spring into action or run like hell depending on which way the wind blew.
Varrika's hand tightened on her mace, the dwarf warrior's instincts screaming at her to smash first and ask questions later. But they'd come too far to get themselves killed by poking a magical hornet's nest with arcane curiosity. "Careful, Archmage," she growled, her voice a low rumble. "We don't know what we're dealing with here. Could be a trap."
Halie pulled back from the gate, rubbing her palms on her cloak as if to wipe away the lingering sensation of malevolent intent. The runes weren't just symbols anymore—they were breathing, pulsing with a dark energy that seemed to seep into the stone itself. "Wait," she said sharply, cutting off Varrika's countdown before it reached three. The growing malevolence beyond the gate was shifting, becoming more... deliberate. Something ancient was waking up.
Seraphine paused mid-step, her excitement tempered by the collective unease radiating from the party. She glanced at Jeane, then back to the runes, her brow furrowing in concentration. "I don't think it's a simple trap," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "These patterns... they're not defensive—they're like a lock or a test." Her fingers twitched, as if resisting the urge to reach out and touch them.
