As the silence stretches out, a low, menacing growl begins to build from beyond the gate. It's a sound that sends a shiver down Varrika's spine, and she readies her mace with a practiced grip. The air seems to vibrate with tension, as if the very fabric of reality is straining to contain whatever horrors lie beyond. Suddenly, the gate's runes begin to pulse with an otherworldly energy, and the air erupts into a swirling vortex of dark smoke. The growling grows louder, more urgent, and Merrin's eyes widen in alarm as she stumbles back from the gate. "It's opening!" she cries, her voice barely audible over the rising din. The party is faced with a decision: do they press forward into the unknown, or do they retreat and try to find another way around the Tower? The growling grows louder, more insistent, and the darkness beyond the gate seems to be closing in.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's crimson eyes narrow as the ancient symbols on the gate begin to pulse ominously. The low growl from beyond is no longer just an auditory warning—it vibrates through her very being, setting her teeth on edge. "Wait!" She hisses, stepping forward with surprising speed for someone of her voluptuous frame. Her dark wings half-unfurl in agitation, catching the eerie blue-green light from the gate symbols. We don't know what's beyond that threshold yet! Halie—can you sense anything? Is this entity still responding to us?"

Her gaze sweeps across each companion's face in turn, lingering on Merrin with particular intensity. Whatever happens next, we move as one. No charging ahead without signal. She raises her hands slightly, dark energy already beginning to swirl between her fingertips. I can maintain the barrier long enough for a careful advance or withdrawal—depending on what we find—but if those wards come down fully and we're facing whatever made this tower... Jeane's voice drops to a dangerous purr. ...then our combined strength is all that stands between us and oblivion. Understood?

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I feel my heart pounding in my chest as the gate's symbols pulse and growl. My hand tightens on my mace, muscles coiled and ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. Jeane's warning about moving as one rings in my ears. "Right behind you," I mutter, my eyes darting between the sorcerer and the gate. "But if something comes through that we can't handle, I'm not waiting for permission to start swinging."

My gaze flicks to Halie, a blend of concern and apprehension in my eyes. "Halie—any last words before we do this? Any final prayers or blessings we should have?" I know the cleric's faith is strong, but even she looks uneasy in the face of whatever's about to emerge from that ancient gate.

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever horrors might be lurking beyond. The air is thick with tension, and I can feel the weight of our combined strength as we stand at the threshold. "Whatever happens," I say softly, more to myself than anyone else, "we face this together. And may the ancestors have mercy on anything that tries to stop us."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up as the gate's runes begin to pulse with otherworldly energy. My grip tightens on my mace, muscles coiled and ready for whatever horrors may emerge. "Stay sharp, everyone," I mutter, my eyes scanning the swirling darkness beyond the threshold. "If anything comes through that we can't handle, we fall back in good order."

My gaze sweeps across each of my companions, settling briefly on Merrin. "No heroics," I say firmly, knowing full well the rogue's impulsive nature. "We stand together or not at all."

Turning to Halie, I nod towards the gate. "Any last words before we do this? Any blessings or prayers that might help see us through?" I know our cleric's faith is strong, but even she looks uneasy in the face of whatever's about to emerge from those ancient wards.

Taking a deep breath, I steel myself for the confrontation ahead. The air is thick with tension, and I can feel the weight of our combined strength as we stand at the threshold. "Whatever happens," I say softly, more to myself than anyone else, "we face this together. And may whatever gods or ancestors look upon us favor our cause."

With that, I step forward, my mace at the ready and my eyes fixed on the pulsing symbols of the gate. The growling from beyond grows louder, more insistent, and I can feel a primal fear rising within me—a fear of the unknown, of the dark magic that has sealed this tower for so long. "On three," I say, my voice low and steady. "One... two..."

And as I raise my mace to strike the final blow against the gate, I can only pray that our combined strength will be enough to face whatever horrors lie beyond.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step back from the gate, my hand falling away from the pulsing symbols. The sudden silence is more unnerving than any growl could be—it feels like we're being watched by something ancient and patient. "Jeane's right," I say softly, my voice barely carrying over the rising tension. "We shouldn't rush into this blindly." My eyes scan the runes, searching for patterns or weaknesses. "The wards aren't breaking down—they're... responding to us. Testing us."

I turn to face Merrin and Varrika, my expression serious. "If whatever's beyond that gate wants to test our worthiness, then breaking it down with brute force might be exactly what it wants." My fingers trace the silver cross around my neck absently. "We need information first. I can try to... communicate. Negotiate. Find out what the price is for entry."

I take a deep breath, steeling myself. "But if something emerges that we can't handle—something that isn't just a test but an actual threat—then we fall back as one." My eyes meet each companion's in turn. "We stand together or not at all. And may the Goddess of Light guide us through this darkness."

Before anyone can argue, I step forward again, placing both hands on the gate symbols. They pulse beneath my touch, cold and ancient. "Great spirit of this tower," I begin, my voice echoing slightly in the still air. "We seek only to pass. Tell us the price of entry, so that we may decide with clear eyes."
