The ground rumbled again, more violently this time. Something shifted deep within the stone, and a cold wind whipped through the clearing around them. The guardian’s voice spoke once more, softer but no less menacing. “You seek the Time-Splitting Sword, but are you prepared for the trials that lie ahead?” The runes on the gate pulsed once more, casting flickering shadows across their faces.

Merrin felt her stomach twist with apprehension as she watched Halie’s aura pulse in sync with the gate magic. This wasn’t some mindless undead—this thing had intelligence, hunger, purpose. She backed away slowly, eyes darting between the glowing symbols and Jeane’s frustrated attempts to cast without her usual tools. Seraphine stood motionless, deep in scrying concentration, while Varrika scanned the treacherous woods for movement.

Jeane growled under her breath as her spell components failed to materialize. “Great timing,” she muttered, gripping her staff tighter. This was exactly why she preferred working with proper equipment—now they were...

“Wait,” Halie said softly, holding up a hand to pause Merrin’s eagerness and Jeane’s spellwork. “The guardian speaks not only to us but through this entire place. It wants... something more than simple passage.” The air around the gate seemed to thicken with anticipation.

Varrika stepped forward, her voice low and urgent. “Alright, listen up. We’ve got two problems here—whatever’s behind this gate, and whatever’s coming towards us from the woods.” She glanced at Halie, then back to the group. “Halie—you keep trying to communicate with the guardian, but be careful. We don’t know what it might do if you lose control of your connection.”

Seraphine nodded slowly, her keen eyes fixed on Halie’s glowing aura. “I agree. The magic here is... ancient and hungry. We should proceed with extreme caution.” She turned to Jeane. “Can you help me maintain a protective barrier around Halie? Just in case?”

Jeane hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah, I can do that. But without my tools, it’ll take more concentration than usual.” She began weaving a silent spell, her fingers tracing intricate patterns as she focused on maintaining a shield of magical energy around their cleric.

Merrin glanced between the gate and the approaching growls from the woods, her mind racing with possibilities. Should they press forward into the unknown dangers of the tower? Or should they deal with whatever was stalking them in the Whispering Woods first?

The guardian’s voice spoke again, softer this time but no less menacing. “You seek the Time-Splitting Sword, but are you prepared for the trials that lie ahead?” The runes on the gate pulsed once more, casting flickering shadows across their faces.

Varrika cursed under her breath as the growling grew louder. “Whatever it is, it’s getting closer fast. We need to make a decision—tower or woods?”

Halie closed her eyes, her voice barely above a whisper as she addressed the guardian directly. “We come not to profane your sacred place but to right ancient wrongs. Guide us if you will, but know that we seek only to restore balance, not to disturb your eternal rest.”

The ground rumbled again, more violently this time. Something shifted deep within the stone, and a cold wind whipped through the clearing around them.

Seraphine’s eyes widened as she felt a sudden surge of dark energy. “Something’s changing! The barrier—it’s not holding!”

Jeane redoubled her efforts, sweat beading on her forehead as she poured more power into the shield spell. “I’ve got it! Just... hold still for a moment.”

Merrin drew her crossbow, loading a bolt with quick, practiced movements. “Alright, if something’s coming through that gate, we need to be ready. Form up!”

Varrika moved to stand beside Halie, mace at the ready. “Stay behind me. If anything gets past Jeane’s barrier, I’ll hold it off long enough for you to cast something useful.”

Halie nodded gratefully, her hands raised in a defensive posture as she began chanting a prayer for protection.

The growling from beyond the woods was almost upon them now, accompanied by the sound of heavy footsteps crushing underbrush. Whatever it was, it sounded big—and fast.

Seraphine’s voice trembled slightly as she maintained the barrier spell. “Hurry, Jeane! I don’t know how much longer I can—”

A massive shadow loomed over the gate, and with a deafening roar, something huge and dark burst through the stone barrier as if it were made of paper.

Jeane’s shield spell shattered, the backlash sending her stumbling backward. “Shit!”

Merrin fired her crossbow instinctively, the bolt sailing past Varrika’s shoulder and embedding itself in the creature’s chest with a sickening thud. It barely seemed to notice, its eyes blazing with malevolent intent as it charged forward.

Varrika roared a battle cry and met the creature head-on, her mace swinging in a powerful arc that should have crushed bone—but the beast barely flinched, swatting her aside like an insect with one massive paw.

Halie screamed as Varrika crashed to the ground, her concentration broken. The guardian’s voice boomed through the air once more, filled with triumphant malice. “Fools! You have awakened me from my slumber, and now you will pay the price for your arrogance!”

The creature loomed over them now, its form shifting and changing in the flickering light of the gate symbols—part beast, part shadow, part something else entirely that defied rational description. Its hunger was palpable, a physical force that made their skin crawl.

Seraphine stumbled back, her eyes wide with terror. “We need to run! That thing—it’s not natural!”

Jeane regained her footing, staff raised defensively as she tried to think of any spell that might help against such a monstrosity. “Everyone, fall back! We can’t fight this alone!”

Merrin fired another crossbow bolt, then a third, each one seeming to do little more than annoy the creature. She cursed and began backing away slowly, scanning for any escape route.

Varrika pushed herself up off the ground, her armor dented and bruised but her spirit unbroken. “Not on your life!” she snarled, charging back at the beast with renewed fury.

Halie, seeing Varrika’s bravery, found a spark of courage within herself. She raised her holy symbol high, the white light intensifying as she began a prayer to her goddess for protection and strength.

The creature roared again, its attention now split between the retreating members of the party and Varrika’s fierce assault. It lashed out with another swat of its massive paw, this time catching Halie squarely in the chest and sending her flying backward into the stone wall of the tower with a sickening crack.

Jeane screamed as she saw Halie hit the ground unconscious, her holy symbol clattering away into the darkness beyond the gate. “Halie!”

The creature turned back to them, its eyes burning with renewed hunger now that it had tasted blood. It lunged forward, jaws gaping wide to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth.

Seraphine, seeing no other option, began chanting a spell of her own—one designed to banish creatures from the material plane. It was their last hope, and she poured every ounce of her arcane power into the incantation.

Merrin fired one last desperate shot before turning and running for cover in the woods, her heart pounding with fear and regret. She knew they had made a terrible mistake, and now they might all pay for it with their lives.

Varrika, seeing the creature about to descend on Seraphine as she cast her spell, let out a battle cry and threw herself between them once more. Her mace struck home this time, dealing a blow that actually seemed to hurt the beast—but its retaliation was swift and brutal, massive jaws clamping down on her shoulder with enough force to shatter bone.

Jeane watched in horror as Varrika’s scream of pain filled the air, then cut off abruptly as the creature shook her like a toy before tossing her aside. The dwarf warrior hit the ground hard, not moving.

The banishment spell flared to life around Seraphine, arcane runes swirling in a vortex that enveloped the beast. For a moment, it roared and thrashed against the magical bonds, then with a final shriek of defiance, it began to fade—vanishing from their world in a shower of dark energy that left the air tasting of ozone and decay.

Silence fell over the clearing, broken only by the labored breathing of the surviving party members and the faint groaning of Varrika on the ground. Jeane rushed to Halie’s side, checking her pulse and wounds with trembling hands while Merrin emerged cautiously from the woods, her face pale with shock.

Seraphine stood there panting, her magical energies depleted but a look of grim satisfaction on her face. “It’s gone... at least for now.”

Merrin knelt beside Varrika, tears streaming down her cheeks as she tried to staunch the flow of blood from the massive wound on her shoulder. “Varrika! Varrika, can you hear me?”

The dwarf warrior’s eyes fluttered open, her voice weak but still defiant. “I... I’m fine. Just a scratch.”

Jeane looked up from checking Halie, her expression grim. “Halie’s unconscious but alive. She’s got a nasty concussion and some broken ribs, but she’ll heal. Varrika... we need to get that shoulder treated immediately or she might lose the arm.”

Seraphine nodded, already moving to help Merrin with the injured dwarf. “We need to find shelter—fast. That creature might not stay banished for long.”

Merrin glanced around nervously, her rogue’s instincts screaming at her to run. “The woods aren’t safe either. Whatever was growling before... I didn’t see it, but something big and fast is still out there.”

Jeane stood, staff at the ready as she scanned their surroundings. “Then we need to decide—tower or woods? Because either way, we’re in deep shit right now.”
