Phase: escalating

Halie's hand recoiled from the gate as if scalded, her blue-grey eyes wide with shock and growing horror. The symbols etched into the ancient stone had flared to life beneath her touch, pulsing with a sickly greenish light that seemed to draw strength from her very faith. But instead of revelation or guidance, the stone answered her contact with a low, ominous growl that rumbled up through the ground itself, making the very air vibrate with malevolence.
"Stop!" The word tore from her lips before she could stop it, a strangled cry of alarm that cut through the heavy silence. She stumbled back, clutching her small silver cross as if it could shield her from whatever ancient power now animated the barrier before them. Her face had gone pale, all traces of earlier confidence replaced by naked terror.
Seraphine stepped forward immediately, her sharp eyes narrowing as she studied the pulsating symbols. The wizard's staff was already half-raised, a defensive posture that spoke of long-practiced caution. "Wait," she commanded, her voice tight with controlled urgency. "Something is... wrong here." The air around them seemed to crackle with dark energy, and Seraphine felt a cold dread settle into her very bones. This was no simple guardian spirit they'd banished—this was something ancient, powerful, and now actively hostile.
Merrin whirled at the sound of Halie's cry, her hand instinctively going for a dagger that wasn't there (her crossbow already loaded and ready). But as she watched the symbols pulse with increasing intensity, her quick mind began piecing together the implications. "You might be onto something," she said slowly, turning to Seraphine with a sharp nod. The halfling's dark eyes darted back to the gate, studying it with the keen gaze of someone who'd made her living by noticing details others missed.
"Perhaps force isn't the answer here," Merrin continued, her voice low and thoughtful. "If this gate is... alive, in some sense..." She trailed off, leaving the horrifying implications hanging in the air between them all.
Jeane moved forward with predatory grace, her dark leathery wings half-spread in a posture of controlled tension that spoke of readiness without panic. Her crimson eyes glowed faintly as she studied the pulsating symbols, the very air around them seeming to thicken with dark energy. This was no mere barrier—the stone itself seemed to be alive, or at least animated by some ancient and terrible power.
"You might be right," Jeane said softly, addressing Seraphine directly while keeping her gaze fixed on the gate. "But we need to understand what we're dealing with before we can hope to bypass it." The succubus's voluptuous form tensed slightly as another rumble shook the ground, her supernatural senses clearly picking up something beyond human perception.
The five women stood in tense silence for long moments, the air around them alive with palpable wrongness. Whatever ancient entity had been bound here... whatever dark purpose this tower served... they'd just woken it up. And now, they needed to decide whether to press forward into the unknown horrors within, or retreat while they still could.
The heavy stone gate loomed before them, its symbols pulsing with hungry light, as the very air seemed to thicken with anticipation. A decision hung in the balance—a choice between potential glory and certain death. The tower's dark magic pulsed around them, waiting for their next move.
