Phase: converging

The air grew thick with malevolence as shadows coalesced into a writhing mass at the far end of the corridor. Halie stumbled backward, her holy symbol clutched tightly in both hands, the silver surface beginning to glow with an unearthly light that pushed back against the encroaching darkness. "Stay close!" she called out, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her veins. The entity lunged forward, tendrils of pure shadow reaching for them, but Halie's mace swung in a wide arc, clearing the corridor and buying them precious seconds to react.
Merrin's hand instinctively went for her crossbow, but something held her back—a nagging feeling that this creature was more than just another undead horror. Her rogue instincts screamed at her to attack, but years of experience had taught her when to trust her gut. This thing... it felt wrong in a way no ordinary monster did.
Jeane raised her hand, arcane energies swirling around her fingertips, but she didn't yet cast a spell. The creature's form was shifting, solidifying into something more defined—a mass of writhing shadows with faces trapped within its substance. Her crimson eyes widened as understanding dawned. "Its form... it's not just darkness," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "There are people trapped inside that mass—consciousnesses absorbed and incorporated."
The revelation hit the group like a physical blow. Halie's grip on her mace tightened, the holy symbol in her other hand seeming suddenly inadequate against such ancient profanity. Merrin felt a chill settle into her bones, her fingers curling around the hilt of her dagger instead of the crossbow trigger. Seraphine's sharp eyes narrowed as she assessed the entity with her magical senses, confirming Jeane's disturbing findings.
"We don't need another mess on our hands," Halie growled, but uncertainty crept into her voice. "Fine. We’ll try your way, but understand this—I won’t hesitate if that thing threatens us directly. My faith is strong enough to handle what..."
Merrin stepped forward, cutting off Halie's words with a raised hand. "Jeane's point is crucial," she said, her voice tight with controlled concern. "This isn't just a matter of purifying evil—we're dealing with ancient magic here, and the consequences of our actions could be far-reaching." She glanced at Seraphine, silently seeking confirmation.
Seraphine nodded grimly, her elegant features set in a mask of barely contained horror. "This is exactly why I was concerned about coming here—ancient powers like these always have a cost, even if it's not immediately apparent." She turned to Halie, her voice taking on a lecturing tone despite the urgency of their situation. "Halie, your faith will be tested in more ways than one. But if we can free those souls instead of simply destroying this entity, we may yet find a way to complete our quest without adding to the profanity already present in this place."
The corridor fell silent except for the faint sound of Halie's labored breathing and the distant whispering of the wind outside. The writhing mass of shadows remained at the end, its countless trapped faces twisting in an eternal scream that none of them could hear. The weight of their decision settled over the group like a physical burden—every option seemed fraught with potential consequences neither good nor bad.
Jeane's eyes darted between her companions, weighing the risks and possibilities. Her fingers twitched, still charged with arcane energy but uncertain how to proceed. Merrin stood ready, her dagger drawn but held loosely—a compromise between Halie's aggressive stance and Seraphine's cautionary advice. Only Seraphine remained outwardly composed, though her knuckles whitened around the staff she gripped.
The tower's ancient magic pulsed through the stone again, a reminder that time was not on their side. Whatever they chose to do next, the consequences would ripple far beyond this single moment in the haunted corridor leading to an even more accursed destination above.
