As Merrin's lockpicks scrape against the mechanism inside, the air around her seems to grow colder, as if the very darkness itself is coalescing into a tangible force. The violet light of the gate pulses in time with her efforts, and for an instant, it feels like the stone itself is resisting her. Then, with a soft click, the lock releases, and the gate's massive wooden beams slide apart, creaking as they swing open. Beyond the threshold, the darkness seems to writhe and twist, like a living entity trying to reclaim its territory. A musty smell wafts out, heavy with decay and corruption. The party can feel the weight of centuries bearing down upon them, the air thick with malevolent energy. As they step forward, the gate thuds shut behind them, plunging them into an inky blackness that seems to have a life of its own.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps through the gate as it swings open, her eyes scanning the darkness beyond with a predatory intensity. The moment we cross the threshold, I feel it—the tower's presence like a weight on my skin, ancient and hungry. These wards weren't meant to keep out mere thieves; they were designed to test faith itself. Her gaze lingers on Halie for a moment, noting the way her sister's silver cross glows faintly in the gloom. Your Goddess may have chosen us, but that doesn't mean we can trust everything she sends our way. We need to move quickly and quietly—whatever lies ahead is already aware of us. To Merrin, her tone sharpens. Nice work on the lock, but don't get cocky. This is just the beginning. She turns to Seraphine, nodding approvingly at the wizard's protective wards shimmering around them. Good instincts. We'll need every edge we can get. Varrika's comment about cover makes Jeane smirk faintly. Don't worry, if something tries to eat you, I'll be sure to point and laugh… after I've dealt with it myself, of course. Her hand rests casually on the hilt of her dagger as she surveys their surroundings.

The darkness seems to press in around them, thick and suffocating. Jeane's wings twitch restlessly, sensing unseen presences moving through the shadows. Right then. We need to find the stairs up—and fast. This floor is likely crawling with… She trails off as something scuttles across her peripheral vision—a bone-white skeleton melting out of the darkness before freezing in place.

Skeletons. Typical guardian choice for a tower like this—easy enough to deal with, but tedious nonetheless. Well, that was quick, she mutters, drawing her dagger with fluid grace. At least they're predictable. To Halie and Seraphine, she adds, Keep those wards up—they might be animated by dark magic. And Merrin? Stick close to Varrika until we clear this room. I'd hate for our lockpick to get skewered before we even reach the good stuff. With a dismissive flick of her wrist, Jeane steps forward into the gloom, her eyes gleaming with crimson light that seems to draw power from the very corruption around them. Let's see what these undead relics have learned over the centuries, shall we?

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step forward into the gloom, my silver cross clutched tightly in one hand while the other grips my heavy mace. The air here feels thick with malevolent intent, like a physical weight pressing down on my shoulders. The skeletons Jeane spotted aren't just guard dogs—they're likely bound to this place by dark magic, animated by the same forces that sealed the tower. We can't afford to treat them lightly. "Wait," I say, my voice cutting through the oppressive silence. "Before we charge in…" I turn to face Seraphine and Jeane. "These skeletons—they're not just bone and sinew. The magic animating them might cling to our weapons if we strike them directly." My gaze shifts to Merrin and Varrika. "And the lockpicks could potentially… awaken something dormant in this place, given how sensitive the wards were."

I take a deep breath, feeling the corrupt aura trying to seep into my bones. I'm not usually one for caution over action, but there's a difference between boldness and foolishness. "Let me try something first—a ritual of purification might weaken or even dispel them entirely." My eyes meet Jeane's, a silent plea for patience. "I know you want to test your skills against these undead guardians, sister, but faith has its own kind of power here. Let me attempt this before we resort to more… direct methods."

I begin to trace small symbols in the air with my free hand, my lips moving in silent prayer. The silver cross in my fist begins to glow softly, casting flickering shadows that seem to push back against the oppressive darkness around us. "Guide our steps, O Light," I whisper, my voice barely audible but filled with conviction. "Bless these tools of our trade and cleanse this cursed place of its unholy inhabitants…"

As I continue the ritual, the air around us begins to shimmer faintly, as if resisting the pure magic I'm channeling.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin nods slowly at Halie's words, her eyes flickering between the glowing cross and the ominous darkness beyond. Alright, alright, you win this round, sister, she says, a wry smile tugging at her lips. I was just itching to test my blades on some undead riffraff, but if your holy mojo can send 'em packing, who am I to argue? Just try not to take all the fun away, yeah? She moves closer to Halie, keeping a wary eye on the shadows. And hey, while you're at it, maybe throw some of that purifying power my way too? I'm feeling a bit... tainted after fiddling with those wards. Merrin's voice is light, but there's an undercurrent of unease in her tone, as if she can still feel the malevolent energy clinging to her skin like oil.

As Halie begins her ritual, Merrin steps back slightly, giving her room to work but keeping close enough to react if anything goes wrong. Come on then, show us what that blessed metal of yours can do, she mutters under her breath, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her dagger. Let's see if we can't give these dusty bones a one-way trip back to whatever hell they crawled out of. She glances at Jeane, a playful smirk on her face even though the atmosphere is tense. And you, sister... try not to drool too much when Halie works her miracles. Wouldn't want your fangs to rust from disuse. Merrin's tone is teasing, but there's a note of genuine respect beneath the jab. She may give Jeane a hard time, but she knows better than most how valuable those demonic abilities can be in a pinch.

Her eyes dart back to the shadows, watching for any sign of movement. Come on then, you clacking horde... show yourselves and let's see if we can't dance this darkness away. Merrin's voice is low, almost taunting, as if she's daring the skeletons to reveal themselves. Just try not to get too attached, yeah? I hear the afterlife's a bit of a letdown these days...

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Halie begin her ritual of purification, the air around us already starting to feel less oppressive as the silver light of her cross pushes back against the dark magic. She's right, of course—we need to be careful here. These aren't just mindless undead; they're bound to this place by ancient power.
Merrin's comment about taking all the fun away makes me smirk faintly. Fun isn't what we came here for—not really. We came to find that sword, and if a bit of holy light can clear our path without risking life and limb, so much the better.
"Smart thinking, Halie," I say, my voice quiet but firm. "Let's see if your faith can give these old bones a rest day."
My gaze sweeps over the assembled party, landing briefly on Merrin. Her confidence is admirable, but it can also be... reckless. I make a mental note to keep her close, at least until we know what we're up against.
As Halie's ritual continues, I feel a faint tingling in my fingers—a sign that the ambient magic in this place is reacting to the intrusion of light. It’s not painful, exactly, just... unsettling. Like the ground shifting beneath my feet.
"Just remember," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else, "sometimes the things that look most harmless can be the most dangerous. A blade cuts cleanly, but it's the subtle poisons that eat you from the inside out."
I take a step back, giving Halie space to work while also keeping an eye on our surroundings. The darkness seems to writhe at the edges of my vision, and I have the uncanny feeling that whatever is watching us from the shadows isn't as lifeless as the skeletons we've seen so far.
My hand tightens on my staff, the crystal tip flaring with a soft blue light. The runes etched into its surface begin to glow faintly in response to the dark energy around us. It’s a good sign—my spells are still working, still responsive to the ambient magic. That means our countermeasures have some chance of succeeding here.
I turn to Jeane, seeing the predatory gleam in her eyes as she watches Halie work. "And you," I say, my tone dry, "try not to look so hungry. We're supposed to be saving the world, not devouring it."
Her chuckle is low and dangerous, sending a chill down my spine that has nothing to do with the cold air of the tower.
My attention is pulled back to Halie as she reaches the climax of her ritual. The air crackles with power, and I feel a sudden surge of energy against my wards. It’s not an attack, exactly—more like a test, a challenge from the tower itself. A silent question: are we worthy?
I stand ready, my staff held at the perfect angle to channel any backlash from my wards. We're about to find out.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I watch as Halie's ritual unfolds, the silver light of her cross pushing back against the oppressive darkness around us. It's a sight to behold, and a reminder of just how much power faith can hold in a place like this.

Merrin's jokes about taking all the fun away make me chuckle softly, but there's a sense of relief too. Let Halie handle the undead with her holy magic—it's far better than us trying to hack our way through them. And Seraphine's words about subtle poisons have me on edge. She's right, of course. The things we can't see are often the most dangerous.

As the air crackles with power, I feel a sudden surge of energy against my armor. It's not painful, exactly, more like a heavy pressure bearing down on my skin. I resist the urge to shift uncomfortably, knowing any movement could attract attention at this crucial moment.

My hand tightens on my mace, the solid weight of the weapon grounding me even as the magic swirls around us.

"Halie," I mutter under my breath, "if you're gonna do something, now's the time. Let's see what that blessed metal of yours can really do."

I keep my eyes fixed on the shadows, watching for any sign of movement. The skeletons we saw earlier haven't shown themselves again, but I have a feeling they're out there, watching and waiting.

Next to me, Jeane shifts slightly, her wings twitching as if sensing some unseen threat. I glance at her, noting the predatory gleam in her eyes. She may be half-demon, but right now, she's our best defense against whatever dark powers might be lurking in this place.

I turn my attention back to Halie as she reaches the climax of her ritual. The air crackles with power, and I feel a sudden surge of energy against my armor. It's not painful, exactly, more like a heavy pressure bearing down on my skin.

"Alright then," I say, my voice low but steady, "let's see if we can't give these dusty bones a one-way trip back to whatever hell they crawled out of."
