The air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and decay as the party stands before the ancient, rune-covered gate. The structure looms above them, its stones cracked and blackened, with roots twisting around the base like skeletal fingers. The gate itself breathes an eerie cold violet light, casting an otherworldly glow across the surrounding underbrush. Merrin's hand instinctively goes to the hilt of her crossbow, while Varrika's eyes scan the surrounding trees for any sign of movement. Jeane's gaze is fixed on the gate, her fingers drumming a slow rhythm on the silver holy symbol at her throat. Halie's eyes are closed, her face tilted slightly upwards as if seeking guidance from a higher power. Seraphine stands with her shoulders squared, her staff at the ready, her eyes fixed intently on the gate.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps forward, her crimson eyes scanning the intricate runes that crawl across the ancient gate like living shadows. The violet light pulses with an otherworldly rhythm, and she feels the dark magic radiating from the stone. "This gate is sealed by more than rust and age," she says, her voice low and measured. "These runes—they're older than anything I've seen in my studies. They're not meant to keep out thieves; they're designed to test faith itself."

She turns to face the rest of the party, her expression grave but confident. "We need to approach this carefully. The gate is likely booby-trapped with arcane safeguards. Merrin, see if there's a mechanical lock or hidden catch. Varrika and Halie, watch our flanks—those woods are too quiet."

She pauses, her gaze lingering on the tower that looms above them like a malevolent sentinel. "And Seraphine… prepare your most powerful wards. If this gate summons guardians, we need to be ready."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step forward, my silver cross necklace catching the violet light like captured moonlight. The air is wrong here—too still, too cold—and something ancient and malevolent pulses in the stones themselves. I feel it in my teeth, a taste of corruption that makes my skin crawl. "We should not rush this gate," I say, my voice low but firm. "These aren't ordinary wards—I can feel them testing our very presence. Merrin, be careful with any locks—the magic might cling to your tools." I look at Seraphine, her staff a comforting symbol of our shared faith. "And yes, sister—we should prepare every ward and blessing we have."

I move to stand beside Jeane, matching her serious gaze. "But also—while I respect your caution, my Goddess did not send us here to turn back at the first obstacle. We were chosen for a purpose, and I will not let fear decide our path."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step closer to the gate, my eyes narrowing as I study the intricate runes etched into the ancient stone. Jeane's right—these wards are no simple locks. They practically hum with malevolent energy, and I can feel them pricking at my skin like thorns. "Alright, alright," I mutter, more to myself than anyone else. "Let's see what we've got here..."

I draw my lockpicks from my belt, the metal feeling cold and heavy in my hands. As I reach for the gate's lock, I pause, a thought striking me. "Hey, Halie—mind giving us a blessing? Might help keep these wards from getting too feisty while I work."

I look up at the tower looming above us, its stones cracked and blackened. A shiver runs down my spine, but I force myself to grin. "And if we do summon something nasty, try not to let it eat all my face before I can duck behind Varrika's shield, yeah?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I nod slowly at Jeane's instructions, my eyes never leaving the pulsating runes on the gate. The air hums with ancient magic, thick and heavy like honey. It presses against my skin, testing, probing. "The wards are indeed complex," I murmur, my voice almost lost in the air. "They feel... sentient."
I raise my staff, its crystalline tip glowing with a soft blue light that seems to dim slightly as it nears the gate. A shiver runs down my spine as I feel the magic recoil from me, like a living thing pulling back into its shell.
"I will create a shield around us," I continue, my tone firming with resolve. "A ward against magical intrusion and physical attack." I turn to Merrin, who is already working on the lock, her hands steady despite the oppressive atmosphere. "Merrin, work quickly. The more we disturb this seal, the more it will try to... resist."
My gaze sweeps over Halie, whose faith seems to be a beacon in this darkness. "Halie, your prayers may help stabilize my wards once they're in place." I look back at the tower, its crooked stones seeming to leer down at us. "And whatever we summon here... I hope we can control it long enough to reach that sword."
The violet light of the gate intensifies for a moment as Merrin's lockpicks scrape against the mechanism inside. I feel a sudden surge of malevolent energy, like a cold wind blowing across my soul.
I grip my staff tighter, the crystal flaring brighter in response to my fear and determination. "Whatever happens next," I say, my voice steady now, "we face it together. This is our purpose."
I begin to chant under my breath, the words of power building a familiar rhythm in the air. The runes on my staff start to glow in intricate patterns, weaving a net of protection around our small group.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika steps forward, her heavy mace thumping against her thigh with each step. The air here is thick and heavy, like it's trying to push you back. She can feel the weight of centuries pressing down on her shoulders, the tower looming over them all like a dark promise. She looks at Merrin working on the lock, then at Halie and Seraphine preparing their defenses. A grim smile tugs at the corners of her mouth. "Alright, you lot. Let's see what these dark magics can do," she says, her voice a low rumble. "But if anything comes out of that gate that even looks like it might eat me, I'm going to need some cover."

She moves to stand beside the others, her hand tightening on the grip of her mace. The runes on the gate seem to pulse in time with her heartbeat, and she feels a sudden, sharp prickle at the back of her neck, like someone - or something - is watching them. Varrika takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of her armor and the solidity of her weapon in her hands. Whatever comes through that gate, whatever tests this ancient magic puts them through... she'll be ready for it. She's faced worse in her years as a soldier and a mercenary. And with this group at her back, she has a feeling they can handle just about anything. She nods to Jeane, then to Merrin. "Let's do this," she says, her voice steady and sure. "Show these old wards what a real fight looks like."
