Phase: escalating

The sound of crumbling stone echoed ominously through the ancient chamber, a haunting prelude to the cascade of debris that came crashing down mere feet from where Varikka stood. Merrin acted on pure instinct, lunging forward with desperate speed to catch her friend before she could be crushed beneath the falling rocks.
"Varikka! Stay back!" The wiry halfling woman cried out, her dark eyes wide with alarm as she witnessed the wall giving way so close to where Varikka struggled with her injured ankle. There was no time for hesitation, no moment to consider the risks - Merrin moved without thinking, her compact frame coiled with tension as she launched herself forward.
The weight of the rubble pressed down on Merrin's back, sharp edges digging into her flesh through her practical travel leathers. She gritted her teeth against the pain, straining every muscle to pull Varikka clear of the falling stones. The sound was deafening - a roar of shifting earth and groaning stone that seemed to shake the very foundations of the tower.
With a final heave, Merrin managed to drag Varikka to safety just as the last of the debris came crashing down where she had stood moments before. Both women collapsed to the ground, panting heavily from the exertion and adrenaline surge. The air was thick with dust, making it hard to see more than a few feet ahead.
Merrin's persistent headache throbbed insistently, a reminder of her near-drowning ordeal and the noxious gas exposure that still affected her concentration and balance. But right now, all she cared about was keeping Varikka safe and finding solid ground before either of them became trapped or worse.
"Everyone okay?" Merrin asked, her voice strained as she helped Varikka sit up. The larger woman's face was contorted with pain, her injured ankle already swelling visibly. "We need to keep moving," Merrin urged, glancing nervously at the dark opening ahead. "But carefully. One wrong step and we're both done for."
