The runes carved into the stone pillar flared brighter, casting stark shadows across Varikka's scarred face as she fought to stay upright through sheer determination alone. The ancient chamber groaned around them like a living thing in its death throes, each fresh tremor sending more dust cascading from the ceiling and making the already precarious footing even worse.

Merrin clung to her own support pillar across the room, crossbow aimed at the monstrous Guardian that filled the doorway with its bulk. The creature's single glowing eye fixed hungrily on them both, and it surged forward again with claws extended like scythes seeking harvest. Merrin's finger tightened on the trigger, but a fresh tremor made the floor buckle beneath her feet. She stumbled sideways, barely catching herself against another pillar as the shot went wide, embedding itself harmlessly in the creature's thick hide instead of its eye.

"Shit!" Merrin hissed through gritted teeth, already loading the next bolt with shaking hands while trying to maintain her balance amidst the shifting floor. The Guardian let out a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very stone at their feet, and took another lumbering step into the chamber. Its eye glowed brighter, fixed on Merrin now as she clung to the pillar for support.

Varikka's voice cut through the groaning stone again, barely audible over the chaos. "Merrin! Move! Get out of its path!" The runes on her pillar flared even brighter in response to her desperation, casting flickering shadows across her face as she struggled to keep weight off her injured ankle.

Merrin knew she had seconds at best before the creature was upon her. She finished loading the crossbow and aimed once more, this time bracing herself against the pillar with both hands to steady her shot. The Guardian began its charge, claws raised high, and Merrin pulled the trigger just as another tremor shook the chamber.

The bolt found its mark this time, sinking deep into the creature's eye socket with a sickening crunch of tearing flesh and splintering bone. The Guardian let out an unholy shriek that made Merrin's ears ring even over the roar of collapsing stone, then stumbled backward clutching at its ruined eye. For a moment, it seemed the beast might fall, but instead it simply turned and lurched back through the doorway from whence it came.

Merrin didn't wait to see if it would return. She scrambled down off her precarious perch on the pillar and half-stumbled, half-ran toward Varikka, ignoring the fresh cascade of debris that rained down around them both as more stone gave way overhead. The chamber was collapsing faster now, entire sections of wall crumbling inward to join the growing piles of rubble already scattered across the floor.

"Varikka!" Merrin shouted over the din of falling stone and groaning timbers. "We need to get out—now! The whole place is coming down!"

Varrika looked up as Merrin approached, face streaked with dust and sweat, but eyes still blazing with determination despite her obvious pain. She gestured frantically toward a narrow gap in the far wall that Merrin hadn't noticed before—the same one through which the Guardian had just retreated.

"That way!" Varikka shouted back, voice barely audible over the roar of collapsing stone. "I think I saw... something... light... go through there!"

Merrin didn't hesitate. She slung her crossbow across her back and grabbed Varikka's good arm with both hands, helping to support her weight as they half-stumbled, half-fell toward the narrow gap in the wall. The floor bucked violently beneath them as another section gave way just feet away, sending a fresh wave of rubble cascading across their path.

They ducked through the opening just as a massive chunk of ceiling came crashing down where they'd been standing moments before, the impact sending a shockwave of dust and debris exploding outward into the chamber behind them. Merrin coughed and sputtered as she helped Varikka through to the other side, both of them collapsing against the wall in the relative safety of whatever new chamber they'd stumbled into.

Merrin looked around quickly, trying to get her bearings despite the persistent headache that made it hard to focus clearly. They seemed to have emerged into a much narrower passage than the chamber they'd just fled, lined with more of those strange glowing runes that pulsed with an eerie light. The air here felt different too—cooler, almost fresh compared to the dust-choked atmosphere of the collapsing room.

But there was no time to admire their new surroundings. The sound of shifting stone and groaning timbers continued unabated from the chamber behind them, punctuated by the occasional crash as more debris came tumbling down. Merrin helped Varikka to her feet, supporting most of her weight as they began to limp cautiously deeper into the narrow passage.

"Did you really see light back there?" Merrin asked, voice hoarse from coughing and exertion.

Varrika nodded, wincing slightly as she put pressure on her injured ankle. "I think so... just for a second. Like sunlight, but... wrong somehow. Unnatural."

Merrin felt a shiver run down her spine that had nothing to do with the cool air of their new surroundings. She knew they needed to keep moving, needed to find a way out before this entire cursed tower came crashing down around them both. But part of her wondered if escaping one death trap only to stumble into something far worse was truly an improvement.

Still, it beat waiting here to be buried alive by collapsing stone. Merrin tightened her grip on Varikka's arm and helped her forward into the depths of the glowing passage, wondering what new horrors awaited them in the heart of this ancient, mad architect's domain.
