Round 970 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As we breathe a sigh of relief at having stabilized the altar, the ground beneath us shifts once more. The sound of falling rocks and debris grows louder, and the Guardian's single eye gleams with malevolent hunger as it looms closer. Suddenly, a section of the tunnel wall collapses, sending rocks tumbling down towards us. Varikka grabs my arm, her grip like a vice. "We need to move now!" she shouts above the din of the falling debris. The Guardian takes advantage of our distraction, dashing forward to pursue us with unnatural speed. We dash down the tunnel, the altar's unstable surface still resonating beneath our feet. As we run, the air grows thick with the smell of damp earth and decay. I can feel the weight of the tower's structural instability pressing down upon me, making every step feel like a gamble. The Guardian is closing in fast, its presence making my skin crawl with an otherworldly chill. Immediate pressure: Do you try to outrun the Guardian, or do you look for a way to divert its attention?
I feel Varikka's grip on my arm tighten as we dash down the tunnel, the sound of falling rocks and debris growing louder behind us. The air is thick with the smell of damp earth and decay, making it hard to breathe. I can feel the Guardian's presence closing in, its otherworldly chill raising the hairs on the back of my neck. "Varikka, we need to find a way to slow it down!" I shout above the din of the collapsing tunnel. "We can't outrun it like this."
I scan the tunnel ahead, my eyes searching for anything we can use as a distraction or trap. In the darkness ahead, I spot a large pile of rubble, partially blocking the path. An idea forms in my mind. "Varikka, when we reach that pile of rocks, I'm going to try and collapse it behind us," I say, my voice strained with effort as we run. "It might give us a few extra seconds to escape."
Varikka nods, her grip tightening on her Heavy Mace as she prepares to fight if necessary. As we approach the pile of rubble, I reach out with my free hand and grab a large stone, using it to knock over the unstable pile. The rocks tumble down behind us, creating a makeshift barrier between us and the Guardian. For a moment, the sound of falling debris fills the air, masking our footsteps as we continue to run. But as we round a corner in the tunnel, I can feel the ground shifting beneath my feet once more. The sound of falling rocks grows louder, and the air feels thick with tension. Suddenly, the Guardian's single eye gleams in the darkness ahead, its presence making my skin crawl with an otherworldly chill. "Varikka, look out!" I shout, as a section of the tunnel wall collapses, sending rocks tumbling down towards us. Varikka raises her Heavy Mace, using it to fend off the falling debris as we press ourselves against the wall. The Guardian takes advantage of our distraction, dashing forward with unnatural speed. Its claws scrabble against the stone walls, its single eye glowing with malevolent hunger as it looms closer. "Merrin, what do we do now?" Varikka pants, her voice strained with exhaustion and fear. I scan the tunnel ahead, my heart pounding in my chest as I search for any sign of an escape route. The air is thick with the smell of damp earth and decay, making it hard to breathe. In the darkness ahead, I can see another passage leading deeper into the heart of the tower. But something about this place feels wrong, like we're being led into a trap. "I don't know," I say, my voice trembling with dread as I take a step towards the tunnel. "But we have to keep moving forward. We can't go back now."
Varikka nods, her grip tightening on her Heavy Mace as she follows me into the darkness ahead. The sound of falling rocks and the Guardian's relentless pursuit grows fainter behind us, but I know it's only a matter of time before it catches up to us again. We have to find a way to escape this place, or we'll be trapped here forever. The tunnel winds deeper into the heart of the tower, the air growing thicker and more oppressive with each step. The runes on the altar's surface pulse with an otherworldly light, their energy crackling through the air like a lightning storm. I can feel the weight of the tower's structural instability pressing down upon me, making every step feel like a gamble. Suddenly, Varikka stops in her tracks, her eyes fixed on something ahead. "Merrin," she whispers, her voice trembling with fear. "Look at that."
I peer into the darkness ahead, my heart pounding in my chest as I try to make out what she's seeing. And then I see it too. In the distance, just visible in the flickering light of the runes, is a massive stone door, its surface covered in ancient runes and symbols. And on either side of the door, two enormous statues loom over us, their faces contorted in agony as they reach out towards something we can't see. "Varikka," I say, my voice barely above a whisper. "I think we've found the heart of this tower."
And as we step closer to the door, I can feel the energy pulsing from the runes on its surface, raising the hairs on the back of my neck. Something about this place feels wrong, like we're being watched by unseen eyes in the shadows. And as I look at Varikka, I can see a glimmer of fear in her eyes, mixed with a deepening sense of unease. "We have to be careful now," she says, her voice strained with effort as she takes another step towards the door. "Whatever's on the other side of that door... it's going to change everything."
I nod, my heart pounding in my chest as I follow Varikka towards the massive stone structure. The runes on its surface glow brighter as we approach, their energy crackling through the air like a lightning storm. And as we reach the door, I can feel the weight of the tower's structural instability pressing down upon me, making every step feel like a gamble. But we have no choice now. We have to open this door and see what lies beyond. For better or for worse, our fate has been sealed, and there's no turning back now.
