Phase: escalating

The water roared in Merrin's ears as she fought her way to the surface, gasping for air the moment her head broke free. Her wiry halfling frame was soaked and exhausted, every muscle screaming from the desperate struggle against the current. The fast-moving river had swept them downstream with terrifying speed, and now they were trapped in some hidden stone chamber beneath its surface - a maze of submerged tunnels and unstable ground that threatened to collapse at any moment.
She spotted the source of the strange light immediately: a pulsing orb embedded in the ceiling, casting an eerie blue glow over everything. It was beautiful and terrifying all at once, illuminating the treacherous terrain ahead while offering no real answers about where they were or how to escape. The water here was calmer than before, but still moving with enough force to make standing unaided nearly impossible.
Merrin's dark eyes scanned the chamber frantically, taking in every detail as her rogue instincts kicked into high gear. She saw Varikka first - their powerful dwarf companion clinging to a rocky outcropping nearby, her face contorted in pain as she fought to stay afloat despite her severely sprained ankle. Elric was there too, desperately trying to reach her while keeping one eye on the ominous barrier behind them.
The sound of heavy impacts echoed through the stone around them again, louder this time. The Guardian had broken through its own chamber door and was now actively pursuing them through the tunnels beyond. Its roar seemed closer than ever before, a primal sound that sent ice through Merrin's veins even as she tried to process everything happening around her.
She needed solid ground. Needed to find something stable to hold onto before both of them collapsed from exhaustion or worse - drowning again was not an option after nearly dying in that current moments ago. Her compact halfling build might be quick and agile on dry land, but it offered no advantage against the relentless force of water.
The chamber seemed to pulse with each impact, dust falling from the ceiling as the ancient stone structure groaned under strain. They had to move - had to find a way out before this entire place came crashing down around them. But how could they navigate these treacherous tunnels when Varikka could barely move without screaming in pain? When every step might trigger a collapse or lead them into another deadly trap?
Merrin's hands moved instinctively, searching for handholds as she swam towards the nearest solid surface. Her fingers found purchase on rough stone, and she pulled herself up with desperate strength. The water lapped at her waist now instead of threatening to submerge her entirely - a small victory in a situation that felt increasingly hopeless.
She could see everything clearly from this vantage point: Varikka struggling against the current, face pale with pain; Elric frantically trying to reach her while keeping one eye on the barrier behind them; and the ominous glow of The Guardian's pursuit growing brighter with each passing moment. They were trapped between the dangers of the water and the dangers of whatever chased them through these tunnels.
Merrin's head throbbed with a persistent ache - remnants of the noxious gas they'd encountered earlier still affecting her balance and concentration. But there was no time to dwell on that now. She needed to think, to plan, to find some way out of this mess before it was too late for all of them.
The current tugged at her legs insistently, threatening to pull her back into its depths if she didn't maintain a firm grip on the stone above. She could feel the panic rising in her chest again - the memory of drowning still too fresh, too vivid. But she pushed it down with sheer force of will. They had survived this far against impossible odds. They would survive this too... somehow.
Her quick halfling hands found a crack in the rock face, and she pulled herself higher until she was fully out of the water at last. The cold stone pressed against her back as she clung to the wall, gasping for breath and trying to ignore the persistent ache in her skull. From this position, she could at least assess their situation properly - could try to think like a rogue instead of just reacting with terror.
But even as she struggled to regain her composure, another loud crash echoed through the chamber. The Guardian was closer now - close enough that Merrin could feel the vibrations in the stone beneath her hands. They had maybe minutes before it found them here in this watery tomb.
She forced herself to focus, to push aside the fear and exhaustion gnawing at her insides. Varikka needed help. Elric needed backup. And they all needed a plan - fast - or this would be the end of their adventure for good.
