Phase: escalating

The ground shuddered again, a fresh crack echoing through the tunnel. Dust swirled into the air, momentarily blinding them before settling. When their vision cleared, Merrin saw the fast-moving river below had changed course—now flowing directly toward them, its edge mere feet away from where they stood huddled on the narrow ledge.
"Elric! Varikka!" she shouted over the roar of the current, her voice tight with urgency. She grabbed Varrika's arm, steadying the dwarf woman as she wavered on her injured ankle. The fighter slumped against her for support, face pale and drawn from both pain and exhaustion.
"I see a narrow path along the wall," Elric called out, pointing to a precarious ledge just above the rushing water. "But it's barely wide enough for one person." Varrika snatched the torch from him, her grip tight despite her trembling hands. The flickering light revealed the treacherous terrain ahead—loose rocks, crumbling edges, and the constant threat of the surging river below.
"We need to keep moving or we'll be swept away," Merrin said grimly, helping Varrika shift her weight to distribute it more evenly across the ledge. The fighter's injured ankle pulsed with fresh agony at every slight movement, but she gritted her teeth and pushed forward.
The roar of rushing water filled their ears as they inched along the narrow path, Merrin supporting Varrika's weight while Elric provided light and guidance from behind. With each step, the river seemed to surge closer, its ominous current threatening to pull them both into its depths.
Suddenly, a fresh tremor shook the tunnel, and a loud crack echoed off the walls. The ground beneath their feet shifted alarmingly, and Merrin felt Varrika's grip tighten around her arm as they both fought to maintain their balance on the crumbling ledge.
"Hold on!" she cried out, wrapping an arm around the dwarf woman's waist to steady her. But it was too late—their precarious foothold gave way completely, sending them tumbling toward the fast-moving water below.
The impact was brutal as they hit the surface, the current immediately sweeping them away in its powerful grasp. Merrin fought to keep her head above water, her arms and legs flailing as she struggled against the relentless pull of the rushing rapids.
"Varikka!" she screamed, desperate to spot her friend in the churning water around them. The fighter was being swept along just a few feet away, her body bobbing helplessly with each surge and crash of the rapids.
They tumbled over rocks and through narrow gaps in the tunnel, the world spinning around them as they fought for breath between drenching waves of water. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of terror, they were both thrown onto a shallow gravel bank at the edge of the river's flow.
Merrin coughed and gasped for air, her body aching from the brutal impact and subsequent battering against the rocks. She lifted her head, scanning the area for Varikka with desperate eyes.
The dwarf woman lay motionless on the ground nearby, face down in the shallow water at the river's edge. Merrin scrambled to her side, turning her over with trembling hands.
"Varikka! Wake up!" she shouted, pressing her ear against the fighter's chest. The steady beat of a heartbeat reassured her, but Varrika remained unconscious, her skin pale and clammy to the touch.
Elric stumbled onto the bank moments later, his face etched with concern as he took in the scene. "Is she alright?" he asked, dropping to his knees beside them.
Merrin bit her lip, worry evident in her expression. "She's breathing, but unconscious. And her ankle... it must be even worse now after that fall." She gently probed Varikka's injured leg, wincing at the dwarf woman's pained groan in response.
"We need to get her out of here," Elric said urgently, glancing around at their surroundings. "This whole place is unstable—we could have another collapse any moment."
Merrin nodded grimly, her mind racing as she tried to think of a solution. They couldn't stay here, but moving Varikka in her current state seemed impossible without causing even more damage.
"Help me prop her up," she said, gesturing for Elric to assist. Together, they carefully maneuvered Varrika into a sitting position, supporting her weight between them. The fighter's eyes fluttered open briefly before closing again, her breathing shallow and labored.
"We need to find somewhere safe to rest," Merrin muttered, more to herself than to Elric. "Somewhere we can tend to her injuries properly."
As if in response to her words, a fresh tremor shook the cavern around them. Rocks tumbled from the ceiling above, splashing into the river mere feet away. The water level rose suddenly, surging forward with renewed force.
"Move!" Elric shouted, hauling Varrika up and over his shoulder in one swift motion. Merrin stumbled after him, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched the rapidly rising water chase them across the cavern floor.
They sprinted toward a narrow opening in the wall opposite the river, Elric leading the way with Varikka's unconscious form weighing him down. Merrin pushed herself harder, muscles burning as she fought to keep up despite her own exhaustion and the persistent ache in her head from the noxious gas exposure.
They dove through the opening just as a massive section of the ceiling collapsed behind them, sending a cascade of rocks and debris tumbling into the now-flooded cavern. The roar of rushing water filled their ears as the river surged past where they'd been standing mere moments before.
Merrin lay on the ground panting, her body trembling with adrenaline and relief. She looked up to see Elric gently lowering Varrika to the floor of what appeared to be a small cave, his face etched with concern as he examined the fighter's injuries.
"We need to tend to her ankle," he said, already beginning to carefully remove Varikka's boot. "And check for any other injuries."
Merrin nodded, scrambling over to help. As they worked to assess Varrika's condition, she couldn't shake the feeling that their ordeal was far from over. The unstable tunnels, the rising water levels, and the ominous sense of something ancient and malevolent lurking in the depths of this place—all of it combined to fill her with a growing dread.
But for now, they had found a momentary respite. And as she helped Elric tend to Varikka's wounds, Merrin vowed silently that they would find a way out of this nightmare together, no matter what dangers lay ahead.
