The water was a living thing, cold and relentless, pulling them downstream faster than Merrin could think. She fought against it instinctively, muscles burning as she tried to keep Varikka upright, to distribute her weight evenly across both feet instead of letting the current sweep one leg out from under her.

"Varikka!" Her voice was lost in the roar of rushing water, but she saw the woman's head snap up at her name. Merrin couldn't let her fall, not with that ankle already screaming its protests every time Varikka put weight on it. She shifted her grip, one arm locking around Varrika's waist while her other hand reached out to steady her against the rock face.

They were moving too fast. The current was too strong, and Merrin could feel her own strength flagging with each passing second. But she couldn't let go, couldn't abandon Varikka to this merciless water. She dug her heels into the stone, ignoring the way the sharp edges bit into her skin through her boots.

Elric's torch flickered desperately behind them, his face a mask of concentration as he fought to keep up. The Guardian's roar echoed through the cavern again, closer now somehow, ominous and hungry. Merrin felt a fresh surge of fear but pushed it down. They had to move, had to find solid ground before both of them collapsed.

The river twisted and turned like a serpent beneath them, each bend bringing new dangers. Rocks jutted out at odd angles, waiting to catch an ankle or smash a skull. Merrin's rogue instincts screamed at her to focus, to navigate this treacherous path with the same precision she'd used to pick locks and disarm traps.

But every step was a struggle against the current, every breath a gasp of effort as she fought to keep them both alive. The water churned around them, icy fingers reaching up to pull them back down into its depths. Merrin gritted her teeth, refusing to give in. She had to find a way out of this. For Varikka. For herself. Before the entire structure gave way and buried them all.

The current tugged at her again, insistent and cruel. Merrin leaned into it, using the momentum to propel them forward instead of fighting against it. Each movement was calculated, every muscle in her body working overtime to maintain control. She wasn't just swimming anymore - she was dancing with death, and she refused to let it lead.

The roar of the water filled her ears, drowning out everything else. But beneath it all, she could still hear Varrika's labored breathing beside her. That sound kept her going, pushed her beyond exhaustion into a place where fear didn't exist anymore, only the desperate need to survive. Together.

They rounded another bend, and Merrin's eyes widened as she spotted it - a narrow ledge running along the edge of the river, just wide enough for both of them to cling to. It was rough stone, sharp in places, but solid. Real. She reached out with one hand, fingers brushing against the edge.

"Varikka!" she shouted again, louder this time. "Grab on! We're almost there!" Her voice cracked with effort, but the message got through. Varrika nodded, face set in determination despite the pain clearly written across her features. Together, they lunged for the ledge, fingers scrabbling against stone as Merrin's hand closed around a protruding edge.

She pulled with everything she had, muscles screaming in protest as she hauled them both up onto solid ground at last. The current tugged at their legs, trying to pull them back into its embrace, but Merrin held fast. They were safe. For now.

Merrin collapsed against the stone, gasping for air that didn't taste like water for once. Her entire body ached, muscles burning from the exertion, skin raw where it had scraped against rock. But she was alive. Varikka was alive. And that was all that mattered right now.

She looked up at Elric as he finally made his way to them, torch held high against the encroaching darkness. His face was etched with worry, but there was pride in his eyes too. Merrin managed a weak smile in return before turning her attention back to Varrika.

"You okay?" she asked, voice hoarse. The other woman nodded, though her face was pale and drawn with pain. "I'll live," Varrika managed, voice tight. "But we need to find a way out of here fast. Before the whole place comes down on our heads."

Merrin couldn't argue with that. She pushed herself upright, every muscle protesting the movement, but knew they didn't have time to rest. Not with the Guardian still smashing against that door behind them, each impact sending fresh tremors through the stone around them.

"We keep moving," she said firmly, offering a hand to help Varikka up. "Forward is our only option right now. We'll find another way out. We have to." She wasn't sure if she was trying to convince Varrika or herself, but either way, the words steadied her. They'd made it this far against impossible odds. They could make it through this too. Together.

The current still tugged at their feet, a constant reminder of how close they'd come to drowning. Merrin shook her head, focusing on solid ground and forward momentum. One step at a time. That was all she needed to do. To keep them both alive. Until they found a way out of this nightmare.

And if the structure chose that moment to collapse around their ears? Well, at least they'd go out fighting. Together.
