As we press on, the passageway suddenly opens up into a larger chamber, the ceiling lost in darkness. The air is thick with dust, and the scent of decay hangs heavy over the room. We find ourselves at the edge of a massive underground lake, its surface churning with powerful currents. Varikka stumbles, her splinted ankle wincing in pain as she nearly falls into the water. Elric quickly grabs her arm, holding her steady as he scans the area. "The Guardian's not far behind," he warns, his torch beam cutting through the darkness. "We need to find a way across." A small wooden boat bobs on the lake's surface, partially hidden by the shadows.

I peer into the darkness, my eyes straining to make out any signs of movement. The Guardian's bellows grow louder, echoing through the tunnels behind us, and I know we don't have much time. "The boat," I whisper urgently, pointing to the small craft bobbing on the water's surface. "It's our only chance."

I turn to Varikka, my expression grim. "Can you make it? I can swim across and pull the boat to the other side if I have to." My heart aches at the thought of leaving her behind, but I know we can't all risk getting swept away by the current.

Elric nods, his torchlight casting flickering shadows on the walls. "Aye, that's our best hope," he says, his voice low and urgent. "But we'll need to move fast. That thing won't stay trapped for long."

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I'm about to do. "Varikka, you stay here with Elric," I say, my voice shaking slightly. "I'll swim across and pull the boat back for you. It's too risky to try to all get in at once."

Varikka nods, her face set with determination. "Go," she says, her voice hoarse but steady. "I'll be ready when you get back."

With a final glance at my companions, I turn and dash towards the water's edge, my heart pounding in my chest. The current is strong, and I can feel the weight of my armor dragging me down as I wade into the frigid depths. But I know we can't afford to hesitate. "Hold fast," I call out to Varikka and Elric, my voice barely audible over the roar of the water. "I'll be back before you know it."

And with that, I dive beneath the surface, my arms cutting through the churning waves as I swim towards the boat, praying that whatever lies ahead will be better than the fate that awaits us if we stay.
