Phase: escalating

Merrin's heart raced as she grabbed Varrika's hand, the dwarf's grip firm despite her obvious pain. The water was already up to their knees, swirling with terrifying speed. "On three," Merrin gasped, counting rapidly before they both lunged forward in a desperate sprint toward the hidden door. Each step was agony for them both - Merrin's ankle screamed protest and Varrika limped heavily on her injured leg. But the terror of drowning again drove them onward, adrenaline masking their exhaustion just long enough to reach the entrance.
They stumbled through just as the water reached waist-height behind them, the force of it nearly pulling them back into the current. Merrin slammed the hidden door shut with both hands, the sound of rushing water intensifying on the other side until it was barely audible at all. They collapsed against each other in the narrow passage beyond, gasping for breath.
"Did we... did we make it?" Varrika panted, her face pale with pain and exertion.
Merrin nodded, still trying to catch her own breath. "For now," she managed between gulps of air. "But that water's not going down anytime soon. We need to keep moving if we want to survive this place."
Varrika grimaced as she shifted her weight onto her good leg, the movement clearly causing her pain. "Surviving is becoming increasingly difficult when every step feels like I'm tearing my ankle apart," she growled. "How far do you think we have to go before we're safe from that flood?"
Merrin glanced around at their new surroundings - a cramped stone corridor barely wide enough for them both, stretching upward into darkness. She could make out the faint outline of stairs leading further up. "I don't know," she admitted reluctantly. "But I'd rather take my chances climbing than drowning down there." She reached out to steady Varrika as the dwarf tried to stand fully upright. "Lean on me if you need to. We'll take it slow, but we have to keep moving."
Varrika accepted Merrin's support with a nod of gratitude, her expression showing both pain and determination. "Alright," she said firmly. "Let's get out of here before something else tries to kill us."
