As Merrin and Varikka press on, the air grows thick with mist, and the sound of rushing water grows almost deafening. The tunnel narrows further, forcing them to move closer together, their shoulders brushing against each other as they stumble forward. Varikka's injured ankle protests with every step, her face set in a grimace of pain. The Guardian's battle rages on behind them, the creature's glowing orbs fixed on Merrin like a predator sensing prey. Suddenly, a chunk of the tunnel wall gives way, showering them both in a cascade of rubble. The Guardian leaps aside just in time, but the creature is not so lucky - the falling rocks catch it square in the back, sending it crashing to the ground in a tangle of limbs and claws. The tunnel opens up into a vast underground chamber, the ceiling lost in darkness. A faint glow emanates from the far side of the room, casting an eerie light on the crumbling walls. The sound of rushing water grows louder still, and Merrin can feel the dampness seeping into their clothes.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I grit my teeth as we stumble into the vast underground chamber, Varikka's weight heavy against my side. The sound of rushing water is almost deafening now, echoing off the crumbling walls and making it hard to think straight. I squint into the darkness, trying to make out any sign of danger or escape, but all I can see is a faint glow coming from the far side of the room.

I risk a glance at Varikka, my eyes widening as I take in her pale, sweat-sheened face and the way she's favouring her bad ankle with every step. "We need to find somewhere to rest," I pant, my voice barely audible over the roar of water. "You can't keep going like this."

Varikka shakes her head, a stubborn set to her jaw. "I'll be fine," she grits out through clenched teeth. "We have to keep moving, or that thing will catch up to us."

She's right, of course. The creature's glowing orbs are still fixed on me like a predator sensing prey, and I know it's only a matter of time before it catches up to us. But Varikka's ankle is in bad shape, and if we don't give her a chance to rest, she might not be able to fight when the time comes.

I hesitate for a moment, caught between the need to keep moving and the need to help my friend. But then I see a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye, and I know we've run out of time.

"Down!" I shout, shoving Varikka to the ground as I whirl to face the threat. The creature bursts from the shadows like a nightmare given form, its glowing orbs burning with an eerie greenish light. It's even more badly mangled than before - one of its arms is bent at an unnatural angle, and its torso is crisscrossed with deep gashes that ooze some kind of viscous, shimmering fluid. But it's still moving, still coming for us, and I know we're in for the fight of our lives.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I push myself up off the ground, my injured ankle screaming in protest. Merrin is already on her feet, weapon at the ready as she faces down the creature that's burst from the shadows. I can see the fear in her eyes, but there's a spark of that old fire too, that unbreakable spirit that's kept us alive this long. "Get behind me," I growl, limping to stand beside Merrin. My hand goes to the hilt of my blade, fingers curling around the familiar grip. The creature looms before us, its glowing orbs burning with an eerie greenish light. It's even more badly mangled than before - one of its arms is bent at an unnatural angle, and its torso is crisscrossed with deep gashes that ooze some kind of viscous, shimmering fluid. But it's still moving, still coming for us, and I know we're in for the fight of our lives. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. The sound of rushing water fills my ears, echoing off the crumbling walls of the underground chamber. Somewhere behind us, I can hear the distant roar of the Guardian's battle, but it feels like a lifetime away. "Ready?" I ask Merrin, my voice tight with tension. She nods, her grip tightening on her weapon. "Ready."

And then we charge forward to meet our fate.
