Phase: escalating

The air grew thick with the taste of dust and decay as Merrin helped Varrika to her feet in the crumbling corridor. The dwarf woman's face was etched with pain, her grip on the Time-Splitting Sword white-knuckled as she favored her injured ankle. "Thanks," Varrika ground out through clenched teeth, her voice strained with more than just physical agony. "I don't know what I'd do without you here." She glanced up at the narrow stairway ahead, a visible shudder running through her powerful frame.
Merrin's eyes darted between Varrika's pained expression and the ominous stone door at the bottom of the stairs. The ancient carvings seemed to writhe in the flickering torchlight, each tremor of the collapsing tunnel sending fresh showers of debris raining down around them. "We need to move," she said urgently, her voice barely carrying over the rumble of shifting stone. "The whole place is coming down."
Varrika nodded, but her movements were stiff and hesitant. "I know," she replied, her words clipped with pain. "But this tunnel's getting narrower by the second. The walls are closing in on us like a vise." She peered into the darkness ahead, her eyes straining to make out any details in the gloom. "Merrin, can you see anything up ahead? Any sign of an exit or a safe place to rest?"
The ground trembled again, more insistently this time. A shower of small stones rained down from overhead, one striking Merrin's shoulder with a sharp pain. She bit back a yelp, her grip on the wall tightening instinctively. "Nothing but more darkness," she admitted reluctantly, her eyes scanning the corridor ahead. "But we can't stay here - the ceiling's going to come down soon."
Varrika's jaw clenched, and for a moment Merrin thought the dwarf might argue against descending further into the unknown depths. But then she nodded slowly, her expression grim. "Alright," she said, her voice barely audible over the creaking of stressed stone. "Let's go. But we stick together - no matter what's waiting down there."
