The ground shudders beneath Merrin's feet as she pulls on the rope, her muscles screaming in protest. The rope creaks and strains, but holds firm for a moment before snapping, sending Merrin stumbling backward. Varikka's grip on the rope falters, and she loses her balance, her injured ankle giving out beneath her. She tumbles toward the edge of the ledge, her hands flailing wildly as she desperately tries to regain her footing. The Guardian takes another step closer, its eyes fixed on Merrin with an unnerving intensity. The air is thick with noxious gas, and Merrin can feel it burning her lungs. She knows they're running out of time – the structural collapse is imminent, and the ledge will give way at any moment.

I feel my stomach drop as I watch Varikka tumble towards the edge of the ledge, her hands flailing wildly as she tries to regain her footing. The rope snaps, the frayed ends whipping through the air before falling limply to the ground. "Varikka!" I cry out, my voice filled with panic as I lunge forward, trying to grab onto her arm. But it's too late - she slips over the edge, her body disappearing into the darkness below. For a moment, there is only silence, broken by the distant sound of Varikka's scream echoing off the stone walls. Then, a splash - and then silence again. "No, no, no," I mutter under my breath, my heart pounding in my chest as I stare down into the chasm below. But there is no sign of Varikka, no movement in the dark waters that fill the bottom of the pit. I take a deep breath, trying to calm the rising panic in my chest. I know we can't stay here - the whole chamber is about to come down around us, and the noxious gas is already starting to burn my lungs. But Varikka... she's out there somewhere, alone and injured, maybe even drowning as we speak. I can't just leave her. I glance over at the Guardian, who is still watching me with an unnerving intensity. For a moment, I consider trying to fight my way past it, to find some other way down into the chasm below. But as I reach for my crossbow, I feel the ground beneath my feet shift and shudder. A chunk of stone dislodges from the ceiling above me, crashing down onto the ledge mere inches from where I'm standing. I yelp in surprise, stumbling back from the edge as more and more debris rains down around me. The chamber is shaking violently now, and I can feel the ledge starting to crumble beneath my feet. "Shit," I mutter under my breath, my eyes darting frantically from side to side as I try to find some way out of this nightmare. But there's nothing - no other way down, no other way out. And with Varikka still lost somewhere in the darkness below, and the Guardian closing in, I know we're running out of time. I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves as I scan the ledge once more. But there's nothing - no other way down, no other way out. It's the rope or nothing at all. And so, with a silent prayer to whatever gods might be listening, I grip onto the ends of the rope and start hauling with all my might, my muscles burning with effort as I try to pull Varikka up to safety. But even as I pull, I know it's futile. The rope is weak, and my strength is fading fast. I can feel the ledge crumbling beneath my feet, and the air is growing thick with noxious gas. And Varikka... she's still down there somewhere, lost in the darkness, and I don't know if she's alive or dead. But I can't think about that now. I have to keep moving, keep fighting, keep hoping. Because if I stop, if I give up... then we're both dead for sure.
