Merrin moved forward with careful precision, testing each plank before putting her full weight on it. The wood groaned ominously beneath her feet, but she forced herself to keep going. Behind her, Varikka watched anxiously, ready to grab onto the dwarf woman if the bridge gave way.

"See?" Merrin called back, her voice echoing slightly in the narrow passageway. "It's not so bad. Just a few more steps and we'll be on solid ground again." But even as she spoke, a loud crack echoed through the air, and one of the planks beneath her snapped cleanly in two.

Varrika lunged forward instinctively, grabbing Merrin by the back of her shirt just as the halfling's foot plunged through the rotted wood. The sudden jolt sent them both tumbling to the ground, but they managed to land on the solid stone edge of the chasm rather than plummeting into the darkness below.

Merrin lay there for a moment, breathing heavily, her heart pounding in her chest. "Well," she said at last, trying to inject some humor into her voice despite the lingering adrenaline rush. "That was... exciting." She looked up at Varrika, who had landed half on top of her in the fall. The dwarf woman's face was etched with pain from her sprained ankle, but there was also a look of fierce determination in her eyes.

"Thanks for the save," Merrin added softly. "I owe you one."

Varrika shook her head, wincing as she shifted her weight off Merrin's chest. "You don't owe me anything. We're partners, remember? Besides, I told you that bridge was a death trap." She paused, then added with grudging respect, "But I have to admit, your reflexes are impressive. Most people would've panicked and fallen for sure."

Merrin sat up slowly, brushing dust off her clothes. "Years of practice," she said with a grin. "Though I have to say, this is the first time I've ever had to use them quite like that." She glanced around at their surroundings, taking in the narrow ledge and the precarious footing. "Now then... how far do you think we have to go before we reach solid ground again?"

Varrika grimaced, looking down at her injured ankle. "Too far for my liking," she admitted. "But we don't have much choice. The water's already up to our ankles here, and I can feel the whole floor shaking." She met Merrin's gaze with a determined expression. "We need to move—fast. Can you help me up?"

Merrin nodded and carefully helped Varrika to her feet, supporting most of the dwarf woman's weight as they began to pick their way across the treacherous ledge. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and mold, and the sound of scurrying rodents grew louder as they moved deeper into the ancient stone chamber.

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the air behind them, followed by the unmistakable sound of shifting stone. Merrin risked a glance back, her heart pounding. "We've got company," she breathed, helping Varrika hop faster despite the agony in her friend's face. The rogue guided them carefully across the unstable ground, her keen eyes picking out the safest path through the rubble.

But with no light source and every surface ready to crumble beneath their weight, even Merrin's skill had its limits. As they pressed onward, the sound of shifting stone grew louder behind them. The ancient stone chamber held its breath for a moment before the next tremor ripped through the air. Merrin clutched Varrika tighter as the dwarf woman winced, her sprained ankle screaming in protest. "This place is coming down," Merrin hissed, scanning the ceiling for fresh cracks or shifting stones. "We need to move—fast." But every step Varrika took sent pain shooting up her leg, and the precarious footing offered little reassurance.

Varikka gritted her teeth, leaning heavily on Merrin's shoulder. "I'm not going to slow us down," she growled, though the words came out more like a pained grunt than a confident declaration.
