As they stand frozen in the darkness, the Guardian's laughter echoes through the chamber once more, its voice dripping with malice. "You think you can escape me that easily? I'll show you the true meaning of darkness." Suddenly, the torches on the walls flicker back to life, casting eerie shadows across the room. The Guardian steps forward, its presence filling the space. "The Shadow in the Light," it says, its voice low and menacing. "You will soon learn its true meaning." With a wave of its hand, the Guardian conjures a dark, shadowy duplicate of itself, which begins to move towards Varikka and Merrin.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

By the gods, what is this shadowy abomination? I keep my crossbow trained on the dark duplicate, my finger poised on the trigger. But doubt gnaws at me - will bolts even harm a creature made of pure darkness? I glance at Varikka, trying to gauge her reaction in the flickering torchlight. "Keep your distance from that thing!" I hiss. "And watch for any weak points we can exploit."

My mind races as I try to puzzle out the Guardian's cryptic riddle. The Shadow in the Light... could it refer to this sinister doppelganger? Or is there some deeper meaning, some hidden weakness we can exploit? I mutter another quick prayer to Moradin, begging for wisdom and strength in this dark hour. Suddenly, the shadowy duplicate lunges towards Varikka, its form twisting and warping like a living nightmare. Without hesitation, the warrior steps forward to meet it, her mace raised high. "Come and get me, you miserable wretch!" she roars, bringing her weapon down in a mighty blow. The impact sends shockwaves through the chamber, and for a moment, the shadowy form seems to falter. But then it regains its strength, laughing all the while. Varikka staggers back, her injured ankle buckling beneath her. I move to support her, keeping my crossbow trained on the enemy. "We need to find a way to banish this thing," I mutter urgently, scanning the room for any clues or weaknesses we can exploit. The cryptic message in the book still nags at me - could it hold the key to our salvation? Or will we be doomed to face this shadowy abomination and whatever other horrors await us in the depths of this accursed place? I keep my wits about me, ready to act at a moment's notice. By Moradin's beard, we've faced our share of dangers so far. But something about this chamber feels different, like we're treading on ground where the very rules of reality may bend and twist against us. Still, we have no choice but to press on, to find a way to overcome this threat and survive another day in this nightmare realm.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The dwarf warrior grunts in pain as her injured ankle buckles beneath her, but she doesn't let it slow her down. She keeps her mace raised, ready to strike at the shadowy duplicate with everything she's got. "This thing is no match for a dwarf's strength!" she roars, stepping forward to meet the creature head-on. Varikka's mind races as she tries to make sense of the Guardian's cryptic riddle. The Shadow in the Light... it has to mean this shadowy abomination, doesn't it? But what does that even mean? Is there some hidden weakness we can exploit? As the duplicate lunges towards her once more, Varikka meets it with a mighty blow from her mace. The impact sends shockwaves through the chamber, and for a moment, the shadowy form seems to falter. But then it regains its strength, laughing all the while. Varikka staggers back, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She can feel the exhaustion setting in, the pain from her injuries threatening to overwhelm her. But she won't give up, not now, not ever. "Merrin," she grunts, keeping her eyes fixed on the shadowy creature. "We need to find a way to banish this thing. Keep your wits about you and watch for any openings we can exploit."

The dwarf warrior takes another step forward, her mace raised high. "Come and get me, you miserable wretch!" she roars, bringing her weapon down in a mighty blow.
