Phase: escalating

The stone corridor shifted beneath their feet with a low rumble that seemed to come from deep within the earth itself. Varrika instinctively reached out for support, her hand finding Merrin's shoulder as the ground moved and twisted under them like a living thing. The dwarf woman's injured ankle throbbed with each step, but she gritted her teeth against the pain, refusing to show weakness in front of her companion. Suddenly, the ceiling above them gave way with a deafening crash. Stones and debris rained down around them, forcing both women to dive for cover.
Merrin managed to shield herself against the wall while Varrika fell hard onto her already injured ankle, letting out a pained cry as fresh agony shot up her leg. The halfling woman quickly crawled over to check on her friend, finding the dwarf clutching her ankle and gritting her teeth in pain.
"What in Moradin's name was that?" Merrin exclaimed, looking around at the newly collapsed section of corridor with wide eyes. "Are you okay, Varrika?"
The dwarf warrior waved off her companion's concern, determined not to show weakness despite the intense pain shooting through her leg. "I'm fine," she growled through clenched teeth. "Just... just help me up."
Merrin carefully helped Varrika to her feet, supporting the dwarf's weight as they both tried to navigate through the newly unstable terrain. The corridor ahead was now blocked by a pile of rubble, and the air was thick with dust from the collapse.
"Well," Merrin said after a moment, "I suppose we're not going that way anymore." She glanced around at their limited options. "What do you think? Should we try to find another route, or...?"
Varrika shook her head, still gritting her teeth against the pain in her ankle. "We can't go back," she said firmly. "Not after coming this far. We need to keep moving forward."
Merrin nodded slowly, though her expression remained uncertain. She knew Varikka was right - they couldn't turn back now - but something about this situation felt deeply wrong. The collapse had been too convenient, too perfectly timed to block their original path.
"Alright," she said finally. "But we need to be careful. This whole place feels... unstable somehow."
