Phase: escalating

The air was thick with dust and the oppressive weight of ancient stone as Merrin and Varrika found themselves sprawled on cold flagstones. The fall had knocked the wind from their lungs, leaving them gasping for breath in the gloom. As her vision cleared, Merrin could make out the dim outline of Varikka beside her, the dwarf woman's massive frame a reassuring presence even in the darkness.
"What... what happened?" Varrika's voice was a low growl, thick with pain and confusion. She tried to push herself up, but a sharp cry escaped her lips as her injured ankle protested the movement. "Fuck!" The curse echoed off unseen walls, revealing the true depth of the fall they'd taken.
Merrin scrambled to her feet, her thief's instincts kicking in despite the lingering dizziness from the impact. She moved to Varikka's side, kneeling beside the fallen warrior and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We fell," she said softly, her eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of their lost equipment or immediate threats. "Right through the floor, by the looks of it."
Varikka shifted her weight, wincing as she tested her ankle with gentle pressure. The sprain was clearly worse after the fall, and she knew full well that putting too much weight on it would only make matters worse. She gritted her teeth against the pain, her fingers tightening around Merrin's hand in a gesture of gratitude even as she tried to mask her discomfort.
"We need to find our gear," Varikka grunted, her voice tight with pain. "And figure out where the hell we are." She paused, listening intently. The distant sound of rushing water was unmistakable now, and it sent a chill down her spine. "Unless you'd rather just sit here in the dark and hope something eats us."
Merrin couldn't help but chuckle at Varrika's typically blunt assessment of their situation. She stood, offering the dwarf woman her hand once more. "Come on," she said, her voice tinged with determination despite the lingering fear that gnawed at her insides. "Let's find out what's making that noise before it finds us first."
