Round 640 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Varikka's mace clatters to the stone floor as she crashes down, her ankle giving out beneath her. The Guardian's massive form looms over her, its fist poised to strike. Merrin's dagger flashes up to meet its blow, steel clashing against stone as the two fighters struggle for control. For a moment, it seems Varikka will be crushed, but she finds the strength to push herself up, her eyes locking onto the winding staircase ahead. She stumbles forward, her mace forgotten, and Merrin catches her by the arm, hauling her up the stairs.
I cling desperately to the ledge, my fingers aching from the strain as I struggle to pull myself up. The water churns below me, its cold embrace a constant reminder of how close I came to drowning just moments ago. Varikka's desperate cries echo in my ears, spurring me on even as my muscles scream for rest. I know we can't stay here - the Guardian is closing in, and the chamber above us is sure to collapse at any moment. But with Varikka's injured ankle and the narrowness of the opening, I fear we may be trapped no matter what we do. "Varikka!" I shout, my voice hoarse from exertion. "Can you hear me? We need to find a way out of this - "
My words are cut off as a massive wave crashes over the ledge, sending me tumbling back into the churning water. I gasp and sputter, my lungs burning as I fight to stay afloat. Through the chaos, I can see Varikka's form, her mace clattering to the stone floor as she collapses. The Guardian's roar fills the chamber, its massive form looming over us like a specter of doom. I know we have only moments to act before we're crushed or drowned for good. Gritting my teeth, I launch myself forward, my dagger flashing up to meet the beast's blow as Varikka staggers to her feet. "Varikka!" I shout, my voice filled with urgency and desperation. "The stairs - go now! I'll hold it off!"
I can see the pain etched into every line of Varikka's body as she drags herself towards the winding steps, her movements slow and labored. The Guardian lunges forward, its massive fist poised to strike again, but I'm there in an instant, my dagger flashing up to meet its blow. Steel clashes against stone, and for a moment I think I've failed, that the Guardian's strength is too great. But then Varikka is moving again, her body surging up the stairs with a burst of desperate speed. The Guardian roars in frustration, its form shifting and changing as it tries to follow. And suddenly I see my chance. With a final cry of effort, I launch myself at the beast's leg, my dagger slicing through tendon and bone. The Guardian staggers, its weight bearing down on me with crushing force, and for a moment I fear I've doomed us both. But then Varikka's hand is on my arm, her voice a ragged shout of triumph as she hauls me up the stairs behind her. Together we stagger to our feet, our bodies battered and bruised but alive, and together we race into the darkness, leaving the Guardian and its lair behind us at last.
Merrin's desperate cries spur me into action as I wrench open the door, revealing the winding staircase leading up into darkness. My ankle screams in protest as I stagger forward, but there's no time to stop. The Guardian's roar echoes behind us, its massive form looming ever closer. I can hear the strain in Merrin's voice as she struggles to keep pace, her words filled with concern and urgency. "Varikka! Your ankle - we need to find another way!"
But I shake my head, my teeth bared in a grimace of pain and determination. "No time," I snarl, my hand reaching out to steady myself against the stone wall. "Just keep moving!"
The stairs seem to go on forever, winding up into the darkness. My mace feels like it weighs a thousand pounds in my hand, but I don't dare let go of it. Not with the Guardian so close behind us. I can hear its heavy footfalls on the steps below, its roar of frustration as it tries to force its way through the narrow passage. "Varikka!" Merrin's voice cuts through the pain, urgent and filled with concern. "Here, let me - "
"No time!" I snarl, batting her hand away as she tries to help me up the next step. "Just keep moving!"
We stagger onward, our bodies battered and bruised but alive. And together we race into the darkness, leaving the Guardian and its lair behind us at last.
