Round 639 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varikka tumbles towards the stairs, her mace clattering from her grasp, she feels a searing pain in her ankle. She knows she can't put weight on it, but she has no choice - the Guardian is closing in, its massive form looming over her like a specter of doom. Merrin's shout of alarm echoes through the chamber, and Varikka sees her friend lunge forward, dagger flashing in the dim light. But Varikka can't move, her body frozen in agony as the Guardian raises a crushing fist to strike.
A scream tears from my throat as I see Varikka crumple beneath the Guardian's crushing blow. Without thinking, I launch myself at the beast, my dagger flashing in the dim light. "Varikka!" I shout, desperation lending strength to my limbs. "Get up! We have to move!"
I land a solid blow on the Guardian's flank, my dagger sinking deep into its flesh. The creature roars in pain and fury, whirling to face me with blistering speed. But I'm already moving, darting away from its sweeping arm before diving back in for another strike. "Varikka!" I call again, my eyes fixed on the Fighter's prone form. "I'll hold it off! Get to the stairs!"
I can see the pain etched into every line of Varikka's body as she drags herself towards the winding steps, her movements slow and labored. The Guardian lunges forward, its massive fist poised to strike again, but I'm there in an instant, my dagger flashing up to meet its blow. Steel clashes against stone, and for a moment I think I've failed, that the Guardian's strength is too great. But then Varikka is moving again, her body surging up the stairs with a burst of desperate speed. The Guardian roars in frustration, its form shifting and changing as it tries to follow. And suddenly I see my chance. With a final cry of effort, I launch myself at the beast's leg, my dagger slicing through tendon and bone. The Guardian staggers, its weight bearing down on me with crushing force, and for a moment I fear I've doomed us both. But then Varikka's hand is on my arm, her voice a ragged shout of triumph as she hauls me up the stairs behind her. Together we stagger to our feet, our bodies battered and bruised but alive, and together we race into the darkness, leaving the Guardian and its lair behind us at last.
My ankle screams in agony as I drag myself up the winding stairs, Merrin's desperate cry spurring me onward. The Guardian's roar echoes behind us, and I know we don't have much time. "Keep going!" I shout over my shoulder, my breath coming in ragged gasps. "Don't stop for anything!"
The stairs seem to go on forever, winding upward into darkness. My mace feels like it weighs a thousand pounds in my hand, and every step is pure misery. But I don't dare stop, not with the Guardian so close behind us. I can hear the beast's heavy footfalls on the stairs, its roar of frustration as it tries to force its way through the narrow passage. "Varikka!" Merrin's voice cuts through the pain, urgent and filled with concern. "Here, let me - "
"No time!" I snarl, batting her hand away as she tries to help me up the next step. "Just keep moving!"
We stagger onward, our bodies battered and bruised but alive, and together we race into the darkness, leaving the Guardian and its lair behind us at last.
