The air is thick with the smell of smoke and char as the collapsed shelves give way to a new chamber. Varika stumbles forward, her mace at the ready, her sprained ankle throbbing in pain. The Guardian lies motionless on the ground, its massive frame defeated but not without cost. A section of the ceiling has collapsed, sending rubble raining down on the chamber. Varika's eyes scan the room, taking in the new landscape. She sees a door to her left, partially hidden by the rubble. It looks like it hasn't been opened in years, but it might be their only chance of escape. Varika's gaze flicks to Merrin, who is already moving towards the door, her eyes fixed on the lock. Varika's face sets in a determined expression. She knows she can't keep up with Merrin for much longer. Her ankle is killing her, and the noxious gas is starting to take its toll. She needs to find a way out of here, and fast. But as she turns to make her way towards the door, she realizes that Varika's sprained ankle has given way, sending her crashing to the ground with a cry of pain.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I hear Varikka's cry of pain behind me and whirl around to see her crumpled on the ground, her mace lying just out of reach. My heart clenches in my chest, but I don't have time to rush to her aid right now. The Guardian is stirring, its massive frame beginning to rise from the rubble. And above us, the ceiling creaks and groans, threatening to collapse at any moment. "No time!" I shout, my eyes darting between Varikka's prone form and the door ahead of us. "Varikka, grab your mace and get to that door! I'll hold them off!"

I don't wait for her to respond, instead sprinting forward with a burst of speed, my dagger gripped tight in my hand. The Guardian roars as I approach, its arm lashing out to strike at me. But I'm too quick, my agile form ducking and weaving beneath the blow before coming up behind the creature's leg. "Hey, ugly!" I shout, driving my dagger into the Guardian's calf with all my strength. "Got a problem with that?"

The beast roars in pain and fury, its massive frame whirling around to face me. I can see the anger burning in its eyes, the way its muscles tense as it prepares to strike again. But I don't let it intimidate me. Instead, I launch myself at it once more, my dagger slashing and stabbing at any vulnerable spot I can reach. "Come on then, you overgrown rock troll!" I taunt, my voice filled with bravado even as my heart pounds in my chest. "Show me what you've got!"

And so the battle is joined once more, the clash of steel against stone echoing through the chamber as Merrin fights for her life and Varikka's escape.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Merrin's cry of defiance spurs me into action. I snatch up my mace, gritting my teeth against the pain in my ankle as I stagger to my feet. Merrin is a whirlwind of motion before me, her dagger flashing as she harries the Guardian, buying me precious seconds. Limping heavily, I make my way towards the door, my eyes fixed on the lock. It's old and rusted, but as I draw near, I can see that it's not completely locked - just jammed from years of disuse. I raise my mace, preparing to smash the lock free, when a sudden crash from above makes me stagger back in fear. The ceiling is collapsing, great slabs of stone raining down around us. Merrin's cry of warning cuts through the chaos, and I see her dive for cover just as a boulder crashes down where she stood mere moments before. I know we don't have much time left. With a grunt of effort, I swing my mace at the lock with all my strength. The metal groans, then gives way with a tortured screech. I wrench the door open, revealing a narrow, winding staircase leading up into darkness. "Merrin!" I call out, my voice barely audible over the din of falling stone. "This way!"

I take a step forward, but my ankle gives way beneath me, sending me crashing to the ground with a cry of pain. The Guardian looms behind me, its shadow falling across my prone form. I can hear Merrin's shout of alarm, but there's no time. With a groan, I drag myself towards the stairs, praying that I'll make it out alive.
