Round 636 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The Guardian takes another step forward, its massive frame looming over the pair. Varikka continues to taunt it, her voice ringing out in the cavernous space. "You think you're so tough?" I call out, my tone mocking and taunting. "We've faced worse than you in our travels. You're just another obstacle to overcome."
The Guardian's eyes narrow, its massive frame tensing at my words. It raises a hand, causing the water in front of us to pause. The air is thick with tension, and the sound of rushing water and distant collapse echoes through the chamber.
Suddenly, the water in front of us surges forward, threatening to sweep us away. The Guardian's attention flicks to our position, its gaze piercing through the darkness. Merrin seizes the opportunity, darting out from behind the Guardian with a swift movement. She lands beside me, her eyes locked on the opening to the alcove ahead. "Varikka, now!" she whispers urgently. The Guardian's massive frame shifts slightly, its eyes still fixed on us as it takes another step forward. The water continues to rise, lapping at our thighs and threatening to pull us under.
I dart out from behind the Guardian at the perfect moment, seizing the opportunity created by the sudden surge of water. My feet fly across the slick stones, landing beside Varikka in a crouch. "Varikka, now!" I hiss urgently, my eyes locked on the opening to the alcove ahead. The Guardian's attention flicks back to us, its gaze piercing through the darkness. I can see the anger burning in its eyes, the way its massive frame shifts slightly as it takes another step forward. The water continues to rise, lapping at our thighs and threatening to pull us under. But we don't have time to worry about that now. I reach out a hand, grabbing Varikka's arm and pulling her with me as I sprint towards the opening. "Move!" I shout, my voice echoing off the chamber walls. The Guardian roars behind us, its footsteps heavy on the stones as it gives chase. I can feel the heat of its breath on my back, the way the air trembles with its fury. But I don't look back. We reach the opening just as the water surges forward again, threatening to sweep us away. I dive through first, rolling to the side and coming up in a crouch, my hand on the hilt of my dagger. Varikka follows a second later, her mace raised and ready for battle. The alcove is small, little more than a narrow tunnel leading deeper into the tower. But it's our only chance of escape. I can hear the Guardian's roar echoing behind us, the sound of its massive frame crashing through the chamber in pursuit. "Go!" I shout, shoving Varikka forward. "I'll hold them off!"
Varikka hesitates for a moment, her eyes searching mine as if to ask if this is really necessary. But there's no time to argue. The Guardian is almost upon us, its footsteps heavy on the stones. "Move!" I repeat, my voice sharp and urgent. "I'll catch up!"
With a final nod, Varikka turns and sprints down the tunnel, her mace held at the ready. I watch her go for a moment, my heart clenching with fear and worry. Then I turn to face the Guardian, my dagger raised and my feet set in a fighting stance. The massive creature looms over me, its eyes burning with fury as it raises a hand, summoning the water behind it into a massive wave. I brace myself, ready for the impact, knowing that this is likely to be the most dangerous fight of my life. But I also know that Varikka is counting on me to hold the line. And so I stand my ground, my dagger ready and my resolve strong. Let the battle begin.
I hear Merrin's shout behind me, feel the urgency in her voice as she pushes me forward into the narrow tunnel. My heart clenches with fear and worry, but I know she's right. We can't both face the Guardian at once. One of us has to escape, has to warn the others of the danger lurking in these halls.
So I run, my mace held at the ready as I sprint down the winding passage. The stones are slick beneath my feet, the walls closing in around me as I navigate the twists and turns. But I don't slow my pace, knowing that Merrin is fighting for our lives back there, buying us precious seconds with every breath.
I can hear the roar of the Guardian behind me, the sound of its massive frame crashing through the chamber in pursuit. But I don't look back. I can't afford to lose my footing, can't risk tumbling down into the darkness. Not when Merrin is counting on me to make it out alive.
I round another corner, my lungs burning and my legs aching from the exertion. The tunnel seems to go on forever, winding deeper and deeper into the heart of the tower. But I don't let myself think about that now. All that matters is putting as much distance between myself and the Guardian as possible, giving Merrin the best chance of escape.
And so I run, my feet pounding against the stones and my mace held at the ready. The shadows dance around me, the echoes of my breath bouncing off the walls in a dizzying array of sound. But I press on, my resolve unwavering as I fight my way through the darkness.
Let Merrin hold the line. Let her buy us the time we need to make it out alive. Because if we can just reach the others, if we can warn them of the danger that lurks within these halls, then perhaps we can still turn the tide of this battle. And so I run, my heart pounding in my chest and my mind focused on one goal: survival.
