The Guardian's massive frame shifts slightly, its eyes narrowing as it regards Merrin and Varikka with growing hostility. "You think you can outwit me?" it growls, a low rumble that shakes the chamber floor. "I have watched countless adventurers like you come and go. You will join their ranks."

As the Guardian speaks, the water in front of them begins to churn and froth, as if it too is eager to see them meet their end. Merrin's grip on Varikka's arm tightens, her mind racing for a way out of this predicament. The air grows thick with tension, and the sound of rushing water and distant collapse echoes through the chamber. Varikka takes a step forward, her mace at the ready. "We'll see about that," she says, her voice steady despite the danger that looms before them.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's heart races as she takes in the Guardian's ominous words, the churning water, and Varikka's readiness to fight. She knows they're in a precarious position, trapped on all sides with no clear escape route. But Merrin is no stranger to dire situations - it's how she's survived this long. She takes a deep breath, her mind working overtime to find a solution. The Guardian's arrogance is a double-edged sword; it may be overconfident, but that could be their saving grace. Merrin glances around the chamber again, her eyes landing on a small alcove partially obscured by the rising water. "Varikka, trust me," she whispers urgently. "We need to create a distraction, something to draw its attention away from us." She points to the alcove. "I think there might be an opening over there, but we'll never make it if the Guardian is focused on us."

Varikka follows her gaze, her brow furrowing in thought. "What kind of distraction?" she asks, her voice low. Merrin chews her lip, considering their options. "I don't know yet," she admits. "But I'm working on it." She looks back at the Guardian, studying its massive form, the way its eyes track their every movement. An idea begins to take shape in her mind, risky but potentially effective. She turns back to Varikka, a determined set to her jaw. "Here's what we're going to do," she says, her voice quiet but forceful. "I'm going to try to get behind the Guardian, see if I can find a weak point or some way to disable it." She pauses, gauging Varikka's reaction. "While I do that, you need to keep its attention on you. Taunt it, insult it, whatever it takes to make it focus on you instead of me."

Varikka's eyes narrow, but she nods slowly. "Alright," she says. "I can do that." She grips her mace tighter, a grim smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "But if this goes wrong..."

"It won't," Merrin interrupts, more confident than she feels. "We've got this, Varikka. Together, we can outwit anything."

With that, she takes a step back, her eyes scanning the chamber for a path to the alcove. The water laps at her boots, cold and threatening, but Merrin ignores it, her attention focused solely on the battle ahead. She may not know what they'll face once they reach the opening, but one thing is certain: she and Varikka will face it side by side, no matter what it takes. "Ready?" she asks, glancing at Varikka one last time. The fighter nods, her expression set and determined. "Ready," she confirms. And with that, Merrin begins to move, her feet light on the slippery stones as she circles around the Guardian, searching for a way to catch it off guard. The battle ahead is far from over, but for now, they have a plan, and that's enough to give Merrin hope. What happens next depends on how well they execute their strategy, how the Guardian responds, and what surprises the tower has in store. But one thing is certain: Merrin and Varikka will face whatever comes together, just as they always have.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I nod at Merrin's plan, my grip tightening on my mace. It goes against every instinct I have to stand back while she faces the danger, but I trust her judgement. She's kept us alive this long, after all. So I take a deep breath and step forward, my eyes fixed on the looming figure of the Guardian.

"You think you're so tough?" I call out, my voice echoing off the chamber walls. "We've faced worse than you in our travels. You're just another obstacle to overcome."

The Guardian's eyes narrow, its massive frame tensing as it regards me with growing anger. Good. If I can keep its attention on me, Merrin will have a better chance of getting behind it undetected.

I take another step forward, the water lapping at my boots but barely registering. My ankle throbs with pain, but I push it down, focusing on the battle ahead. The Guardian shifts its weight, as if preparing to strike, and I ready myself, my muscles coiled and my mace raised.

"Come on then," I taunt, my voice ringing out in the cavernous space. "Show us what you've got. If you can even touch me, that is."

I can feel Merrin's presence behind me, her movements slight as she circles around to the Guardian's blind spot. But I don't look back. My attention is solely on the looming figure before me, on the battle that could end our lives if we don't play this just right.

And so we wait, the Guardian and I, poised on the brink of a fight that will decide our fate. The air is thick with tension, the only sound the rush of the rising water and the distant rumble of the tower's collapse. But I am not afraid. Whatever happens next, Merrin and I will face it side by side, our weapons raised and our spirits unbroken.

Let the battle begin.
