As we stumble forward, the air thick with smoke and ash, I realize that our escape route has become increasingly precarious. The tunnel is now a mere 20 feet above the rising waterline, and the walls are beginning to crumble under the pressure. I can hear the distant roar of the water, growing louder by the second. "Merrin, we need to find a way up, or we'll be swept away!" Varikka cries out, her voice barely audible over the din. I scan our surroundings, desperate for an escape route. The narrow tunnel stretches out before us, but I spot a faint glimmer of light up ahead - a small opening that might just provide a way out. But as I take a step forward, the ground gives another violent lurch, and I stumble. The opening above us begins to collapse, sending rubble tumbling down towards us. We have only seconds to act before it's too late.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I grab Varikka's arm, pulling her away from the crumbling wall just as a large chunk of stone crashes down where we were standing moments before. "This way!" I shout, pointing towards the narrow opening ahead. "It's our only chance!"

Together, we stagger forward, our movements uncoordinated and clumsy. The air is thick with smoke and the acrid scent of burning rubble, making it hard to breathe. But even as my lungs burn and my legs ache from exertion, I know that we can't stop. Not until we're safe. As we approach the opening, I realize just how small it is - barely wide enough for us to squeeze through side-by-side. "Varikka, you go first," I say, helping her to crouch down and begin the awkward process of wiggling her way through the narrow gap. "I'll be right behind you."

But as Varikka begins to push herself through, a sudden lurch of the ground sends her tumbling back towards me. I reach out, grabbing her by the waist and hauling her back just as another chunk of stone comes crashing down where she was moments before. "Thank you," she gasps, her face pale with fear and exertion. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Merrin."

I offer her a tight smile, but inside, my heart is racing. We're running out of time - the water is rising fast, and the tower is collapsing around us. "Just keep moving," I tell her, my voice strained. "We'll make it through this together."

And with that, I turn back to the opening, steeling myself for the difficult task ahead. The gap is narrow, and the walls are crumbling, but it's our only chance at survival. And so, with a deep breath and a silent prayer, I begin to push myself through, wiggling and squirming my way into the unknown depths of the tower above.

I feel a wave of relief wash over me as Merrin pulls me back from the brink of danger, but there's no time to dwell on it. The tower is collapsing around us, and we have to keep moving if we want to survive.

As Merrin begins to squeeze through the narrow opening ahead, I crouch down, ready to follow in her footsteps. But as I begin to push myself through, a sudden lurch of the ground sends me tumbling back towards her. I reach out, grabbing onto her waist and hauling her back just as another chunk of stone comes crashing down where she was moments before.

"Thank you," I gasp, my face pale with fear and exertion. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Merrin."

But even as the words leave my mouth, I know that we're far from safe. The water is rising fast, and the tower is collapsing around us. We need to keep moving if we want to stand any chance of survival.

With a deep breath and a silent prayer, I turn back to the opening, steeling myself for the difficult task ahead. The gap is narrow, and the walls are crumbling, but it's our only chance at escape.

As I begin to push myself through, I feel a sudden wave of pain wash over me as my sprained ankle protests the movement. But I grit my teeth and keep going, knowing that we can't afford to stop now.

Slowly, agonizingly, I wiggle and squirm my way through the narrow gap, my muscles burning with effort. The stone is rough against my skin, and I have to fight the urge to cry out as it scrapes against my flesh.

But finally, after what feels like an eternity, I emerge on the other side, gasping for air. Merrin is there waiting for me, her face etched with concern.

"Varikka," she says, reaching out to help me to my feet. "Are you alright?"

I nod, wincing as I put weight on my injured ankle. "I'll live," I tell her, forcing a grin. "But we need to keep moving. That water is getting closer by the second."

Together, we stagger forward, our movements uncoordinated and clumsy. The air is thick with smoke and ash, making it hard to breathe. But even as my lungs burn and my legs ache from exertion, I know that we can't stop. Not until we're safe.

And so, with Merrin's help, I limp forward, praying that we'll find a way out of this cursed tower before it's too late.
