Round 626 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As I dig my feet into the wall, holding fast against the current, a loud crack echoes through the shaft. The ground shudders beneath us, and the water surges forward, threatening to sweep Varikka away. I feel the rope in my hands begin to fray, the fibers snapping as the force of the water tugs on it. "Merrin, no!" Varikka cries out, her voice barely audible over the roar of the flood. The Guardian's laughter grows louder, more triumphant, as if it's enjoying our desperation. Suddenly, a chunk of rubble falls from above, slamming into the wall mere feet away from Varikka's head, sending shards of stone flying everywhere. I'm forced to release my grip on the rope to avoid being pulled under myself, leaving Varikka's fate hanging in the balance.
I release my grip on the rope just before it snaps, barely avoiding being pulled under myself. As the water surges forward, threatening to sweep Varikka away, I feel a rush of panic rise in my throat. "Varikka!" I cry out, my voice barely audible over the roar of the flood. But even as the words leave my mouth, I know it's too late. The Guardian's laughter echoes through the shaft, its mocking tone sending chills down my spine. With a grimace of pain, I force myself to my feet, my muscles burning from the effort of keeping the rope taut. My heart races as I look around, searching for any means of escape. But all I see is the rising water and the crumbling walls, closing in on us like a tomb. As I take a step back, my foot catches on a loose stone, sending me stumbling backwards. I reach out, my hand grasping for something, anything to steady myself. But there's nothing there. I feel my balance teetering on the edge of a precipice, and for a moment, I think I'm going to fall. But then, just as quickly as it appeared, the danger passes. I steady myself, my breath coming in ragged gasps as I look around, trying to make sense of what just happened. The water has receded, leaving behind a scene of chaos and destruction. Rubble litters the floor, and the air is thick with the scent of smoke and ash. I take a tentative step forward, my boots crunching on the debris. And then, I hear it. A faint moan, barely audible over the sound of the water still trickling down the walls. "Varikka?" I call out, my voice hoarse with fear. "Are you alright?"
There's no answer, but I can't bring myself to hope for the best. Not after everything we've been through. As I take another step forward, I feel a sudden surge of anger rising within me. This creature, this Guardian, has taken so much from us already. Our friends, our allies, our very sanity. And now, it's threatened to take Varikka too. I grit my teeth, my hands balling into tight knots at my sides. No more. I won't let it win. Not like this, not after everything we've been through. With a burst of adrenaline, I surge forward, my eyes scanning the rubble for any sign of movement. And then, I see her. Varikka, lying motionless on the ground, her body half-buried under a pile of debris. "Varikka!" I cry out, rushing to her side. "Hold on, I'm coming!"
I drop to my knees beside her, my hands frantically brushing away the rubble. It takes every ounce of my strength, but I manage to clear enough space to reach her. And as I pull her into my arms, I feel a wave of relief wash over me. She's alive, but barely. Her skin is pale, her breathing shallow and labored. "Merrin," she whispers, her voice barely audible. "What happened?"
I shake my head, unable to find the words. "I don't know," I say, my own voice trembling with emotion. "But we're going to get out of here. Somehow."
And as I hold her close, I feel a surge of determination rising within me. We've come too far, fought too hard, to give up now. Whatever this Guardian has in store for us next, we'll face it together. And we'll emerge victorious, or we'll die trying. But that's a story for another day.
I feel Merrin's arms around me, pulling me close as I struggle to catch my breath.
Merrin, what...what happened? The last thing I remember is the water surging... My words trail off as a wave of pain washes over me, my injuries making it hard to focus.
Did we...did we make it out? I try to push myself up, wincing as my sprained ankle protests the movement. Around us, the rubble and debris paint a scene of chaos and destruction. I can't see any sign of the Guardian, but that doesn't mean it's gone. It's still out there somewhere, watching and waiting for its chance to strike again.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever comes next. Whatever this creature has in store for us, we'll face it together. And we'll emerge victorious, or we'll die trying.
