As I lower the rope, I feel a surge of hope rise within me. Varikka's eyes lock onto mine, her expression a mix of determination and desperation. She reaches out, her hand grasping for the rope with a Herculean effort. I pull it taut, feeling the strain on my arm as she begins to climb. But just as we're making progress, the ground gives a sickening lurch beneath us. The water surges forward, threatening to sweep Varikka away. I dig my feet into the wall, holding fast against the current. "Merrin, hold on!" I shout, my voice barely audible over the roar of the water. The Guardian's laughter echoes through the shaft, its mocking tone dripping with glee. "Fools," it says. "You'll never escape."

A chunk of rubble falls from above, slamming into the wall mere feet away from Varikka's head. I grit my teeth, fighting to keep the rope steady as the water rises higher and higher. The Guardian's next move is about to decide our fate.

I hear Merrin's voice above me, urging me to hold on and climb, but I can barely focus on her words over the roar of the water.

My heart leaps into my throat as the ground shifts beneath us. I dig my heels into the crumbling stone, fighting for purchase as the water surges around Varikka's legs. "Hold on!" I shout, my voice barely audible over the roar of the rising flood. My muscles burn with the effort of keeping the rope taut, but I can't let go. If I do, Varikka will be swept away, just like Halie and Seraphine were. The Guardian's laughter echoes through the shaft, its mocking tone sending chills down my spine. "Fools," it taunts. "You'll never escape." A chunk of rubble slams into the wall mere inches from Varikka's head, and I feel a surge of anger rise within me. This creature is playing with us, toying with our lives like we're nothing more than pawns in some sick game. But I won't let it win. Not while there's still breath in my lungs and strength in my limbs. I grit my teeth, fighting against the current as Varikka struggles to climb. "You can do this," I mutter under my breath, my words more of a prayer than a command. "Just keep climbing. I've got you."

And as the water rises higher and higher, threatening to sweep us both away, I know that there's only one thing left to do. I have to keep fighting, keep clawing our way towards safety no matter the cost. Because if we don't, the darkness will claim us both.
