The tunnel air grew thick with more than just noxious gas—now it was the weight of impending doom that settled over them. Merrin’s torch flickered wildly, casting grotesque shadows on the ancient walls as they descended deeper into the stone heart of the crumbling tower. The halfling woman stumbled, her foot slipping on loose stone, and only Varrika’s quick grip kept her from falling completely.

"We need to move faster," Merrin hissed, clutching Varikka’s good arm with both hands now. "The water's rising." She could feel it lapping at their boots already, insistent fingers of impending doom that seemed determined to pull them under. The dwarf woman leaned on her gratefully, though her expression remained grim.

"I know," Varrika growled back, each word punctuated by a labored breath. "But I can barely walk on this ankle, let alone run." Her injured foot dragged heavily with every step, shooting fresh waves of agony up her leg. The tunnel ahead descended steeply, the air growing thicker and more oppressive as they proceeded. Merrin’s torchlight revealed more ancient carvings on the walls—warning symbols, perhaps, or prayers to forgotten gods.

Varikka squinted at them, her vision blurring slightly from the exertion and the noxious gas still lingering in her system. The water lapped higher now, soaking into their boots and making the stone slick beneath their feet. She could feel panic rising in her chest but forced it down with sheer will. They couldn’t afford to lose control here.

"Wait," Merrin said suddenly, holding up a hand. "Do you hear that?" Varrika strained her ears, trying to filter out the sound of rushing water and her own labored breathing. Faintly, she caught it—a rumbling, grinding sound coming from somewhere above them.

"Shit," she muttered under her breath. "That doesn’t sound good." The ground beneath their feet seemed to tremble slightly, and a fine dust began to rain down from the ceiling. Merrin’s grip on Varikka’s arm tightened painfully as they both froze in place.

"What do we do?" the halfling woman whispered, her dark eyes wide with fear in the torchlight. Varrika met her gaze, weighing their options quickly. They couldn’t stay here—the rising water would eventually submerge them completely. But moving through unstable tunnels with a sprained ankle seemed like a recipe for disaster.

"We keep going," Varikka said finally, her voice tight with pain and determination. "But we need to find higher ground." She shifted her weight, trying to take another step forward, but a fresh wave of agony shot up her leg. Merrin caught her as she stumbled, supporting more of the dwarf woman’s weight now.

"Lean on me," the halfling said firmly. "We’ll get through this together." Varrika nodded gratefully, allowing Merrin to take more of her weight. The two women moved forward slowly, carefully picking their way over the treacherous footing as the water continued to rise around them.

The tunnel opened up into a larger chamber ahead, and Merrin’s torchlight revealed a scene that made both their hearts sink. The floor was already partially submerged, with water rushing in from multiple points along the walls. In the center of the room, barely above the rising surface, stood a precarious-looking stone platform.

"That has to be our way out," Varrika said, her voice grim. "But how the hell do we get up there without drowning first?" The water was already waist-deep in places, and the sound of rushing liquid filled the air like a thousand angry voices. Merrin bit her lip, scanning the room for any other options.

"There might be a way," she said slowly, pointing to what looked like a narrow opening in the wall near the platform. "But we’ll have to move fast—and I’m not sure how much Varikka’s ankle can take." The dwarf woman scowled but didn’t argue. She knew her limitations all too well.

"Then let’s go," she said, gritting her teeth against the pain. "Before this whole damn place comes down on us." Merrin nodded, and together they began to wade through the rising water toward the opening. The current was stronger than they’d expected, pulling at their legs and making each step a struggle.

Halfway across the chamber, a sudden roar from above made them freeze in terror. A massive section of the ceiling had given way, sending a cascade of stone and debris crashing down into the water around them. Merrin screamed as a chunk of rock the size of her fist slammed into Varrika’s shoulder, sending the dwarf woman under the surface.

"No!" The halfling dove forward, barely keeping her head above water as she frantically searched for Varrika in the churning darkness. Her hands found the dwarf’s arm, and she pulled with all her strength, dragging them both toward the relative safety of the stone platform.

They surfaced together, gasping for air, clinging to each other like drowning sailors. The water was already up to their chests now, and the sound of rushing liquid filled their ears as more debris rained down around them. Varrika’s shoulder throbbed with fresh pain, but she could feel Merrin’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, keeping her afloat.

"We need to get out of this room," the dwarf woman gasped, struggling to stay above water despite the agony in her ankle and shoulder. "Now." Merrin nodded, her face set with determination even as terror shone in her dark eyes. Together, they began to kick toward the opening in the wall, desperate to reach higher ground before the entire chamber was submerged.

The water pulled at them relentlessly, trying to drag them back into its depths. Chunks of stone continued to fall around them, each impact sending up sprays of water that threatened to swamp them completely. But they kept moving, driven by sheer will and the desperate need to survive.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of struggle against the current, their hands found the edge of the opening. Merrin pulled herself up first, then reached down to help Varrika climb out onto the narrow ledge above. They collapsed together on solid stone for a moment, gasping for air and trembling with adrenaline.

"That was too close," Varrika panted, her entire body screaming with pain but relief flooding through her nonetheless. Merrin nodded, still breathing hard as she looked back at the rapidly flooding chamber below them.

"We need to find a way out of here fast," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "Before we run out of air pockets or the whole place collapses completely." Varrika pushed herself up onto her elbows, wincing at the fresh agony in her shoulder and ankle. The tunnel ahead was dark and narrow, but it was their only option now.

"Then let’s move," she said grimly, struggling to her feet with Merrin’s help. "And hope we don’t run into anything worse than what we’re already dealing with."
