Round 585 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The ground beneath us gives another lurch, and I stumble, catching myself against the wall just in time. The ancient stones shudder and groan, the sound like a warning of things to come. Suddenly, the torches on the walls flicker and die, plunging the chamber into darkness. I hear the sound of rocks falling behind us, and I know we're running out of time. "Varikka, can you see anything?" I call out, my voice low and urgent. Varikka's response is hesitant, her injured ankle screaming in pain with each movement. "I...I think I see a door up ahead," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. I nod, my eyes straining to see through the darkness. "We need to get to that door, now. The Guardian will be waiting for us on the other side."
As we move forward, the sound of rocks and debris grows louder, threatening to trap us in the collapsing chamber. We have to make a decision fast - do we risk pushing forward, or try to find another way out?
As we move toward the door, Varikka's breathing grows more labored, her injured ankle clearly causing her great pain. But she presses on, determined to reach safety. "Merrin," she gasps, her voice strained. "I...I don't know if I can make it much further."
I feel a surge of panic rise up within me at her words. We're so close to the door, but if Varikka can't keep going, we may be trapped here in this collapsing chamber. "Varikka, we have to keep moving," I say, my voice low and urgent. "We're almost there. Just a little further."
As we approach the door, I can see that it's old and weathered, with intricate carvings etched into its surface. But as I reach out to push it open, I hesitate. The Guardian's words echo in my mind, warning us not to proceed. "Varikka," I whisper, my hand on the door handle. "Are you sure about this? The Guardian said we wouldn't leave this place. What if...what if this is a trap?"
Varikka nods, her eyes fixed on the door before us. "We don't have a choice," she says, her voice trembling slightly. "This is our only way out. We have to take the risk."
I take a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest. I know Varikka is right, but the thought of what might lie beyond that door fills me with a sense of dread. But we have no choice. We have to keep moving forward, even if it means facing whatever horrors this place has in store for us. So I push open the door, and we step through into the unknown.
I wince as I struggle to my feet, my injured ankle screaming in pain. Merrin helps me up, her eyes scanning the shadows of the chamber ahead with a look of grim determination.
"We need to keep moving," she says, her voice low and urgent. "The Guardian could be anywhere, and we don't know how much time we have before the whole place comes down on top of us."
I nod, my jaw set with determination. I know she's right. We can't afford to stop here for long, not with the tower collapsing around us. But as I take a tentative step forward, I can feel the weight of the ancient relic pressing down on me, its presence both comforting and terrifying at the same time.
"Merrin, be careful," I mutter, my voice low and urgent. "I don't like this place. It feels...wrong."
But Merrin is already moving ahead, her eyes fixed on some unseen target in the darkness ahead. I can see the tension in her shoulders, the way she holds herself as if ready to spring into action at any moment. And as we make our way deeper into the chamber, I can feel a sense of unease settling over me like a heavy weight.
Suddenly, the ground beneath us gives another lurch, and I hear a sickening crack echo through the passageway. The ancient stones shudder and groan, the sound like a warning of things to come. And as I look up at the ceiling above us, I can see cracks spidering across the surface, like the veins of some long-dormant beast awakening from slumber.
"We need to hurry," I say, my voice trembling slightly. "This place is coming down around us."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever lies ahead. Whatever horrors this tower has in store for us, we'll face them together. And with the ancient relic in Merrin's hands and my mace at my side, I'm ready for anything this place has to throw at us.
As we venture further into the unknown depths of the tower, I can't shake the feeling that something is watching us from the shadows, waiting to ambush us at any moment. The air is thick with a sense of impending doom, and I can feel my heart pounding in my chest.
But as we make our way deeper into the chamber, Merrin suddenly stops in her tracks, her eyes fixed on something in the darkness ahead. "Varrika," she whispers, her voice trembling. "I think there's something up ahead. Something...wrong."
I squint into the shadows, trying to see what Merrin is looking at. And then I see it - a dark, shadowy figure moving through the passageway ahead of us, its form shifting and changing as we watch.
"What in the name of..." I mutter, my hand tightening on the grip of my mace. "Merrin, what is that thing?"
But Merrin doesn't answer, her eyes still fixed on the shadowy figure. And as we stand there in the darkness, the ground beneath us gives another sickening lurch, and I know we have to make a decision. Do we confront whatever lies ahead, or do we turn back and try to find another way out of this cursed place?
