Round 554 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the ground continues to shake beneath their feet, Merrin swiftly grabs Varikka's arm and pulls her towards a narrow side passage that Varikka had noticed earlier. The torchlight flickers as they squeeze into the cramped space, revealing a set of rickety stairs leading up to a small platform. The air is thick with dust, and cobwebs cling to the walls as they ascend. The stairs creak ominously, threatening to collapse beneath their weight. At the top, the platform offers a precarious view of the main chamber below - the ceiling is cracked, and rocks are tumbling down the passageway. Varikka's sprained ankle throbs with each step, but she manages to keep her balance as Merrin helps her onto the platform. The Guardian's approach echoes through the tower, growing louder by the second.
I pull Varikka up the rickety stairs, my heart pounding in my chest as the ground continues to shake beneath our feet. The torchlight flickers wildly, casting eerie shadows on the walls as we squeeze into the narrow side passage.
"Come on, Varikka," I pant, my voice strained with effort. "We need to find a safe place to ride this out."
I glance over my shoulder, my eyes scanning the darkness for any signs of pursuit. But all I see is dust and cobwebs, clinging to the ancient stones like ghostly tendrils.
The stairs creak ominously as we ascend, each step sending a jolt of pain through my already aching muscles. Varikka winces beside me, her face contorted with pain as she struggles to keep her balance on her injured ankle.
At last, we reach the top of the stairs, emerging onto a small platform that overlooks the main chamber below. The ceiling is cracked, and rocks are tumbling down the passageway, threatening to crush anyone caught beneath them.
"Merrin, look!" Varikka gasps, pointing towards the far end of the chamber. "There's another staircase, on the other side!"
I squint through the darkness, my eyes straining to make out the distant shape in the flickering torchlight. It's a long way down, and the path is treacherous at best - but it may be our only chance of escape.
"I see it," I mutter, my teeth gritted as I consider our options. "But we'll have to make it down there alive. And fast."
Just then, a low rumble echoes through the tower, growing louder by the second. I feel a chill run down my spine as I recognize the sound - it's the Guardian, closing in on our position.
"Varikka, we need to move now," I say urgently, my hand tightening on her arm. "That thing is coming for us, and if we don't get out of here soon, we'll be trapped."
I glance around the platform, my eyes searching for any other means of escape. But there's nothing - just the long, treacherous climb down to the main chamber below, and the distant promise of another staircase on the far side.
"Can you make it?" I ask, my voice soft with concern. "I know your ankle is bad, but we can't afford to stop now. Not with that thing so close."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the long descent ahead. The ground continues to shake beneath our feet, and the ancient stones groan and shift around us. But for now, we are alive, and as long as we have each other, there is still hope.
"Alright," I say firmly, my hand on the hilt of my dagger. "Let's go. Stay close to me, and watch your step. We'll make it out of this place, even if we have to fight our way through."
Together, we turn towards the stairs, our torches held high and our weapons at the ready. The Guardian's approach echoes through the tower, growing louder by the second - but for now, we are still free, and as long as we keep moving forward, there is a chance that we might just survive this nightmare after all.
I grit my teeth as I survey the crumbling platform and the treacherous climb down to the main chamber below. The Guardian's approach echoes through the tower, growing louder by the second - we're running out of time.
"Alright, Merrin," I mutter, my hand tightening on my mace. "Let's do this. We'll make our way to that far staircase, and hope that it leads us somewhere safe."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the long descent ahead. My ankle throbs with each step, but I know that we can't afford to stop now. Not with that thing so close on our heels.
"Just stay close to me," I say softly, my eyes scanning the darkness below. "And watch your step. We'll get through this together."
With a final glance over my shoulder, I turn towards the stairs, my torch held high and my weapon at the ready. The ancient stones groan and shift around us, threatening to collapse at any moment - but for now, we are still alive, and as long as we keep moving forward, there is a chance that we might just make it out of this nightmare after all.
I take a deep breath, and begin the long, treacherous climb down into the depths of the tower. The Guardian's approach echoes through the darkness, growing louder by the second - but for now, we are still free, and as long as we have each other, there is still hope.
